You guys are awesome, nice set. Some thoughts from your favorite critique. The key to getting the spinnaker contained in the sock is blanketing the sail behind the mainsail; ( I usually head down 10 with my dongle under auto pilot ) If the spinnaker is in free air is a potential for disaster. Another hack; Pass the loop of the continuous sock control line through a snatch block on rail. Pass the double-ended (one side up, one side down) sock control line through a snatch block at the lee rail before you hoist or douse will prevent bad things happening either during a set or douse. Of course this is from my usual easy prospective angle. Much more difficult live in action. You did a great job!

Great ideas for the sock! We tend to twist it up a bit when we gybe. We were waiting for someone to say something about flying the kite with the reefed main for the exact reason it can make takedowns harder ;-) We also learned a new trick recently, if the kite wraps on a gybe, spike the tack quickly, unwrap bottom, sock it, tack it, re-launch.

I love how well equipped your boat is...I suppose it has radar too as it looks like one is mounted on your stern. When sailing at night I really wish we had a radar. There are no sudden reefing choices we have at night other than just put em in and let em ride. We just can't see a squall line or bad weather coming at all. Now keep in mind we have a standard rig Catalina 30 and we really don't have much sail area to begin with on the boat. Our best hull speed is about 6 knotsish. Our best sailing is typically around 5.5 knots, and we could never do 8 knots like you do unless we were riding a tidal wave or being lifted by a Sikorsky helicopter. At night we'll just put a single reef in the main and ride the Genoa for as much as it's worth.

Hey Allyn, thanks :-) Radar is a pretty nice thing to have, but you can surely get along OK without it. We do use it for squall watching more so than ships! But like you said, you can always just reef early and chillax at night ;-) Not a bad way to go!

Excellent video! You could just feel the boat accelerate when the chute went up. Very nice. Brave to fly it at night. That drone footage, just super, could watch it over and over.. Reminiscent of a few trips I've made from Marblehead to Bermuda to the Islands. Thanks so much Mark! Marblehead to Bermuda sounds excellent. Flying the drone is risky for sure. The Volvo boats have wide open transoms, piece of cake. On our boat, feels like standing at the craps table in Las Vegas with the drone placed on black! We had a crash on the first transatlantic, how we didn't take out the dodger and windgen and still have the drone is a mystery to us :-) One day we will go for that drone shot of surfing a wave in the southern ocean!!!

Great drone footage, wonderful for you to capture a memorable passage. Ouch! I can't recollect any other cruising KZbinrs flying a spinnaker at night, and wisely as they are unlikely to have a fraction of your skills. Offshore racing, especially without visibility of fellow competitors, is more of a focus on achieving the best you feel capable of, rather than decisions involving the behaviours of competitors. I hope more people get to watch your videos and begin to understand the rewards of great skills.

I would think that the drone would be very helpful specially with its altitude being able to get a large peripheral view at a great distance for other ships and land. What to say of low flights looking for obstacles in the water.

Hey Kurt! It is a really good idea in theory. In practice, because of battery life, wind conditions, sea state, rain/splashes, etc. flying the drone on a doublehanded boat offshore is not always easy on a regular basis. Plus, the DJI follow me feature sometimes looses the boat, if not supervised it is a potential drone loss scenerio. A top mast mounted camera may be a great compromise for full time view from above.

Great episode. Love seeing the kit up and the drone footage was superb. Sorry to see that Kate got hit by the drone on retrieval. You might think about Fabing a catching handle. I saw it done by another KZbinr but cannot remember who. They built an overlay for the bottom of the drone (sort of like the shell of a cell phone case) out of a single layer of carbon fiber cloth. Then they bonded on a carbon fiber tube about 6" long straight down from the bottom. This devise was held to the drone with rubber bands. to get the fit correct, they used CAD (Cardboard Aided Design) to make a prototype out of cardboard and tape before getting out the resin. The whole thing ended up weighing only a few ounces and actually made the drone a bit more stable due to lowering the center of gravity a bit. To retrieve the drone, you then just need to grab the tube on the bottom which is much easier than getting a good grip on the body between all of those spinning knives. On shore, you just unclip the rubber bands and remove the handle to go back to flat surface landings.

Love the drone footage- hate the grabbing it out the air on a rolling deck! Kate, work on that hand eye coordination- can't blame the drone (or, the driver!) Crazy question- would it have helped to set the pole say 15 degrees ahead, to reduce pumping & ensure consistent fullness & drive? Jes' axing, cuz it looked like the waves were dumping both the main & the spinnaker occasionally. I was surprised that you kept her up after dark, especially with the advanced auto-pilot acting up a little. A wind shift, an accidental gybe- no bueno @ say 2am when even the person on watch is struggling to maintain awareness! How's line chafe with the sea state & lighter air? I know you were running heavy plastic line covers, but the sea state was certainly causing a lot of rig motion...

Hi David. Glad you loved the drone bit. They are tricky to catch on the side deck in seas. Chafe isn't too big of an issue, but we prevent it when we can of course. Not much at a certain point can be done about rig motion.

Helpful tip about catching the drone...Free Range Sailing has an episode where they attached a bit of rope to a velcro strap that they put around the drone so there was a tail to grab. You should check it out and see if it's something that might work for you. Love that you're going around the cape instead of taking the easy route through the PC. Ok, question 1) It depends I guess, sometimes a while, a day or so, sometimes no time at all. I think it depends on the conditions a bit. 2) I think it is possible for dogs to get seasick, but Roxy seems not to. Probably like humans, some do, some dont.

Tie a rope around the drone and leave a small piece hanging so you have a handle to grab while landing on a moving boat. Seen Free Range Sailing do it and it worked Great for them. GL✌

OK let's just call it what it is, that spinnaker was really used more like a giant genoa or Code "D" with the main on the same side as the foresail versus a wing on wing setup. The setup worked great of course and added about 2-3 knots. However, for night sailing, NO WAY IN HELL I would have that sail up at night and then attempt to take it down as you all did. I guess being racers and thrill-seekers and young and stupid makes you do crazy sh&t stuff that most sailors would never attempt.
