We talk about the Suzuki DR650, the DR 650 history the DR650 pros and cons as a dual sport motorcycle and adventure bike. We will discuss how the bike fits in the dual sport market and if the DR650 is any good for the average rider. DR650 suspension, DR650 wheels, Dr650 Engine and Dr650 Seat are all discussed. I will show you my personal DR650 and a bit about how I ride it.
We will talk about how the Dr650 compares to the KLR650 and the XR650 and which one may be right for you and why I chose the DR650 as my motorcycle. We also talk about on and off road manors of the motorcycle.

Probably one of the most underrated bikes out there. I actually like the stock suspensions. Roads around here are in very bad condition, and with my 190lbs, it soaks up the bumps really well. It's a lot more fun going fast on a slow bike and slow on a fast bike :) I just recently bought my 2018, I went to see a few and man o man are some DRs in bad shape! Some have been dropped on every side, no maintenance log, owners have never heard about valve check, etc...but when you find a nice one, you jump on it!

Excellent analysis. I love my DR650 2007. I have been the first and only owner. My love is not like a religious of fanatic idolatry, but a rational appreciation of its simplicity and versatility. It takes me wherever I need or want to go, and the way I like!

The bonus of the DR being a simple bare bones bike is it makes it a blank canvas to build the bike you want, like the old Brit bikes from back in the day, multi purpose. I bought my first DR back in 1998 to use as a courier bike after owning a KLR 650 and KLX 650, I sadly sold the DR after 2 years and 115,000 Klm’s of trouble free riding, unlike the Kawasaki’s, nothing but issues. Then in 2005 returned to courier work and bought another DR, 474,000 Klm’s and 9 years of a few problems, but not super expensive issues, then 2014 DR number 3, 7 years and 296,000 Klm’s with no issues, am I happy ? Hell yes. I wanted a bike that would start every morning, last a day in stop start traffic, sit on highway speeds, have low overheads, then on the weekend take me to the backroads, mission complete. And by the way 2021 is the last year of the DR here in Australia due to no ABS, the fun police spoil another fun pastime. I look at it this way, a DR 650 will go everywhere a 3 times more expensive BMW GSA 1250 will go, apart from a dealership to be serviced, but the GSA 1250 will not go where the DR can go, with similar skilled riders, makes the DR 650 the best bike on the market . 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

One reason why the bike is unchanged is emission regulations. As long as Suzuki keeps the bike in same specs they are allowed to keep on. There are rumours that 2023 will be the last year sold in Australia.

Great video and very informative. I usually buy well - used vehicles but I'm buying a new DR650. Old DR's with mileage and wear are selling for 60% to 70% of the cost of a new one. Even the one in this video had lots of mileage and wear but was only 50% off new cost. Considering the risk of buying used, the wear, the need for repairs, a safety inspection in Ontario etc, its better value, in the long run to buy a new DR. Their low price new and strong resale value makes this a logical decision

I thought this was a great video Dino. Covered the DR650 in good depth, along with some of it's family in the DR line. It was also just a nicely put together piece on the subject of dual sport bikes and technology/features vs simplicity/ease of maintenance. You had a good focus on speaking to those who are new to the information you present, but also not becoming so tedious that you turn away those who already know the material. I enjoyed it, and I hope you keep producing more videos. I also think Carl's a hoot and look forward to more of him.

After riding big heavy v twin Harleys for many years, I decided to get a bike that can get off the main roads and see the back country in the foothills of the Rockies. Yes Now own one Owned many enduros between 1970 on. Why I purchased this bike. Carburetor Simple pickup ignition Oil cooling Air cooled* History of reliability. Cornucopia of upgrades I love riding this bike. It is stock sans the carb jetting which was insanely lean. It is so light in terms of handling and picking it up on a trail. I adventure biked it as far as bags and a back rack. Being that Big Single cylinder Thumpers are a joy for me to ride. I couldn’t of chosen a better bike. 😊

I bought the 2021 dr 650 as my first bike and I absolutely love it. I used to ride mountain bikes for 4 plus hours and have conditioned myself to pretty harsh seats. But all around the suspension is great and the ride is comfortable. Great bike to learn on.

This is one of the best videos I’ve seen on the DR650. I’ve been pretty split between the DRZ400 and the DR650. I’m still trying to figure out how much I’ll actually hit technical trails that this bike would struggle on.

It's a tough call between the two bikes for sure. The 650 fits my riding style well and I like the extra displacement but I don't think one is really better than the other just a slightly different focus. As you say, the 650 is a bit more street bias I think. Good luck, that's a tough choice. Dino

Maybe we can make the choice a bit easier in that with the over populated roads freeways and main throughways a dr400 might push one towards more dirt applications with lesser travelled back roads...just my thought.

