One of things that has impressed me as a Canucks fan is the work ethic. Rick Tocchet has this team working hard on every shift. The structure defensively has been very good for the most part. The accountability Rick Tocchet has brought has also been nice to see as well. Demko and DeSmith have both been very good as well.

When you start with Demko-Hughes-Pettersson, that's goalie-top defenseman-elite center, that's how you build Stanley Cup winners. It's hard to get all three. Teams that get all 3 end up winning championships. Now you have to fill in the rest.

@@RRaquellothey had all 3 of those guys for the last 4 years. The additions of Hronek this year and Kusmenko last year are a huge difference but the biggest credit goes to the coaching so far. First of all look at the Canucks coaching staff. Rick Tocchet, Adam Foote, Mike Yeo, Ian Clark. Sergei Gonchar. A who’s who of the hockey world. He’s got the team breaking out with ease compared to years past being hemmed in our own zone. They’ve always had the offensive ability but defensively top to bottom this is a completely different team and that’s because every single player is buying in to the Rick Tocchet system. Also putting Myers on the 3rd pairing has been such a great decision, he’s playing less minutes and just look at last game, he was incredibly impactful. This is the best he’s looked in a Canucks uniform and he’s due for a career resurgence. Full credit to coach once again.

He's very difficult to place because he's not your conventional skilled player. His skating, checking, shooting and passing are quantifiably good but everything he does has a unique feel. No one else moves quite like him. You can tell some players are bigger, stronger, faster and have better hands but he just uses his body and space differently that is subtly elusive and opens up unique opportunities. Also that shot is unreasonably sick.

The thing about EP40 that many 'experts' seem to forget is that he is a great defensive player as well. He's been a plus player throughout his career on top of putting up good to great numbers. He will always be in contention for the Selke at the very least. Both EP40 & Miller who is also in the top 10 is scoring are over +5 with the only other top 10 being Pastrnak. As for your question. Being on the west coast doesn't help getting much exposure to the majority of the eastern media who do most of the year end voting. Heck even the Sedin's & Naslund took awhile for them to get the recognition they deserved. Being in the playoffs will certainly help EP40 gain more exposure but being on a bad Canucks team for so long wasn't ideal.

Elias Pettersson is easily a Top 10 player in the League. I remember people laughed at me for saying that over the summer. Man, this is the kid Gretzky himself said he sees himself in during his 2018-19 rookie campaign when he set an NHL record for scoring in each of his first 10 NHL games. Reminds me so much of Datsyuk but I think with a much higher ceiling.

Buffalo fan here, yeah, Petterson is a scary good player. Top ten is a given, top five a maybe. He's also capable of playing a defensive game. Probably hasn't reached his peak yet, which is scary to think of. He is a gemstone. I am also glad we don't play him all that often. Fun to watch, though. Oozes quality. One thing I don't see mentioned that often with EP40 is his stick when he doesn't have the puck. His two way game seems to fly under the radar, but his ability to pick off passes and create turnovers is nothing to thumb your nose at.

For fans too young to have seen Gretzky play, Pettersson is the most Gretzky-like player since Gretzky. Not to say he's as good as Gretzky was or that he's the best player since Gretzky, but when you watch him and how he plays he looks like Gretzky and plays the game the same way. That's pretty high praise. From the first time I saw him when he was a rookie I had him tagged as a top-5 player in the league. Maybe because I'm a Flames fan and first time I saw him it was against the Flames and he just lit them up and made them look like amateurs. And he was a 19 year old rookie at the time. This guy's worth whatever you pay him.

This team has one big thing over last year, defensive competency. The Canucks didn't struggle to get goals when they started the last season, they often had leads over the other team, but would then give it up or take it to OT and lose. This year we're seeing a similar proficiency at goal scoring, while also significantly improving defence allowing us to hold our leads and expand them when we start getting momentum

He should get top three or at least top five votes for Hart, Selke, and the Lady Byng + Ted Lindsey. Really incredible to watch him initiate checks as well as getting so good at the reverse hit and being smart enough to anticipate and absorb hits without getting wrecked. Definitely got a chip on his shoulder and motivated to move the conversation from *Holy saint McDavid* being the anointed one. He’s put up with so much drama, management change, coaches, team & linemates, etc. in his first few years and think once he sees some stability with the teams management and consistency with teammates, he’s going to flourish even more.

