Also, i'm pretty sure he didn't breathe much in while driving as it heated up and fell off during the initial start and warmup test. Also, if you manage to get car exhaust *inside* your car while driving, a small amount of lead vapor is the least of your problems.

Tungsten pistons would not do as well, naming wise, cos "Lead Pistons" would make a great name for a 1990s style indie/alternative rock band, or maybe "Tin Pistons". However, tungsten pistons would probably be more durable, as tungsten has a melting point of 3400C and is used in the durable alloy, tungsten carbide. :) Disclaimer: Not a musician or scientist.

I reckon, having watched it all, that #3 or #4 piston would make a great mould for a mega high compression piston made out of a sensible material. Do that @Garage54, make a mega high compression piston set from what you've learned! That, my friends, is the appliance of science!

I actually predicted that just cranking it would start wearing out the pin bores and cause contact. You can see they immediately bent an intake valve, hence the combustion pressure coming out the carb on every cycle. Either I was right or they had bent valves already.

You can always get a close enough timing without running the engine. Just line up the rotor with where it would be pointing to No. 1. Then line up the mark on the front pulley with the timing mark. Turn on the engine and slowly rotate the distributor until you see the points separate and create a tiny bit of spark. That will ensure the Lada will start and there won't be any guessing i.e. twisting the distributor trying to get it to start.

What about steel pistons? Start with a large diameter steel tube and weld a cover over the end and put a smaller diameter tube through the side for the gudgeon pin. Add a brace to the inner ends of that tube. No need for any metal casting. These might actually have a chance of lasting for a reasonable time.

Tin and antimony... zinc and lead don't play well together, even a few parts per million of zinc will destroy a lead casting alloy for use. I fully expected these would fail by pounding out the wrist pin bore, it seems Vlad expected this as well. Did not really expect to see the piston end up tapered like it was, or pounded into the shape of the combustion chambers.Certainly didn't expect this to end up a high mileage engine, but I figure. it would last long enough for a few drives down the street. BTW, how do you refer to a high mileage vehicle in countries that do not use miles?

The fact that this nail gun even turned over with questionably precise pistons 5 times the weight of the original Design is a testament to Lada. I'm pretty sure the lead did heat up from the metal contact alone. Causing the easy deformation. Lead is soft as is, the low melting point does not help. The heft probably threw the chunk of cylinder against the valves then causing the imprint. Poor little engine.

I have a idea, Who ever likes it, spam it so they can do it next. Try to make all the internals al light as possible to make a usable high revving engine. Light crank, light conrods, light pistons, light flywheel. Even light camshaft. It should rev like crazy especially with ported heads and some exhaust branches

Crazy video. I love these crazy experiments you guys do! Those crankcase fumes / exhaust is definitely something I would not recommend breathing in! Lead oxide is extremely toxic.

That lada Starter is a Beast. It sounds like it was running 300 RPMs Trying to get that thing to start. They must be oversized for those russian winters.

Meanwhile in the US they are trying to remove lead from ammunition due to health and environmental crap. Garage 54 is melting, machining, and handling huge chunks with their bare hands. Real men.

If your definition of a real man is to play with a toxic metal, not knowing that it's going to turn you into a Madman, you have an odd view as to what a real man is

Zvent I have been following you for practically your first videos I ❤ you😅 experiments some of which are very interesting and informative eg the home made fuel injection , the 6 cylinder Lada engine , the diesel converted Lada engine, the petrol converted Toyota diesel engine and the centrifugal clutch on the Lada engine. By the way that 2 cylinder Lada engine you made did not work properly due to you not putting the wire in there correct place sorry 1 opposite the other not next, retry. Zvent did you ever try making bronze or phosphore bronze engine bearings, that would be interesting to see Regards to you all. George

Try making a cylinder head gasket from cereal boxes . someone I know made one for a single cylinder air cooled engine and it worked for ages ,

you guys should try putting 3 or 4 radiators on to a car, the idea would be to basically cool the engine so much that it can't reach operting temperature, therfore the engine would run cold all the time, and see what happens.
