Know the “crew” is on the Whistle Stop Tour”, but we are able to enjoy some great train views, business as usual. Took grandsons to the rail yard today to watch the trains being constructed, at early am the mosquitoes were on hand, but coffee and donuts helped. The screeching sound of the cars rolling down the rails most enjoyable, the little grandson needed ear plugs, the rest of us enjoyed it. Home by 7 am to treat our insect bites, and enjoy Pop’s special pancakes.

A chunk of snow/ice nailed LaP cam a few years ago. 70 mph off an IM. There is a railroad safety vid from mid 1970s on the dangers working in the rail yard, emphisize exactly what you are saying.
@retrozmachine11892 жыл бұрын
Too right. The mainline ran behind my house as a kid. These days most freight is containerised, and the railway has been bent around the town to boot, but back then it was a lot more tie down tarps and roped loads etc. It wasn't all that rare to see a train trundling past with something flapping away. I still cringe when I see rail-fans on youtube standing only feet away from the tracks. A belt whipping past at 100km/h will literally rip your head off.
@Clavichordist2 жыл бұрын
I saw strapping hanging loose off of a center beam flatcar rip the weeds and churn up the ballast. This strap whipping around was like a gigantic weed whacker doing its job. When the train got to an industrial park, the strapping took mirrors and hood ornaments off of some cars that were parked illegally along the entrance road. The owners of those cars were in for a shock when they returned home from work on the commuter train. They used to park on the road because they were too cheap to pay the $1.25 a day to park in the secure lot. Oops! After seeing that, I always stand back pretty far from the tracks when I see a train coming along as much as I'd love to stand closer to see the action.
@TheEDFLegacy2 жыл бұрын
@@Clavichordist It begs the question why passenger train stations have platforms that allow people to walk so close up even when there are no passenger trains nearby. I can only imagine a platform full of passengers, and suddenly a freight train with a dangling piece of something taking out dozens of people at once.

Colorado Pacific with its flashy neon blue. NP has lots of power pulls plus a weight thingy. K & O has a big showing in its home state. Lots of wonderful construction sci-fi gear out amphibians too. @beeble20032 жыл бұрын
No, almost certain to be a power move. Five or six of those locomotives will be switched off or just idling, and only on the train because they're being moved to where they'll be needed next. If they did need nine locomotives to shift the load, they'd be split up -- probably three on the front, three in the middle and three at the back, all remote-controlled from the lead unit. Putting all nine on the front would just break the knuckle of the first coupling as soon as you tried to put 40,000hp through it.
@davidurban68132 жыл бұрын
What were those passengers rains pulled by BNSF power? Office or executive trains?
@trishoconnor21692 жыл бұрын
Regarding the title clip: I think realistically, you can't avoid every possible fluke related to debris being flung aside by a train. It looked like if the train had been on the track right next to the platform at a station, that piece would have landed well onto the platform where passengers and the people seeing them off or picking them up routinely stand. If someone were hit by a piece of debris there, I think you have consider that a freak accident, not the person failing to "be safe."
@prarieborn64582 жыл бұрын
where id that picket fence come from? was it part of the platform, or was it on the tracks? just wondering..couldn’t make out the details on camera. . this is a cool channel., seeing all kinds of trains and engines..love those engines. My respect for them, their power and unstoppable-ness impresses me. I guess its from the days when my cars would break down in traffic and become un- moveable objects. No forward motion and lots of trouble. But those trains just keep motoring on.
@trishoconnor21692 жыл бұрын
@@prarieborn6458 Although at 8:52, the video highlights the train dragging the piece, it doesn't show how it came to be picked up by the train, so that must have happened off camera. It looks like something called a "type 3 traffic barrier." (If you google that phrase, you'll see images of such barriers. They're designed to be very portable.) My best guess is that the train had passed a crossing that was temporarily closed to car traffic, and one of the barriers that had been set out to block off the road had somehow fallen onto the track (perhaps after being placed too close to the rails).

At 14:10 that's the first time I've EVER seen a DPU on a HOG train! For those watching who have yet to check out the Cordele camera, HOG is short for Heart of Georgia, a Genesee and Wyoming shortline that runs through the area.
@beeble20032 жыл бұрын
Is it a DPU? Short lines often have a locomotive idling on the back of the train to switch facing-point spurs without needing to run around. It's only a DPU if it's remote-control and providing power to the train. The equipment for doing that is expensive and a railroad wouldn't buy it if they were going to use it so rarely that you'd be posting excited comments at seeing it for the first time. 😊

I've read, you are supposed to stop way back where the RR is painted on the road. NOT pull up next to the gates !!
@beeble20032 жыл бұрын
That's not true. The RR is painted far enough back down the road to warn people to slow down. Depending on the speed limit, it can be 250ft back down the road from the railroad, and it would be ridiculous to stop that far away. Indeed, it would be actively dangerous if it involved hard braking and there was somebody behind you. The gates should be far enough from the track that there's no realistic chance of being hit by anything. It's probably a good idea to stop a little farther back if there's snow on the ground, as the wall of snow that the ploughs leave at the edge of the road can freeze and get thrown pretty far by a fast train.
