Күн бұрын

The original plan for this episode was to work our way down some of the east coast of New Zealand's beautiful South Island to collect as many Adventure Tokens as possible, finishing at a wonderful heritage building. As you can tell by the title of this video, that did not go to plan! Rob unfortunately managed to kill the clutch on his near-new BMW G310 GS.. These things do happen, but man did it turn into a day! We hope you enjoy guys!

Killed that clutch , for sure . That beach looked hard on the bikes. 🎉

Yeah, it was free-spinning in gear. Never a good sign. 😅 That sand was an absolute nightmare, but an excellent challenge.

Another exceptional effort. Couple of suggestions 1. Did you air down? 2. It’s normally 2nd or 3rd gear clutch dump (little bikes I know) 3. And have you seen the brake magazine episode about taking a clutch plate out , snapping it in two and putting it back in for a self rescue? Saw the headline, assumed it was mark who’d killed the b’mer.

Yeah I was watching and struggling to remember what young Mr Pavey said in that video! Trouble with so much engine protection is it might not be that easy to get into the clutch. On a dirt bike it's a piece of cake...!

Hey Richard, good to hear from you mate! The bikes were running trail pressure, yes. I agree that it's normally a 2nd gear clutch dump, however on the smaller cc bikes that just doesn't work. You have to try and build momentum to drop 2nd and get up on the plane. Can't say I've seen the episode you're talking about, but honestly it wasn't worth the trouble when rescue was the easiest option, given that we weren't too far out of town. 😅

The clutch wouldn't have been impossible to get to, a trail bodge job possibly would have worked, but it just wasn't worth the trouble to try anything on trail as rescue was an easy option in this scenario.

Good recovery of the body tbf.... And it could have been a lot worse... Could have been a 1250GS!
@TheBadIdeaBros

Haha, I said that exact thing on the day! 😅 "At least it's not a 1250!" It was a pretty easy recovery to be fair, we have definitely been in stickier situations.

Has that G310 got the Rally Raid rims on it? We have 2 of these bikes with full rally raid kits.

Yes, I believe that it does. I honestly think the 310GS would have been a heck of a lot more popular if it had of come with a factory option for spoked rims.

Bugga. That type of beach is nasty, very hard on man and machine by the look of it. It didn’t even look compacted near the water line like a pure sand beach.

Haha, yeah. This type of stuff can be an utter nightmare to ride in. There's no good line, you're guaranteed to sink and if you're lucky enough to get up on a plane for a while, the bike will undoubtedly try to buck you. Makes for an interesting challenge! 😅

We're definitely lucky here to have such a variety of riding in a relatively small area!

according to the Americans that ride on blow sand (which is all rounded off and doesn't hold onto the grain of sand next to it so is really soft) the trick is to keep the speed up & the weight off the front, so the tyres (or tires as they call them) don't have time to sink into the sand. I haven't ridden on deep sand yet, maybe when the chain starts to wear out, I'll give it that torture. but it sure works on deep pebbles. Any plans to head to the North Island and see the best part of the country? (the Coromandel peninsula)

The hardest part for us was getting to that point where we could lean back and ride the plane. You would have seen that it was possible and we did get there a few times, but having to stop so frequently meant starting all over again. The smaller class bikes needed to work their way up to that, so there was a lot of fighting in 1st gear while the bike was digging in before there was enough momentum that you could kick 2nd and get going on top of it all. It was quite frustrating and one heck of a work out. 😅 No specific plans for a North Island adventure currently, but it is an idea that's been thrown around more than once. I suspect it'll happen at some point. Thank you for taking the time to comment! Ride safe bro! ✌🏻

That beach would be a great place to demo 2 wd bike systems

It would definitely be an interesting spot to try a 2wd bike! To be honest, I genuinely think it'd still dig in, the sand/stones are a fickle surface to ride on!

Iv always found 2nd gear to be the best takeoff gear on beachs like thst mate

With a few more hp, I'd absolutely agree with you. But the 250/300 class bikes suffer from a lack of torque to be able to do that (in our case at least) so we found the best method was to try and build speed in first, bang 2nd, lean back and hold on. 😅 Always mixed results.
