'Move on up' has great lyrics... Move On Up / Lyrics Main Results Hush now child And don't you cry Your folks might understand you By and by Just move on up Towards your destination Though you may find, from time to time Complication Bite your lip And take a trip Though there may be wet road ahead And you cannot slip Just move on up For peace you will find Into the steeple of beautiful people Where there's only one kind So hush now, child And don't you cry Your folks might understand you By and by Move on up And keep on wishin' Remember your dream is your only scheme So keep on pushin' Take nothing less Than the supreme best Do not obey rumors people say 'Cause you can pass the test Just move on up To a greater day With just a little faith, if you put your mind to it You can surely do it Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Curtis L. The soundtrack album for the film "Superfly" was a smash hit and it is today regarded as one of the best film soundtracks of all time. The song "Superfly" was a top 10 hit as well as "Freddy's dead". Curtis Mayfield received some criticism for contributing to a film about a drug dealer, but when you listen to the songs, they were clearly anti-drugs/gangster songs. I bought the LP album when it first came out and still have it (plus the expanded cd version released decades later).

A few years ago, many people in the comments (including me) told the person who posted the video that it was William, not Curtis, and that the song title was also wrong. Some of the people put links to other uploads of the song that had the right singer & title, even a video of William performing it on "Soul Train". He refused to believe it, argued with the people who were trying to tell him the right information, and then turned off the comments.

It's remarkable how much William DeVaughn sounds like Curtis here so I can see how there's confusion, but the important thing is you got to hear a soul classic :). The late 60s/early 70s just had the best soul music. To this day my top 5 soul artists come from that period: Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Al Green and Donny Hathaway. You can't do enough songs by any of them!

Doesn’t matter as the description hasn’t been corrected to give William DeVaughn credit for writing and singing the song. Mr. DeVaughn is still alive and probably struggling to get corrected royalties for the incorrectly credited uploads. And since Rob Squad are supposed to be “musical experts,” their failure to correct the misinformation is especially disappointing.
@Shrykespeare
@Shrykespeare Жыл бұрын
William DeVaughn is the original writer and singer of “Be Thankful for What You Got”. Curtis Mayfield, in fact, never recorded the song. His “Diamond in the Back” is simply a miscredited version of DeVaughn’s song. The singers have very similar vocal styles, instrumental backings, and lyrical content. Mayfield’s popularity by 1974 quickly caused people to attribute the song to him. For a Curtis classic, try "Superfly". It's a funk classic.

Twice a week when he took our group of me and three other students out, to drive the back roads during the last period of the day, he let one student pick the radio station we listened to each driving session. One of the guys in my group, Perry, had tuned into the R&B station when this song came on and there he was, trying to pimp with the gangsta lean while driving that old pale yellow drivers ed car. This song has such a powerful cultural context. In order to fully understand you need to see what 70's gangster white walls look like. In that era there was a vinyl leatherette covering that could ordered by the salesperson. On the classic Cadillac Coupe de Ville, an enormous car with a huge 8 cylinder engine, that covering could be extended across the back window with the exception of a diamond shaped cutout, hence the "diamond in the back". This was the era of the wide brim hats adorned with a large feather, the maxi-coat, the 6 inch platforms for men and the slick gangster style bop strut with a distinct lean to one side. In unguarded moments our former president, Barack Obama had a mild version of this walking style. Hip hop later adapted some of the elements of that era and took it in their own direction. This song shows off a pace, instrumentation, and groove specific to a set of street values, lost to time. Curtis Mayfield was a "king" in that era, although his career extends well beyond it in either direction towards the 60's with the Impessions, as well as into the 80's. He did the soundtrack for a classic film starring Dianne Carroll called Claudine. The soundtrack, performed by Gladys Knight and the Pipe in their post-Motown era contains the DIVINE song The Makings of You. It will melt you like butter in a hot summer kitchen. I believe Curtis later covered it himself. You have not done enough of either of these artists AND the film Claudine is worth checking out as well.

The diamond in the back that you used to see on limos or the fanciest town cars in NYC or Chicago was the TV antenna. Unsurprisingly it was diamond shaped and normally mounted on the trunk. Incorrect. The “ Diamond in the back “ was the diamond shaped back window, usually surrounded by leather. I know because my uncle had a 1982 Cadillac Brougham with a diamond shaped window in the back. Whenever he would leave in his car, that was the song he was playing.

This is not Curtis Mayfield. This had been a confusion for DECADES, not so much the similarities in their beautiful voices, but the stupidity of people advertising this as Curtis Mayfield. That said, William DeVaughn's "Be Thankful For What You Got" As usual ROB SQUAD "great reaction" and song as usual.

I was so fortunate to attend Curtis Mayfield's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was inducted twice, once with The Impressions (1991) and as a solo artist in 1999, that is the one I was at. One of the smoothest voices ever.

This is actually not Curtis singing; this is William DeVaughn. But the Curtis record cover that is displayed during this song has great tracks that you should listen to: If There Is A Hell Below…, Move On Up, We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue. Then there are Superfly, Get Down, Gypsy Woman, People Get Ready (with The Impressions) and…

I reported the video featured in this reaction years ago and it's still on KZbin (with comments turned off on account of so many folk pointing out the inaccuracies). It really needs to be pulled down. I love Curtis Mayfield and wish you guys would react to some of his solo work and also his work with the Impressions. Credit where credit is due. This is William Devaughn all the way, written, performed and produced.

Curtis didn't do it, it's by William DeVaughn. "Just Be Thankful For What You Got" is the correct title. The original KZbin poster made the mistake over 10 years ago, and it's never been corrected.

The song is actually called Be Thankful For What You Got and this isn’t Curtis Mayfield singing it. “2021) "Be Thankful for What You Got" is a soul song written and first performed by William DeVaughn. The record sold nearly two million copies on its release in spring of 1974, reaching #1 on the U.S. R&B charts and #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In 2021, it was listed at No. 374 on Rolling Stone's "Top 500 Greatest Songs of All Time".

Wow, haven't heard this since I was a kid. Sounds as good today as I remember it back then. My two older brothers were teens in the 70's. One played bass in a funk band. I'm almost sure I remember them covering this. Other brother had a big vinyl record collection with lots of songs like this he played all the time. So, what started out for me as background music, looking back, was actually a big part of my upbringing.

Jimi Hendrix sights Curtis's guitar playing as a major influence on him as far as chording and fills. Thats Curtis on guitar, Jay as well as his singing. A Master. Check out The Impression for early Curtis. Tragically he got paralyzed when a lighting rig blew over and landed on him. He was a fighter though! RIP Curtis Mayfield. On August 13, 1990, Mayfield became paralyzed from the neck down after stage lighting equipment fell on him while he was being introduced at an outdoor concert at Wingate Field in Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York Afterwards, though he was unable to play the guitar, he continued to compose and sing, which he found he could do by lying down and letting gravity pull down on his chest and lungs. 1996's New World Order was recorded in this way, with vocals sometimes recorded in lines at a time.
