She's beautiful. And it's super freakin' cool she has the option to fly away, but decided to hang around and be a team with you. Excellent. Very excellent. Now I know this doesn't compare, but I used to have a Quaker Parrot, also known as a Monk. And she was a she too. I decided, against all the advice of a gazillion other people, to let her flight feathers grow in. And after a few months she was capable of flying all around my home. Well, long story short, one time she was on my shoulder, as she usually was, and I simply forgot she was there, because it was so "natural" for her to be there, and the UPS guy rang the door bell for something to sign (something I've noticed they don't do any longer, they simply drop your box onto your porch and run back to their truck, but anyway...) and there she was, faced with the wide open blue sky. I noticed her there after I had already opened the front door and I froze. She immediately flew up into that sky and perched on one of the 3 lamp posts along our long driveway. The middle one. I was super nervous, but didn't say anything or do anything. I pretended it was no big deal. The UPS guy left, which was added to the anxiety of it all, there's my awesome bird over there on the middle lamp post. But I remained calm and simply spoke to her as I always did. After a few minutes I guess the novelty wore off for her and she flew right back to me! I was stoked!! She could have simply flown away, but instead made her own mind up to come back. The level of respect went up another level right there. Anyway, I can relate. Thumbs up.

What a beautiful blessing she has gifted you with, her freedom. And you and your family are also a blessing to her... Could there be a greater gift than for a majestic bird like the red tail that soars the skies freely to come down from its lofty estate and be your companion. Tears came to my eyes to watch her fly to you in slowmo... Like I said before, I am no falconer, I just see the red tail as a spiritual thing of nature. Thanks for sharing Carol with us. Thank you Carol...

The relationship that can be formed between man and birds of prey is quite incredible. When I was a child we sometimes visited distant relatives and friends in southern Germany. One man there owned quite a bit of land surrounding a small crystal clear river. The fishing was incredible, never seen such density of trouts and grayling, all wild and healthy. Turned out one of the reasons was hawks. He had a few large hawks (don't know which kind), which he regularly let go near the river. This scared away all the birds that otherwise would have an easy time catching fish in the clear water. Apparently the fish eaters learnt after a few years and usually stayed clear of that area. Wish you good luck with that intelligent and beautiful animal.

@@BrysenJacobsen Most states dont require a sponsor to take the test.. Infact, alot of sponsors wont sign off on you unless you have already taken the test.... The reason being, is passing the test and taking the exam shows the potential sponsor that your actually going to do this. I couldnt find the actual laws in washington, but i would definitely double check that regulation if you don't have a sponsor and are waiting to take the test to find one.

I was almost as excited as you to see how this would go. Watching a couple of the falconers who are in the Cornell Red-tailed Hawk group working their birds over the past 5 years has given me a glimpse into what this sport means. I get goose-bumps watching the action. And watching you doing such a SUPER beautiful job with Carol gives me the same feelings. I'm teary eyed watching the interaction between Carol and your family as it's such a closeness not found in a lot of animal interactions especially ones that we normally consider definitely 'wild' without much human interaction. She trusts you and you trust her so it's spectacular to watch. Thank you for making these videos so we can join in on watching this relationship continue to blossom. Can hardly wait to watch her hunt. The ultimate goal!!! Bless your beautiful family.

Great job with Carol👏👏 what an accomplishment for you and the family. I have a red tail hawk that visits my house every Monday morning. One day it slammed into my window trying to catch a dove so it comes back every week to check out the area as if it remembers that this is where it caught the dove and looks for it or to find more. It's a great feeling to have such an amazing hawk be that close. I wish I was in your shoes to be able to be a falconer. Thanks for sharing.

@andrewpanozzo65356 жыл бұрын
Hey Maxx, I’m about 1:35 into the video and noticed you saying she’s still not a fan of the hood and you’ve had some trouble with hoods fitting right. With hoods make sure there’s no opening allowing light to shine where the pieces of leather in front of her eyes is, this typically causes raptors to become very hood shy amongst other things. Best of luck, can’t wait to see her free flying at the end of this!

I kinda had to laugh a bit when she flew into that tree, because I know that feeling so well that my own Harris Hawk tought me so much. The second she turned around to look where you are, I knew that she would come down soon. They just love to enjoy the view once they are up in a higher tree, but they will come down when the meat offer is big enough :) I really love how well she responds to you, you kept her in the right condition to free fly and I look forward to your and her first kill, so she will finally earn her name. Congratulations are in order! You have embarked on and achieved something a small percentage of the population will ever experience. The feelings of each milestone in the journey are so scary and exciting; the trapping process, the first bite of food, the first jump to the fist, all the way down the line to this moment of the first flight followed by taking the first quarry. Lessons are learned so far, and many more will come with persistence in the sport. I know you are enjoying the journey and you are allowing so many more folks to experience it along the way.
