I think you got the message wrong. This isn't saying "every human sucks and everybody harms the forest! There's no hope for us and the world is going to turn into a desolate wasteland where the last fox mother got shot my a mean, mean human!" I think this is saying exactly what you think it should. It's saying that some humans suck, and you should fully realize the impact of your actions, because if you don't and the forest are cut down, the sky may become a sickly gray, the air might become toxic, floods might overtake the land, and the last fox mother may be shot and killed by a a starving, desperate person. This is a warning that if we do not open our eyes, the light will disappear, not that we can't open our eyes, and the light is already gone.

I think that is a great take! I think I just get frustrated with messages that hit hard on the narrative of deeply hitting your emotions... which is a really successful story!!! ... but don't go that extra step too guide people to ways to prevent all this. To me, pointing out a direction we could all work towards and things we could do to make ACTAL change in the world is the most vital part of showing you care AND actually will DO something about it by pointing people on what to do right *now.* To stop short at an emotional hit but then NOT go any further... frustrates me. You get the audience invested... but then leave it up to them to have to do ALL the legwork to learn how they could change things...?? The truth is... if you don't take people to that next real step then you only benefited yourself, not real change in the world, and that makes me sad. So many people are led astray by thinking water bottles and recycling (which, alas, is mostly a scam in most areas or just takes trash to dump in other countries) is doing enough... when the real answer is deep, systematic change that requires voting, pushing to change lifestyle norms, building a country that holds those in power to high standards and pushing hard again and again for transparency and accountability from larger companies or powers who will do everything to push you back, downplay the seriousness, and keep you ignorant about the real cost of what you are being sold. If... we don't point people in those directions nothing will change. And to use emotional distress to kinda make half a message... but not own up to taking a stand to point people in that direction...?? It... really only benefits you and not the environment and world you claim to love. That is just... what makes me sad. People will watch this, be upset, know in the back of their minds "Huh, I should do something..." ... but if you don't help them to figure out what to do for REAL change... they will seek to erase their discomfort 99% of the time with the lowest hanging fruit - which are often misdirected messages like "eco-friendly" products that have no regulation to prove their claims, cagefree eggs that are still from horrifically cruel environments, water bottles made out of plastic that poisons you and the water supply, recycling in communities that sell their waste to be dumped - not repurposed - rather than holding the manufacturing companies to the fire with fierce voting, etc.

@@seripixelbiologist That comment makes me feel better about my long comments, but I read all of it, and I agree! It's sad that companies put up fake green flags to surround their red ones, and mislead people who are just trying to make a change! I think this game would be so much better if it showed people living alongside the forest, or winning against Care Corp, or helping the endangered forest creatures (by taking the fox cubs and badgers in to restore the species, or something of the like), but I don't think that the message it sends is a bad one either. When the mother fox gets her head stuck in a bag, it's saying "Hey, pollution is bad! Be careful what you throw out!", and notice how when you passed the refugee camp, there were signs all over the place? Those people were protesting, as we should. By showing the Furrier chase you with an axe, and how scary that was, it's telling everyone not to support poachers, or to give them other things to do. At the same time, it's telling you that to save the world, we can't ONLY care for the forest. We have to help the people, too. 99.99% of people want to do good, the question is whether or not they can. I'm so happy to see someone with some of the same interests and concerns as me! I loved the series, and thank you for making it! Me and my family are making a video game, and I was wondering what you'd want to see in a nature-oriented game? (The main character is a ferret, and that's unnegotiable! XD (Also, thank you for reading this far!) For anyone reading this: I want you to know that the world will lie to you over and over and over again. What you need to do to avoid falling into the traps of misinformation is this (among other things): Fact-check, and doubt your beliefs. Check your sources to make sure they're not fake. I also want you to know that recycling doesn't really work, not much can actually be composted, and trash will go to landfills if it's not sent to the ocean. What you can do, though, is push for better recycling options and more compostable packaging, and fund organizations that clean things from the ocean. There is hope, but you have to open yours eyes if you want to see it. :)

