Some people called this song an old-school smooth jazz classic!!! This song was Grover Washington Jr's breakthrough r&b crossover hit. The song peaked at the #16 spot on the Billboard Soul chart. And it did peaked at the #54 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the summer of 1975. This is no doubt a sure-fire banger song indeed.
@chrisa46952 жыл бұрын
True. But the term smooth jazz did not emerge until the mid-80’s. Grover Washington, Jr., Ronnie Laws, David Sanborn, Bob James, and George Benson bridged the gap between 70’s Jazz Fusion and 80’s Smooth Jazz.

This is absolutely representative of the 70s CTI/Kudu label output, largely due to the arrangers (Bob James in this case). Funky and soulful. I have just about everything released on that label and would recommend any one of them. There was a group of top class musicians who all played on each other's albums. Hank Crawford was a contemporary of Grover (listen to Teach Me Tonight) and in fact Grover got his first CTI gig when Hank Crawford couldn't make a recording session and Grover was called in. Trumpeter Freddie Hubbard had some great albums on that label, my favourite being Red Clay (the song and the album). The great Herbie Hancock played on that. Eric Gale was the guitarist you enjoyed so much and yes, Grover played on his albums. They also had vocalists e.g. Esther Phillips with a great version of What a Diff'rence a Day Makes. I could go on and on (oops, I already have) but I'll stop there.

This is such a beautiful piece of jazz! Thank you for listening to this tonight. So calming and healing. ❤ I don't know what jazz y'all have reacted to already, but I'd recommend for instrumentals only: Joe Sample "Night Flight" (there are tons of songs with this name out there, so make sure you get Joe's!) 😊 Dave Brubeck "Take Five" Kenny G "Songbird" Duke Ellington & John Coltrane (two jazz greats joined together to make this piece) "In a Sentimental Mood" George Gershwin "Rhapsody in Blue" (17:35 mins long, but worth every single second - genius!) Glenn Miller "In the Mood" (big band-era jazz at its best) and "Moonlight Serenade" (so relaxing!) You already heard a snippet of "The Girl From Ipanema" when the Blues Brothers were riding in the elevator; you should really hear the whole song at least once because it is a classic jazz song by Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto. For jazz with lyrics sung, try these songs: Frank Sinatra's cover of "I've got you under my skin" or "Fly Me To The Moon" Ella Fitzgerald "Summertime" (a lullaby written by George Gershwin) Billie Holiday "Let's Call The Whole Thing Off" (also covered by Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, which is also a great version) Louis Armstrong with Velma Middleton "The St Louis Blues" Gene Kelly "I Got Rhythm" from An American in Paris (watch the movie clip so you can see him dance!) :D Of course, anything by Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, George Gershwin, Miles Davis, or Glenn Miller is worth hearing. They're all incredible. :) For a bit of modern fun, try Cherry Popin' Daddies "Zoot Suit Riot" written in 1997. Technically, this is swing, not jazz, but I just really want you to hear this song! I wore my CD out listening to this song and the rest on it. :) Okay, this should keep you busy for a while. I'll quit. Lol :)

Most saxophone solos in most songs are usually fairly short, so the person playing rarely has a chance to really let loose or improvise. Instrumentalists like the late Grover Washington Jr. really are allowed the freedom to go many places within the song. Even more so when they play live. This was a treat for me especially because I got to see Grover play live when I was fairly young. The memories from it are priceless.

Jazz?! One of my favorite artists and songs that I've suggested for about a year?! 😯 I don't know what to do with myself right now! 😄 I'll really lose it if you ever listen to *The Manhattan Transfer* (their unique style is Vocalese/jazz/bebop...and more) and also the comedy songs I've suggested many times. 🙂 It's still one we listen to during long car rides. I knew you'd like this song and I'm so happy that you've finally gotten to it. 👍🏽😀👏🏽 This song was/I'd always played a lot in my family and during family gatherings. This song is also popular with a lot of Steppers, at least where I live. Jazz songs are often quite a bit longer than Pop, R&B, etc, so you're going to get a lot of the featured instruments, whether it be piano, saxophone, trumpet, etc. Check out his song "Winelight", next. Also.... *Boney James* (saxophone player with various guest vocalists, but mostly instrumentals) "Butter" "Ride" "Sarah Smile" (Hall & Oates song) "It's All Good" "So Beautiful" *Something Inside* *Michael Franks* (smooth jazz vocals) "Baseball" (can sports references be romantic? Listen and learn.) "Ladies Night" (duet with Bonnie Raitt) "The Art of Love" "Your Secret's safe" "When I Give My Love to You" (duet with Brenda Russell) "Now Love Has No End" (duet with Valerie Simpson. Hope you listen to Ashford & Simpson)

Grover Washington Jr. lived around the corner from me for a while when I was growing up. My neighbor babysat his son. "The Best is Yet to Come " featuring Patti LaBelle and "Just the Two of Us" featuring the late great Bill Withers are a must. 💛

Back in the 70’s Grover Washington, Jr. was one of about a dozen artist who had regular airplay on R&B radio. The term smooth Jazz was coined in the 80’s. Grover Washington, Jr. was one of the artists who bridged the gap between 70’s Jazz Fusion & 80’s Smooth Jazz. He was on Kudu Records and label of CTI home to some of the bests acts of the era including Bob James, George Benson, Wes Montgomery, Freddie Hubbard, Hubert Laws, Stanley Turrentine and others. The artists usually played on each other’s solo work. Many other them were more successful as sidemen but nearly all became legends.