Was looking for a dual sport in 2007 and had a hard choice between the DR and KLR. Ended up getting the KLR (perceived better aftermarket here in the US, not sure if I was right). Still have it and it has been a good bike, but have always regretted not getting the DR. Similar bikes from the 80's but the DR's lighter weight and air cooling put the DR ahead in my opinion. I'd get one today if I were looking for a new bike. Current KLR is 100 pounds heavier. Imagine strapping two 50 pound bags of sand onto your loaded DR650 and hitting the trails! Quick, buy a DR while you can!

The KLR is a great bike in its own right and I do think you are right about the aftermarket for them. I do agree though making the bike heaver really defeats the idea of a middle weight adventure bike and makes even less sense if you view it as a dual sport ride. Thank you for your comment Dino

Enjoyed the video, you went over every point, that was great. I've had a DR650 for 17 years and it's still holding up great. The stock seat is fine for me, never really thought about it being too hard or narrow. Also I've never upgraded the suspension. I ride on very rough, rocky, rutted, and steep trails in Colorado, and the suspension works great for me. It's comfortable on that rough terrain. I wouldn't change it for something more stiff, that wouldn't make any sense at all unless you're racing enduro or something. And then, you would need a different bike anyway. However, one thing the bike does need for off-roading is better tires.

Thank you for the feed back, I agree with your comments, I do think that there are better seats out there but I believe also that there is a lot of internet pressure saying how bad it is, the same goes for the suspension, I think most people would find it to be just fine other than perhaps a heavier rear spring if you are , like me a bit bigger. Of course this depends on how you ride, I mostly ride gravel and fairly tame trails so it works good for me. As you said if you are using it more as an enduro or really hard off road riding than perhaps suspension upgrades are warranted. Thank you for you feedback. and I am glad you enjoyed the video. Dino

Just picked up a ‘90 dr650 with kickstart. It has to be one of the nicest gearboxes I’ve ever used. Easy no clutch up/down shifts, just snick snick snick like a sewing machine. Amazing. Also has a 21l fuel tank as standard. I guess they shrunk that in later models.

Great video Dino. Just had to subscribe. I ride the Ontario Quebec border in Hawkesbury. Probably the best choice in a bike for all the reasons you explain. I'm riding a 2019. Modest modifications to make it comfortable and mine. Mountains or highway, swapping the front sprocket turns the big girl from an offroader to a highway star.

A great review, I bought a 2001 with 7,000 miles for one grand new oil change and car mod we’re already done, I didn’t realize why a gem I actually bought I will add nothing, it goes anywhere I point it but fire-roads are my favorite ride I’ve taken it off on some pretty ruff trails and it just keeps going I love the simplicity of the machine I was looking at the KLR or Honda and I’m glad the DR came first as it’s truly in between the other two.

This was excellent. I have had a DR650 for a few years. Bought because air cooled, carby, chain drive, if dropped will not cost a fortune. Seat is tough but I made a lambswool cover. No suspension mods( I weigh 74kg). I did shorten the sidestand as it sits too upright when the big Safari fuel tank and side bags are full. I have ridden in Australian desert and shipped it overseas. I do have a big touring bike (AUST like Canada - lot of distance between places) - but the tourer is too heavy in the bush - I would never pick up a loaded tourer in the sand/rocks. Liked your logical presentation.

For us who live in developing countries, with lots of gravel roads, scarce mechanical support in the country side and low fuel quality, simplicity and relaiability is way more important than performance. I ride an KLR due to its better comfort in long rides, however have realized that the 34kg less of the DR is a significant plus. Greetings from Bolivia 🇧🇴

You will also like the 20 liter gas tank will get you around 500 Km per tank, Did not on my first DR 650 and was the main reason I traded it so made sure my new on had it on before it left the shop. Also would recommended Dunlop TrailMax Mission tires. If getting it new have the switch to them as part of the deal they made a straight swap for me, on my KTM 390 Adventure, and wish I would of don the same on the DR650, but they are on the DR650 now and well worth it, when you hit loos gravel or sand. Will also out last the stock tires 2 to 1 or more.

1991 I bought one new. Most comfortable ride ever for me I didnt need a throttle stop or anything for all day highway riding. I'm 5'7" however and off road presented challenges atleast it was a breeze to push or pickup. I was getting ~60mpg feather footing and the tank was large >4.5 gls.

@@DinosTinkerShed Well its littlebrother the 400 was a tower! I remember that I did get the shop to apply the lowering 'kit' plus I changed the tyres and the chain before I took delivery. It had a tach too which I use to 'feather foot' to maximise fuel range. I made some 10-12 hour tours then when I gota dog and had a van pool door to work to door service I wasnt using it and sold it after 4 years..