The reality is most can't afford (I'm talking time and money here.) To make changes more than those "low hanging fruit" I think the game is illustrating the fact that those who are already in poverty are the ones who are affected most and soonest by the global issues of food scarcity, over population, climate change ECT. And yet are usually the ones more proactive environmentalists (with time and money) blame for our planet continuing to struggle. companies should be held accountable and the game is definitely saying that very loudly. Companies must make big changes in how they operate to decrease their effects on the planet and make it easier for people who aren't well off to make changes. And to create jobs that better peoples lives. The chicken factory in the game is so on point with this. Those kinds of factories are terrible for their workers health, the local air quality, and the planet. It's very intentional they used a chicken factory and showed all the "villains" in the game as having Thier reasons for trying to kill the foxes. I think the game is being very explicit in the change that needs to happen. Companies held accountable as they make the largest negative impact on the planet and people's health. But also for individuals to be good to their neighbors, fight for what's right not just for your own kin. It also gives small hints like the comment above said about things like pollution in water ways, litter, pouching, deforestation. Those little tide bits about individual ownership are meant to empower the individual to action while not detracting from the true issue at hand being companies and system wide change. The message is larger than what one person can change in their lives. I think the game giving a list of things someone can do to avoid this extreme outcome for the planet isn't what the message is about. The idea that if everyone would just do this or just do that, we could have a healthy planet and a brighter future isn't realistic when most of those narratives are pushed by the very companies that don't want to make changes themselves. I think the reason the message isn't brighter in the end is because individuals ARE willing to change. It's companies that aren't and that is why futures like the game suggest are possible and are happening on smaller scales already

Hey, Seri, not-so-fun fact: It was the furrier who killed the scavenger. Maybe you missed it, but when you went back to where the scavenger had been grieving over his daughter to investigate the event and found him dead, the ax in his chest was the one the furrier always had when he chased you. The rifle the furrier shot you with was the scavenger's.

MY ending AFTER the ending: The small brown cub whimpered at his mothers side, feeling empty, and sad, and angry. He looked over at his brothers, realizing that Tod would suffer the most. He realized that Tod didn't know how to live in the wild, and would live the most trauma. After all, he had only just gotten back to their mother.... now that was gone. But as he curled up next to his mother, a ray of sun made him squint his eyes. He looked up at the now clear sky, then around him at the leafy green forest. A rabbit hopped into a hole in the ground, and he could hear a mouse scuffling in a bush. Only now did he realize how hungry, how tired, how sick, even, he felt. But as he looked at his surroundings, he realized that this wasn't the end, it was the beginning. This was what their mother died for, how could they not make the most of it? He lifted his tiny head, basking in the warmth of a new life. He glanced at the badger his mother had befriended. She could help them, they could all look after each other. He would always remember his mom, but he would also remember his mothers hope, and with remembering that, he sprouted his own hope. A small seed that slowly bloomed into a flower. A flower of hope.

I feel like you guys ( at least in the last 16 comments that’s here ) don’t really get the point that Seri is trying to point out, we really have to hope, and even though it’s sad, and even if it’s a video game, there’s still a message of hope that I hope some of us can take out of this 13 minute episode.
@seripixelbiologist2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I actually really dislike the "message" of the game, if there was one. It seemed to more focus on tormenting the player into feeling bad, destroying all the good kind things in the world, and yet... gave us no solid basis for how these things happened. It alluded to pollution, "evil corporations," deforestation, nuclear fallout, mass slaughter in agricultural factories, weirdly unhinged furriers (what good would fur be in that type of world?? I doubt "money" is a concept anymore, if things are so far gone), trapping animals (the mother badger has a scar from a noose-trap), etc... But there was no why. No establishment of, "Greed can take us this far." No explanation of, "Those who don't think animals can suffer put them into factories to exploit, slaughter, and eat without being honest about the consequences." No link between "corporation whose only goal is profit and growth for the sake of money and stakeholders" and "unregulated factories due to corrupt lobbyists and poor voter turnout." So in the end, I feel like Endling let us down, not because it was sad, but because it failed to connect the many sad things that it displayed (with beautiful graphics, I absolutely will give it that) to the very real human decisions and choices made each day by us right now... because there was never a single solid "why" behind all the sad things. So how can we have hope, or know what to change to prevent such a sad time, if the story only exploited the sad, but didn't establish a fuller narrative? How can we leave the player off with such a sad story to tear at their hearts and pat ourselves on the back for warning people how bad things could become and calling it a message... if we're just left at that? "Humans can be bad, things can be this bad!" is a poor message. "People don't think about their chicken nuggets and canned soda at lunch or where those things come from. They are too busy or tired to make voting in their local and federal elections a priority and think there is no point, so they don't bother. Lobbyists are able to slip in bills that remove protections on the environment and dress it up as economic growth because people don't want to question why they can't have lawns in a desert or get a tax break for a new factory setting up shop on the local river." That is a fuller, real narrative of where these sad things in Endling come from. That gives us a place to start seeing where the hard, sad problems come from - and a place to dig our feet in and make changes to our lives and the structures of our societies so that things like this didn't happen. But to just leave us with the specter of "humans bad, things sad, boo feel sad" feels exploitative and disappointed me immensely. We CAN make things better, even if better will never mean "fixed" or "best outcome" at this rate. But it means - like I said - looking ourselves in the mirror and being honest to the point of making painful changes about our own individual lives... and pushing relentlessly for changes on a broader scale, too. And if we feel too and futile, too lost and confused about how these things keep happening, so what can we bother doing about it...? Then we'll never have that moment in the mirror when we say, "This is awful - and I don't want to give up the things that make me comfortable, I don't want to do that hard thing... but I know I should, so I'm going to do it."

