@@sumitino It's not slow, it's actually quite quick. However, you might struggle in low-light situations, and it'll depend on which camera body you use. I find that my A1 and FX3 have significantly harder time tracking onto subjects compared to my a7C II. The A7C II and A7RV have significantly better AF and thus the 90mm DG DN behaves better on the a7C II than using a combo like the 35mm f1.4 GM on the A1.

I too love tiny lens! The biggest challenge with focal lengths less than 50mm (i.e 16-40 mm) is keeping good sharpness with minimal barrel distortion, which is introduced with shorter barrel lengths. There are compact lens out there but many need that extra barrel length and diameter to control distortion. Case in point is the Sony 20mm, G, f1.8 and the 24mm, f1.4, GM. These lenses are renown for having no to almost no distortion but achieve it with longer barrel lengths and larger diameter. The Sigma, 17mm, F4, DG DN (1:49) and Sony, 24mm, f2.8, G are tiny and compact but notoriously have Mad barrel distortion without lens corrections. These lenses are designed to work with the cameras lens correction feature to return a “truer” image , but does it at the expense of stretching and reducing sharpness in the corners of an image, (some won’t find this important, some will). I considered buying both these lenses but couldn’t get past the distortion and at least for the 24mm opted for the larger 24mm, F1.4, GM. For that setup at 0:33, I went with the Non pocketable one!

Great video! 3:35 I own the Sigma 90mm, f2.8, DG,DN and it is an engineering marvel in my opinion how something that small and compact can give the kind of reach and sharpness across the frame that it offers. With lens corrections off there is pin cushion distortion but that goes away completely with no loss in quality at all when turned on. It is a marvelous lens with it’s clicky aperture ring and AF/MF button. It has a lot going for it and everything it offers bends the senses. Really happy with this lens.

The Tamron primes are also super small and super light. Their focus won't be the fastest or quietest but they have really good image quality and can do 1:2 macro photos. Their 35mm offering has a very similar lens hood to the one you were describing as well, where you can attach a filter to the end of it.

Yes definitely need more smaller lenses. My favourite lens for my first camera was the Panasonic 20mm F/1.7 (40mm equiv) on the Olympus OMD EM10. It was a great travel combo. And the Oly 45mm F/1.8 (90mm equiv) was stellar. Wish we could get similar for FF. My favourite with Sony has been the A6000 with the underrated FE 28mm F2 (equiv 42mm) as a nearly pocketable walk around combo.

How about the Samyang 75mm 1.8 as an alternative to the 85mm? My setup is an A7C with the Samyang 18mm 2.8, 35mm 1.8 and the 75mm 1.8 all packed in the Peak Design 3l Sling. The 35mm and 75mm are great lenses, the 18mm is not bad but not great. But ultrawide I shoot the least, so it’s ok for me. @user-yg8hn4it3c There are some who say the sharpness and distortion control of the Samyang 24mm, f1.8 rivals that of the Sony, 24mm, f1.4, GM, and achieves this at more than half the cost and in a smaller form factor & weight. I was considering picking this one up as a second, more compact, cheaper 24mm but I had some concerns with the lack of weather/dust sealing, losing the better IBIS in handheld video that comes with using native Sony lenses, and Samyang is not known for having the best quality control out there from user feedback reviews. Still, the apple looks enticing.

I have a Used, Like New A7C on the way to me. The declining price on the used market vs the value was just too attractive to pass up. I am considering getting the tiny, Sony, 40mm, f2.5, G, as a proxy for a 35mm to pair with it. It'll be just 5 mm tighter framing than a 35mm and I'll get all that wonderful build quality, clicky dials, and compactness. My only concern is I already have the Sony, 50mm, 2.5, G and 40mm seems really close to that. How does your 40mm compare to a 35mm or a 50mm?
@MeDroiD Жыл бұрын
Hey! It is exactly as you describe. 35mm is too close to 40mm and at the same time 40mm and 50mm sit quite closely too. I think that’s exactly why I love the 40mm. Almost identical to the 35, and easy to replicate the 50 with such a minor crop. 40mm to my eyes sits at the perfect spot to become the single lens to use!

But as much as I've been loving the X100V, I wish it did better in low light because I love doing street photography at night. The α1 is just a tad too big (because of the hump), the ZV-E1 "could" be used for street photography but 12MP is too little if I need to crop. I have until tomorrow to decide if I should get an α7CR or α7C II because of a Sony deal... What do you think? Just stick with what I've already got?

Another pocketable wide angle lens is the new Viltrox 20mm f/2.8 AF. It's currently available for Sony E-mount. It's 65 x 59.5 mm, and weighs 5.5 oz. 52mm filter thread. Image quality is pretty good, especially for a $158 full-frame autofocus lens. Lately, I've been using it more than my Sigma 24mm f/1.4 Art lens. The Samyang 75mm f/1.8 is just 65 x 69 mm and only 8.11 oz. At $289.95, it's pretty budget-friendly. @DustinAbbottTWI is a fan of the lens, for its image quality. It's not an 85mm f/1.4 G-master, but at less than a third of the weight and a fifth of the cost of the GM, it's a lot easier on both your back and your budget. Pair the Viltrox and Samyang with a Sony a7C II or a7CR, and you're still under 2 pounds.

Looks cheap, far from G body, but works years like new, mine seems particularly unkillable ;) People like metal lenses like that small Sigma line, but once you bump it enough, some plastic flex is what I want. Next their 24/1.8 from the same Tiny line, if one doesn't need the GM, this one is the 24 to get. I don't like that the Sigma 17 is f/4, the Samyang has nice enough 18/2.8 at 145g and there's new very cheap Viltrox 20/2.8 and Tamron 20/2.8 is also fine. And Sony 11/1.8 aps-c is so small and sharp, still often better to shoot with that cropped at 16mm than f/4 ff. And it covers like 1.2x crop of ff too, great for wide hand held FF vlogging with active stabilization and around 1.1x crop on that. Also Samyang 75/1.8 is worth mentioning, by far smallest short 1.8 tele at 230g, almost pocketable '85'.

Ngl I’d be down for this to bring pocket lenses. All I need to do is “downgrade” my IV to the A7cii and I’m set lol.

Just got the viltrox 20mm 2.8 myself. For the size and price i paid ($152) , it's a no brainer. Cheap and small enough for me to put it on my a7iii and bring it everywhere.

Don't you think 20mm is too wide for everyday use? Even in APSC mode, it will be 30mm and still too wide, I think. For me perfect everyday focal length is somewhere between 35mm to 45mm (FF equivalent). I also have this lens and am thinking about sending it back. I paid $145 during Black Friday.

The filter diameter for these lenses are 49mm, but the glass is what? - 12mm?

I didn’t bring it with me on this trip but we used it quite extensively last summer into this past spring and it was great!

Sigma already has a 65mm f/2 compact lens, which is insanely sharp and much better IQ than their 90mm f/2.8. I have Sonys 24 and 40 G lenses, but I still prefer using mostly the 24mm f/1.4 GM lens on my A7CII. Both as 24mm and in APS-C mode as 36mm f/2’ish. I really miss an 85mm compact lens from Sony and I’m fine with a 85mm f/2.5 ultra compact prime G C’mon Sony 🙏🏼😍

@UfukSahinDenmark The Sigma 65mm, f2, seems like the sharpest thing out there from all the clinical test websites and KZbin reviews I've seen. I'm really thinking hard about adding this one. Still, for me after a certain level of sharpness, your just showing off as degrees sharpness become indistinguishable to my eye. Still this seems like quite a lens that I wouldn't mind owning.

Is that a compact lens in your pocket or are you glad to see me?
