One good rule would be that you alternate who goes first every hole, so the one who wins the hole doesn't go first but rather alternating.

I would even say the one who lost the last hole gets to go first as it seems like going first is quite the advantage.

Honestly both of the above suggestions are good but, I also feel like some sort of rebuttal rule should be placed. As in, how is the following scenario fair? If Trevor goes second on a hole, intentionally throws shorter than Hunter (after Hunter parks it, for a guaranteed birdie) so trevor guarantees throwing before hunter then, on his second shot, say lays up again, so that he has a third shot before Hunter can take his second.. then puts it in the basket.. now Hunter needs to go to the far basket and hope he gets par? In that situation, I personally feel like Hunter should be able to have a rebuttal, make his putt for birdie (and either still gain a stroke on Trevor and then either Trevor doesn’t need to play the long basket or the rules could be brutal and say that he now needs to play to the long basket.. in that scenario if Hunter then 3’s it, it could just negate also but, negate seems against the spirit of this variant.. just my two cents.. this could be a REALLY fun game variant. But seems adding rules to make it “fair” seem to take away from the spirit of the variant at the same time.

Or, since chess is 100% turn based, you could just ignore who is closer and literally just go every other.. that would be interesting…. Then whoever loses that hole goes first on the next.

Otherwise, the meta would be if you go first*, throw a crap drive intentionally and play it off as unintentional, let second go, then it’s just a matter of laying up further than the basket than the person before you and playing Yahtzee for who has the gusto to run it and take a chance. Sorry for the spam comments.. I just really like this variant and want to see a foolproof rule set come to fruition as this could be a VERY fun variant.

Can't putt into a basket that was putted into most recently? So if Hunter puts it into red, Brodie can't go into red until Trevor puts it into yellow (so if it's Brodie's turn, he has to try to beat Trevor to yellow and then come back to red if Trevor gets there first.)

We played this true alternate shot. One guy always tees 1st on odd holes other guy always tees first on the evens. 18 hoke layout and alternate shot the entire time. Worked great

In parts of MA we'll play 'Hollywood' where you can play to either layout, but the long pin gives you a half stroke back. You can play to either pin at any point. So for example birdying a par 3 would be a 2 on the short or a 1.5 on the long.

Really enjoyed this playing format. Seems to work mainly on courses with multiple basket layouts. Although with some more group brainstorming could come up with a way to do it on single-basket courses. There is potential for this to be a really great way to play with your friends if you can find ways to play with 3 or more people too.

We always call this game Close Out and the primary rule we would use is whoever is further from the long basket goes first. We also switch it up and flip a disc after the initial drives to see who goes first, among other ways to pick who goes next.

Have the losing person throw from the tee and the other person throw just to the side of the tee but you tee off together. That way the stratigy is a guess to what the other will do off the tee.

I think a good rule change would be that instead of the furthest disc going first it's the closest disc going first. It rewards well executed shots vs this format where it seemed well executed shots were punished

Alternating T shots not based on previous holes strokes. And you have to call your basket before you T off. So second person throwing can challenge your basket or accept the other basket.

Also whoever wins the hole can eliminate one of the discs used by their opponent on that hole. If both get the same score then no disc is eliminated.

I'm still waiting for actual disc golf CHESS - where they play 1 minute of chess in between every hole (with a total time limit of 5 minutes each on the chess clock which is 10 minutes total, starting with chess and playing after every hole for 1 minute, regardless who uses more time), every stroke over par loses you a minute off your total chess time, every stroke under par wins you a minute of time - winner is who checkmates first (or if opponent runs out of time on his chess clock)
