The place where you met the elephant in Thailand was like a pet elephant and he may have been part of that elephant show, but in Pinnawala, the elephants were sick, injured, isolated from the herd, isolated, the elephant's whose parents died. Like that 🙂

I think the most identical you and Mac is your reaction when you see the elephant. I want to remind you that it is not good to stick your head and hands out when you are in the car. Little elephants are cute, big elephants are a little scary, anyway, I think they should have been trained. I think those elephants do like Harry , and I believe you had a great time that day, thanks for sharing!

@@chamindadecosta3970 Sri Lankan elephants are really tame, even to Thailand, I would not recommend any contact, In fact, in recent years, Thailand has not encouraged any activities of feeding and riding, and it is only open to a few people to bathe the elephants as a charity fundraiser!

This place is basically like a hospital for elephants. Elephants which were injured before in the jungle were carried to this place and taken care of them until they become recovered. Then release back to jungle again. In Thailand those elephants are basically trained for entertainment.

These sort of places can be a bit of a worry but must say those nellyphants seemed quite happy and well looked after. I would certainly like to visit there. Thanx for showing us around.

these aren't pet elephants. this is an orphanage for elephants that have been isolated or injured. If the elephants are healthy enough they free them to wild after assessing them. even after them are freed they ll be monitored

yeah, ideally they should be in the wild. But this the elephant orphanage, these are all rescues. Most of them were orphaned due to human activities, some were disabled during the war (due to land mines), so they just have a life here. As you saw, only one elephant had chains, it could be coz he was in season. They tend to get aggressive when in season. There is Udawalawe where they reintroduce elephants to the wild.
@ow13762 жыл бұрын
Harry Raj is spot on. Elephants that can be rehabilitated are reintroduced to the wild. They are taken to the Udawalawe transit home and is gradually reintroduced to the wild.Hence these are semi wild elephants. It’s only if they cannot be reintroduced, they are kept here. There’s a massive team involved with vets etc here. This is run by the government and not operated purely as a tourist attraction. The main aim is to care for these animals. Hence the lack of information etc. During feeding times, public can pay and buy tickets to feed the baby elephants with milk or some adult elephants with baskets of fruit. Obviously, those tickets sell out fast. They measure the amount that’s fed to each animal in order to ensure they aren’t overfed. They also have a programme where foreigners can come, live there and volunteer for a month or so.

Btw the elephants found in the orphanage are all orphan elephants or ones born to those elephants. Some are also injured elephants from the wild. Now the sanctuary takes care of those elephants.

As I know, the elephants you can let roam free and touched and fed by tourists in such tourist attractions are trained to do that. While these elephants in Srilankan elephant orphanage are the ones brought to the place under various circumstances, whenever these elephants can’t survive in the wild. So they are not trained and can be old, sick, in heat or can be violent. These are two different situations.