canucks have truly landed jackpots with a very small time gap between 2 legit number 1 centers from henrik to EP, although EP is 100% vastly more talented. the canucks have the backbone in place for a legit, LONG-TERM perennial contender. EP/ Miller is a C tandem you can roll with for at least half a decade. Hughes can be a full decade. Tocchet and demko are both legit in what they do. Man, if they figure out the cap situation, we may be witnessing the beginning of another golden era of Canucks hockey. I much prefer EP / miller to the sedin style. It was unique, and most certainly had their moments, but these guys hit too, and have a hostile streak to them that is a must for me in hockey players that both sedins lacked. Enjoy the ride folks. back to an era of competing with the best and destroying the trash.

Let's not forget the addition of his physical game. He's adding body checking on top of his reverse hit. The physical play was always my gripe with the sedins. Now he's tough to play against and lays the weight into players on both sides of the ice. He's going for the Selke now that Bergeron has vacated the throne.

I am a Canucks fan and I resist the urge to get too bullish on EP40. I always pegged him as a Datsyuk-type. Amazing hockey IQ and two-way play and of course a lot of offensive flair. I am not sure I see him as a perennial top 5 scorer, but like Pavel, a top 10 guy for sure. But who knows, maybe this is really what he is and I won't complain. Whether he gets 100 pts again or 125 he is one of the most lethal all around forwards in the NHL and he will drive the bus on this team for years if they wise up and give him the 8X$12M he is showing himself to be worth right now.

Dude can do it all. He's a maesto on offense(tied for 1st in points), but he's also incredible on the backcheck (he's a +9 at the moment). He's a killer on the PP, but he's also one of the best 5 on 5 players in the league(one of the league leaders in even strength points last season). Only "weakness" he really has is his lack of explosiveness and speed, but it really doesn't seen to matter because he thinks the game better than most. Glad he's a Canuck, hope he stays for the long haul. I feel like we're on the right track in that direction.

Nice to see a Canadian team doing well (knock on wood). At this point (Ottawa resident/fan) I dont care who does well, ill cheer for any Canadian team lol. Its been over 30 years since a Canadian team won the cup lol. For a league made up of nearly 50% Canadian players, it feels like that shouldnt be a thing. Hell, I havent seen a Canadian team win the cup in my life lol.....The Oilers are fumbling McDavids career despite having a top 5 player alongside him, Toronto......well we all know how Torontos season is going to end, Montreal is in the dumps, Calgary cant figure their own sh** out, Vancouver has been a dumpsterfire since they made the Finals (maybe theyre scared to out together a good team cuz the city cant handle another riot if they lose), Winipeg feels like a team that will bounce between the lottery and being competitive but never good enough to actually make a Finals run ,and Ottawa can't seem to get out of their own way screwing themselves over time and time again. I get what Tocchet is doing drawing attention to areas of his player's game that he thinks could be improved - that's his job as coach - but in Petterrson's case I doubt there is anything he can say that Elias hasn't already said to himself. He is the #1 priority of the opposing defense so of course he gets checked off the puck and has some passes picked off, but you can also make the case that he is one of the best defensive forwards in the league - you could make a long video of highlights just showing his back-checking and intercepting opposing passes often leading to Vancouver breakaways or quality scoring chances.

I watched him at the young stars game before his career began, and I'm happy to be wrong. I saw the shot, and some patience and creativity, but I was unimpressed with his speed and size. I figured NHL players would erase his skill set with ease and that the Canucks had wasted a first round pick again. If Pettersson isn't a top 5 player in the league, he's certainly a top 5 center. Obviously McDavid is 1, and MacKinnon is 2, that much is clear, but behind him there's a group of players I'd say are pretty close to each other, and they are Matthews, Draisaitl, Jack Hughes and Elias Pettersson. Behind that it gets really murky, a mix of Zibanejad, Aho, Crosby, Barkov, etc. Players who are definitely elite, but at this point aren't quite in that upper upper echelon of centers. But yeah, I'd consider Petey probably ahead of Matthews and on the same level as Jack Hughes, who's a bit more dominant offensively, but not as good all-around as Petey. Past centers, there are a couple of defensemen and wingers that could be in the convo. Guys like Pastrnak, Makar, and Fox, but I'd argue Petey is at least equal to all of them
