We moved the Staircase!! (and I really screwed up 😬)

The layout of this house when we bought it was a bit wonky. With the stairway in the middle of the house it really blocked the lake view for most of the downstairs. Plus it made the layout upstairs not very efficient. Since we are completely gutting this house I figured we mide as well frame out some new walls and move the staircase to create a more open and effective layout. To move the stairs we had to put new floor joists in place to span across the existing floor opening. Then we had to cut out the new opening and install double trimmer joists, double headers and joist hangers. With the opening in place we could then cut the stair stringers and get the stairs installed.
With all that done we could move on to tackling the upstairs which included demo, framing and the start of plumbing.

I’ve been a carpenter for over 40yrs as I watched you try to explain the stringers layout I noticed you forgot about the thickness of the top tread . I tried to yell at my screen but I guess you didn’t hear me ha ha . But you reacted like a pro….when you make a mistake fix it. I guarantee you won’t make that same mistake again ever. Good work!!!!

Cheers to you guys for grinding out the stairs and fixing them after you noticed the top tread being too shallow! AND your wife being there helping! That's a lot of work.

So very informative and easy to understand; did you know you were going to have to do all this when you bought the place? Is there an exterior door on that level? Yikes, so so much work for you guys. Job well done with more to come.

Fantastic video. I'd loved seeing all the construction changes. The moving of the staircase was excellent. You have very good skills. I wish my basement was taller. I had to subscribe to your channel so I can see future changes. Loved everything!!!

Stair stringers are so easy to screw up. Lots of details to keep track of. Especially the first time you do it. In other news, around 22:10 when you take down the last piece of framing on the interior wall it looks like the ceiling settled ever so slightly.

It’s called sistering not a trimmer! Trimmers are in a rough opening to a door ! This is an absolutely frightening video! Someone will buy that house down the road and hv no idea this was not done by a licensed contractor! You are messing with structural items and hv no experience! Would you diagnose yourself medically no! Permits? Inspections ? I am a finish contractor and never buy a home if the home owner did the work ! Nightmare after nightmare !
@rogueengineer
@rogueengineer 5 ай бұрын
Sistering meaning refers to the process of reinforcing or adding extra material to strengthen a damaged material, typically floor joists. A trimmer joist is a beam in a floor or roof structure attached to truncated joists in order to leave an opening for a staircase. What makes you think I have no experience? And yes this project is permitted and will be inspected. Did you see the part where we lifted the whole house! I bet that really blew your mind 😂

@@rogueengineer so your a GC and build homes ? I apologize not an engineer ? Listen you can give me the specific I call it sistering because all the rough outs of the doors receive trimmers ! Ask any experienced carpenter what it’s called I don’t care what your dictionary explanation is ! Thru out the video you state “ this thing or that thing “. Or “ whatever” ! I am really glad you hv a great degree ! That does not make you a GC ! And for a guy like me who has fixed and looked at plus purchased many homes these are the ones I avoid ! And by the way it’s not that difficult to lift a home ! However; to me if I learned the home was lifted I pass! Anyway good luck you obviously know what you are doing !

The large window with lake view is pointless. You put up the walls of the linen closet block it from all sorts of views. Sure, it will allow some natural light at the top of the stairs, but who cares if you cannot sit and enjoy the view from the window. SMH.
@rogueengineer
@rogueengineer 5 ай бұрын
It's a hallway and staircase. Not really somewhere you would sit to enjoy the view but definitely need some natural light and why not make it a view of the lake from the top of the stairs. plus the position of the window is offset so that you aren't looking right at the neighbors house. It will make more sense when you see it done.