Thanks for sharing. I use motorcycle chain wax on my cables. IMHO it will be there till the cows come home and I'll never have to replace a cable, especially the clutch cable. IMHO after the rebuild I think the float valve should be tested by draining the oil out if the engine into a clean container, put a lid on it, hook up your fuel IV gadget and see if fuel starts dripping out of the oil drain hole. If it does you wasted your time and money, but I have confidence in you and ProCycle and I think the float valve will work properly, so install the oil drain plug and put the same clean oil back in the engine if you want to.

What a great tip on the chain wax, thank you. I have never thought about testing the float bowl like that, I think it would work well. I have had good luck over the years setting the height of the float with no issues. The only time I had a problem was when I accidently blew out the seat with compressed air. Thank you Ronald, I wish I could provide a good answer to the question. I've never ridden at that elevation. Like any carb I would think it would require some re-jetting to run at its best. Dino

Hi Dino, there are few DR650's advertised locally & I want to pick one up but looking for electric start ,do you know what year electric start was introduced please? Did a quick search & couldn't find the info. Thanks & thanks for such informative videos!

After 1996 all dr650s only came with electric start. Although some models prior to 96 did have electric start it was an option or limited to certain model variations of the Dr650 and not across the entire model range. Your best bet is to look for one 1996 or later. Hope this helps. Dino

At the moment it is stock. I do have a pro cycle jet kit that I will be installing but I bought it to allow the adjustability of the pilot circuit more than increased performance. I have not yet filmed this episode but it is planned. Thank you for the question. Dino

I am an Australian and a Dr650 fan and I can personally recommend the bushpig, she took me through the outback on the roughest roads with no problems at all, put a Dunlop 606 on the back and a pirelli m21 on the front, I have the safari tank she dose 700 kilometres on one fill and a Sargent seat barret racks I have stock exhaust and stock suspension, she is more like a tractor than motocross, but she is bulletproof and just about every farmer has one in the shed, so parts are always in stock. There is no better choice of steed buy one and enjoy. I bought mine new and will never sell her she is more loyal than a wife.

I'm on my second Dr. And I'm having a hard time explaining my friends on KTMs that I want to have something I can fix in the middle of nowhere if needed, and not require dealership or insane computer skills and software. They do admit that Dr is going to outlast their bikes many times over but too attached to flashy colors and a need to have "ktm". At least they admit LOL

The DR650 is officially being discontinued in Australia. North America won't be to far behind. Suzuki is releasing a new line of bikes for 2023. I love my 2020 DR, it's my first road legal bike.

I have also understood the DR650's life cycle is coming to an end, In Canada they are still advertising it as being available in 2023 on their website but I think it will be inevitable that it is replaced soon. I have read that Suzuki has developed a 70cc twin that may find its way into the V-Strom chassis, this could also make a great competitor in the small adventure buke market if it is done well. Thank you for the review as I am looking pretty hard at a 2004 DR 650 with 17,000 miles on it . Currently riding a 1978 Suzuki PE175 and RM 250 in the dirt and sounds like the DR650 is a good transition to on /off road fun !👍

The DR is a capable 50/50 dual sport, it will not keep up with the RM in the dirt but it is reliable as a stick, can cruise all day on the highway (if your butt can handle it) and has a great after market and community. I've owned a number of bikes over the years and by far this one is the most fun one to ride. 17,000 miles is nothing to worry about if the bike was maintained well, I have heard some rides say there DR's are over 100,000 miles with little to not issues other than maintenance and tires. on my second DR650 and also had the 600, as well as the KLR 2007. KLR great bike, but put a 20 liter gas tank on the DR650 and the Dr650 wins, at least for me. I now have a DR650 with a 20 liter gas tank, better hand guards and a bash plate and center stand. I also just put Dunlop TrailMax Mission tires on, and put a bracket for the GIVI Trekker 46 liter top box, the TrailMax Mission tires are the best 50/50 tire I have ever had and they last. I also have a KTM 390 Adventure witch I put the Trekker 33/46 hard bags on and the better KTM skid plate and hand guards. Both bikes are keepers. and also have the Dunlop TrailMax Mission tires on the KTM had them put on before the bike left the show room. I do find the DR650 better on rough gravel and dirt roads, and feels better when you hit deep sand, but the KTM is not far behind. Think the DR wins because of the thinner 21" front wheel. Love all the options that come on the KTM Traction control you can turn off ABS 2 settings on road and off road, adjustable suspension front and rear, and the computer system that tells you more than you will ever need to know, all controlled by our left thumb. 2 in the stable and loving it.

