I was going to say the same! I knew she trained as an opera singer first! The Operatic community gave her a lot of flack for taking "the easy way" as they put it! Her range is unbelievable!

I also noticed people recommending "Hell is for Children" and while it is an amazing Pat Benatar song for many reasons; since you are parents I thought I should warn you the song is a vivid depiction of child abuse. She and her husband actually started a foundation for abused children after they released it.

Growing up on music of that era we simply rocked out on songs like Hell. Understanding of lyrics came later. Artists must know this. And I’m glad because I wouldn’t want to be saddened by the first listen of that totally rockin’ song.

Imagine being there in 1979 when this blasted out of the radio the first time. We were all absolutely blown away--she came otu of nowhere, with that voice. If you weren't rocking so hard to it all, you would have stood there with your mouth hanging open in astonishment at what you were hearing. We all knew we were hearing someone who would be huge. How could she not be with that incredible voice, and that three jean sizes too small tight sound backing her up? I was 17 when it came out, and, believe me, I'm so grateful to have been a young person at such a time. Luckiest music generation--EVER.

A couple of fun side facts: the lead guitarist, Neil Giraldo, is Pat's husband and her songwriting partner. 39 years married now, and they still perform together. Also, when MTV premiered, a Pat Benetar video was the second song they played, and since there were no guitars on the first song ("Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles), that makes Giraldo the first guitarist to ever appear on MTV.

Yes! It's been said a hundred times already, but "Hell Is For Children" is a banger! Rockin' tune in it's own right, then add the message of the lyrics and it hits hard. You'll love it.

My dad introduced me to her music in the early 80s. We'd listen to her cassettes on long road trips. I surprised my dad 20 years ago and took him to see Pat live at a small venue in NH, Hampton Casino Ballroom. Pat was literally 10 ft in front of us on a small stage and her husband Neil roamed around in the audience with his guitar. She did an a capello version of True Love that was phenomenal. It was an amazing and intimate show. My dad talked about it for weeks. Drove my mom nuts.

Pat Benatar, one of the great trailblazers for women in music. No offense meant to Whitney Houston fans, but it was a stone-cold CRIME that she was bumped from induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year with an out of nowhere, last-minute insertion of Whitney into the Hall. A CRIME! Because without Pat Benatar, Whitney would *not* have had her career. Benatar opened doors that later female musicians walked through to their own success.

I am so glad you are discovering one of the greatest voices in rock. She has no match as far as I'm concerned. She now opens the door for so many contemporary singers, and they owe her a hell of a debt. I grew up listening to Pat Benatar and many others of her generation back then. I was a teenager during the 80s, so I'm thankful I could experience all of this growing up. I'm so glad you are discovering what actual singing is and what true rock and roll is keep it up. Promises in the dark is another one of my all-time favorites of hers. I think it shows her vocal range probably the best.

Thanks so much for covering this song, guys! It's probably my favorite PB song. Others who commented previously that "Love is a Battlefield" is not really typical of Pat's overall style are correct. What you heard here is more akin to the majority of her work. Sidenote: Those harmonies are all her. She performed in musical theatre and trained in opera for years before making a sharp turn to rock. Sidenote 2: That lead guitarist (in the royal blue shirt) is her husband, Neil Giraldo. They've been married for close to 40 years.