For me, the ending was perfect. Had to be cruel cause real life is not disney movie where animals sings songs and all are happy. This game had to be a hard slap to the face, a wake up call. There were good people - like Molly, or the lady that was singing song. But the truth is, people are abusing nature. Overkilling, using resorces without replenishing. Im not saying that all people are bad, but the reality check is easily found in the news. And yes, I know, I said real life is not like Disney... But I will finish with wise words of a Willow Tree "The ripples So small at first, then look how they grow. But someone has to start them."

I feel like there is still a small sense of hope, even at the end. There’s still a forest for the cubs to call home for now, and they have the mama badger to take care of them. And we saw earlier that despite everything, there are still kind people- Molly took care of our cub and helped us whenever she could, there was a nice lady with a guitar who fed us a few times, and even the Scavenger came around eventually- yes, all of the kind people we met died, but if this were real then I feel like it’d dishonor them to say hope for humanity is lost now that they’re gone. I do wish that there was a bigger sense of hope at the end, that it wouldn’t leave players with such a desolate feeling, but despite everything that’s happened I think if you look closely not everything is lost just yet. If it was, then we probably would’ve watched the entire fox family die in that desert, or we wouldn’t have seen anymore humans left traveling to find a new home. “As long as there is life, there is hope”- that’s always something I try to believe, even when it’s hard. I guess it depends on how you look at it- Sure, you COULD take away that all hope is lost from the ending- but I guess from my perspective, I’d want to try and hold on to hope, even if that hope is so small you have to squint to see it. I wouldn’t want the kind humans who offered us food and comfort, the mother fox who gave everything to protect her children- to have died with their efforts being in vain. I guess that’s just my takeaway from this :’D I wish we saw at least one kind human make it to the end, I feel like that would’ve been a better way to leave players with a sense of hope, but overall I think the ending is up to interpretation. Maybe it’s to show us how the world will become if we don’t act, or maybe we can try to scrounge up the smallest ounce of hope we can find in the ending- I wouldn’t say any interpretation is wrong. Whether you’re content or dissatisfied with the ending, I feel like it stills leaves players with a feeling of “I don’t want things to end up this way”. I do agree that even if I personally still find hope in the ending, I still feel like there could’ve been a slightly “louder” way to convey that to players and not risk making them think that no matter what we do this is all that’s left for our world. Perhaps I’m just optimistic and trying to heal from the ending in my own way XD Either way this adventure was an emotional rollercoaster and both the game’s ending and Seri’s words gave gave me a lot to think about, and I’m so excited for the next one!

(Spoilers!) This ending was heart-breaking, Mama fox AND the baby Badger! NOO!! But just like you said Seri, I feel like it was presented in a way that just didn’t feel right. It definitely makes sense why they ended it like this, but I feel like it focused more on “If we let this become our reality, bad things will happen” instead of focusing on the fact that, yes, this can become our reality, but we need to have hope that people just like Molly can help make the world a much better place to live in bit by bit, even if it takes time to finally see a difference. A fun ending I thought of would be if a girl just like Molly would walk towards the Mama fox after getting through the gate, and help heal her wounds (or maybe even heal whatever was wrong with the baby Badger!) with a medicine kit. For me, even though this ending is a happy ending, and not an ending where it truly pulls at the players heart strings, it still shows that even though it looks bad now, as long as there are still kind people, we should have hope that we can make the world a better place one step at a time. But those are just my thoughts:) Thanks Seri for another great video!

I heard it too. My theory (based on micrometric-thin elements) is that a nuclear accident caused the wildfire in the beginning (or maybe vice versa). People were told to evacuate their home near the power plant, hence the refugee camp. And told to take iodine pills which could be the medecine the scavenger stole. As well as wearing gas masks because of the fallout. The radioactive contamination rendered water undrinkable and led to a huge humanitarian crisis. However I don't know how to include the factory or the flood in that plot. (the flood could have triggered the nuclear accident but I am not convinced).

I watched this video second time now, and I cry so hard. Maybe the most people don't cry if they just watched this episode but if you watched from beginning until this it is so hard to take. Especially when you are sentimental like I am. (Sorry if my English isn't so good, I am from Germany.)