I owned a DR650 many years ago. I've owned a few bikes since my DR, but it's the one i keep thinking about going back to. My biggest complaint of the bike is the gearing, all the other perceived shortcomings are easily remedied. I'd like to see the gears spread out in a way that gives you a true granny gear at the bottom end, and an overdrive at the top end. 1st is too high & 5th is too low.

I love my 1990 DR exactly because of the maintenance. On the DR you take off the tank and there's pretty much nothing you can't access. A grand total of what? 3 bolts? No coolant to be pissed all over your shoes and floor as you unbolt the radiator so you can access your valves, the carb can stay in place and you don't have to sync it with anything, no need for a special slim spark plug socket because the DR's plugs are actually accessible. My only gripe with the DR is the balancer chain tension since if you're keeping up with the schedule you'll need a stator cover gasket once a year, which is very wasteful as I don't like replacing gaskets that don't leak. I'm planning to remedy that the next time I check the tension by figuring out if I can just drill some holes in the stator cover and cutting some threads for plugs.

Hi middlehot The windscreen on my bike came with it but with no hardware. It is branded with a BMW logo and looking around I think it is off of a 1999 to 2003 f650 Dakar. I wish I could be more helpful Dino

The BMW wind screen I have works well for me, it is large enough to protect me from most of the wind and covers my GPS. I think it is a good option if you have the tools and skills to retrofit it to the DR, if not I think I would try the parablelum brand, it looks similar in size and also looks well made. I hope this helps, I can only comment on my experience but other on here may be able to comment on other option. Dino

Thank you for the comment, I use the windscreen that came with the bike when I bought it. As far as I can tell it is a BMW Dakar 650 windscreen, I had to make the mounts to make it work. I do have a video about it as well. Thanks again. Dino

So why is it that the 400 costs so much more than the 650? I'm gonna buy my first bike in the spring and I'm leaning towards the 650.

I am not 100% sure and I'm sure others can help with this as well, but I think it is the fact the 400 is a bit more technologically advanced in both engine design (liquid cooled vs air cooled) and in the suspension department where I understand it is a bit better as well. tough choice to make. for me it was the simplicity of the 650 that made the choice a bit easier. I have nothing against modern bikes but when I bought my DR650 I wanted a bit of a project to tinker on and it fit the bill for me. Hope this helps Dino

Great video, you're a natural. Helpful and informative. After watching yours and the Cross Training guy, I bought a 2023. No used ones worth a darn. BUT I AM TRULY UPSDET THAT I BOUGHT IT! WHY? Because looking over the owners manual, I have to re torque the heads and disassemble motor to adjust the counter balance adjuster! PLEASE HELP with some suggestions. I bought a simple bike, because around here I would not trust a mechanic to put air in my tires. Seriously, I am so discouraged I am thinking about selling it. Please understand, I love the ride and looks as it is stock. But opening the motor just throws cold water on the whole deal. I have no issues adjusting the valves. Also the decompression needs attention often. SUB'd and T-up ! THANKS in advance for the hopefully encouraging words. Maybe I got some bad info!

Thank you for the comment and the questions. As I often do I will point out I am not a mechanic but will provide my opinions when asked. Firstly congratulations on the new DR650, and I am sorry if you are having some concerns over the maintenance. As I bought mine used I did not receive an owners manual but instead have the Clymer's service manual that I use for maintenance and repairs so I cannot comment on the owners manual information. However, there are a few items that confuse me. 1. the counter balancer on 1996 and newer is gear driven and should not need adjustment as it is indexed to the crankshaft gears. I do not believe there is any adjustment required or available for the 1996 or later models. I believe before 1996 the balancer was chain driven and did require periodic adjustment but I am not 100% sure as I am not really familiar with that engine. 2. Again, I do not have access to the owners manual, but re-torqueing the head bolts is not in the Clymer manual at any of the service intervals. If there is a requirement after 1000km or so, I would think this would be covered by the dealer you purchased this from no? If it is brand new could you call the dealer and clarify? 3. The decompression valve is internal on the 1996 and later and There is no adjustment listed in the manual I have. It almost sounds like you are looking at a pre 1996 manual not a new 2023 owners manual. I know I don't seam to be offering much help here and I'm sorry, but I think a talk with the dealer may help out to clarify some of these questions. Dino

I'm not sure, I have never had a center stand on the DR. There are a few available, you may need to do a bit of research. I will be testing trail jacks in a future episode so that may also be an option. Thank you for the question Dino

A centre stand will make tire repairs much easier and since the ride to Tuk will not mean any serious off road or single track riding it will be a good addition.
