Hi Everyone. On a memorable Friday, we watched in awe as the vibrant processions wound their way through the streets, each one a stunning display of tradition and community spirit. Grateful for the opportunity, we eagerly participated by creating our own intricate carpet for the procession, a labor of love that added our personal touch to the event. After the festivities, we indulged in a delightful meal at a beautiful garden restaurant, where the serene surroundings and delicious food provided the perfect end to a remarkable day. As a Catholic, I would like to explain how we understand and practice the use of religious images. Firstly, it's important to recognize that the prohibition in Exodus 20:4 against making "graven images" was directed against idolatry, the worship of images as gods. The context of the commandment is to prevent the Israelites from falling into the idolatrous practices of their neighbors who worshipped images as deities. Catholics do not worship images. Instead, we use them as visual aids to deepen our faith and devotion. The images of Christ, the saints, and other religious icons are meant to remind us of the divine truths they represent. They help us to contemplate the mysteries of our faith and to honor the individuals depicted, not the material objects themselves. Furthermore, the use of religious images has a strong biblical foundation. For example, God commanded the making of the Ark of the Covenant with its cherubim (Exodus 25:18-22). Similarly, the bronze serpent made by Moses (Numbers 21:8-9) was an image that God instructed to be created and used for healing. In the New Testament, Jesus Christ, as the visible image of the invisible God (Colossians 1:15), sanctifies the use of physical representations in worship. By becoming incarnate, God took on a visible form, which allows for the use of images to honor His presence and actions in the world. WE WORSHIP GOD ALONE and we show veneration to saints and their images. I hope this helps clarify why we, as Catholics, use religious images in our devotions. Our focus remains on worshipping God and using these images as tools to bring us closer to Him.

If you look closer to what the masks are, you can actually see that they are painted animals you can see the trunks and the tusks of the elephants, and the painted black-and-white stripes of the zebras. And we spoke to the guy at the coffee bar and he actually said they are more African style masks….