You've done a wondeful job as a storyteller and thank you for your input, messeges and pointing out that hope is the most important thing! Perhaps Endling should have a sequel in order to give their enganging plot a brighter future!

Second! I just finished watching the video and it's so sad😢 The true villain of this story was the furrier, in the end he did eventually get us he just never knew it. This is a very sad way to end but at least you know your cubs are going to survive. I think the devolpers will make a part 2 or ending because they kinda ended on a cliffhanger and people will get curious about what happens to the cubs is it just a loop because where you ended looks like where you started. But well done for completing endling Seri💕and amazing content all the time. Thank you for that🙃❤️

this made me cry so much because its how the world can end up. I dont want to think its all poisoned, your one of my biggest inspirations, i want to help animals and be the best i can, but its always so hard, ive seen others around me tear apart, and become far more broken than i am, and i try to be the hope they lost, and keep my own strong enough to keep others holding themselves up. this story broke my heart, but the way i see it is the fact the pups survive, that there is still hope, even when part of it falters, there will always be more to find.

I do agree with you that hope is what we need. Last year I hit one of my lowest points I almost completely gave up because of my fear for the world. The shootings and violence and the fact I am a minority female, but I know now that the world can get better I know that not everybody is bad. Thank you for being an amazing KZbinr Seri you're one of the people who does give me hope.

It’s sad to see this series end, it was an amazing series, but that was one heck of a story! I was honestly expecting that ending but it’s still emotional, you can actually see the emotion in the badger’s eyes when the fox you play as starts dying and it just SHATTERS my soul, it hurts that it has to end this way especially since I’m emotionally attached to all the animals here, but Seri’s commentary just pulls me into the story, but how’s y’all’s day? Need a quick break from this emotional end? I’m here for ya if you wanna talk about anything✨

@golden_burns27732 жыл бұрын
When i finished my play through this hame had me crying for 10 minutes straight. Bruh the Furrier- why in the name of god would you continue trying to kill ONE fox just going on with it's daily life after everything you worked for and own is washed away. You would think he would take the time off to recover from the damage but NOOOOO, apparently getting fox fur is way more important than making sure you have supplies and a temporary place to stay after a FLOOD
@zodiachimera75572 жыл бұрын
Furrier's a greedy bitter man, and the foxes became a personal target of his after a point I think - either when the Scavenger went back on the deal to sell the one he & his daughter were keeping, or after Scavenger almost shot him while trying to steal said fox cub. It's not about money anymore by the end - their continued existence is a slight and he just wants to finally GET them like he did the Scavenger.

@@seripixelbiologist I feel the same, at first when i saw all the skins and furs he has hanging up at his house I thought to myself "oh, maybe he just does this for a hobby." The end of it made me cry. And your words are so true. I hope we can make it through this hardship of a world. And we can all live to see a better future. One where we can thrive. I know it's wishful thinking but that's my hope. This world really can't be better. We may try and try, but it never truly will be better. There's bad in the world, yes. But good is still a thing. We never know when this world will end. Tomorrow is a hop, never a promise. Life is short and so very precious, and I hope you all make the best of yours.

You know this almost reminds me of a book I read. It was a story about a mouse named Poppy, making a porcupine friend, defeating an enemy owl, defeating a beaver group, then falling in love (best part of book) and so on. Well, it was in what I believe was the third book following the porcupine and finding and raising fox kits after finding the mother die in front of him. The porcupine was all grumpy and was spouting out negative things in life, but he does have a good spirit and towards the end when he was about to leave them with their father, the foxes didn't like their father since by nature I believe he just tends to leave for the great woods. Instead, they follow the porcupine to where he originally lives with his mouse friend Poppy, who is married and has a big family now and show great love and devotion that her friend has return with a new family of his own. You should really read it; it was really generally sweet. Seeing how this ended reminded me how this ended, the badger now watches over her kits.

I never thought i would get so attached to the mother. Im proud of the mother though, even though there were terrible people she put her trust into the ones that were good and tried her hardest with the sense of hope that her cubs/kits will make it out alive even if it took her life. Thats the power of a mother, she even still tried to walk after she got injured. The badger was also a mother, you could see that even though she was aggressive at the start, she was only trying to feed or take care of her own. I dislike that it pulled at your heart strings but in all honesty it still gave a message. I see the message as that a mother would do anything to protect her children even if it costed her life. I could see that there was another thing as well, when the Scavenger took the pup and after awhile of this his child was taken from him too. Its a slight pattern, i still may not understand all of the messages in this game but i saw what i could see :) I also may have shed more than a few tears.
