I have a solution: If you know your gig or jam will be filled with a room of snobs, simply tape about 15 hundred dollar bills on that Jet's headstock. Or better yet just totally outplay everyone on your Jet. Few things are more fun than smoking some guy on stage who is playing a 3000$ axe and a boutique amp.

I have 3 Jet Guitars. 2 Teles and one Strat. They are the best modding platform I've found. The bridge on the Teles actually isn't compensated, but I replaced it on both of them with a Wilkinson compensated brass saddle top loading bridge. That intonates pretty well. The Teles are routed for any type of neck pickup. I put a Curtis Novak regular neck and fat bridge set in one tele with a Gunstreet harness, A Monty's P90 in the neck and a Porter 9T in the bridge and Mojotone solderless harness in the other Tele and Fralin Steelpole 43s in the neck and middle and a Fralin Pure PAF in the bridge of the Strat with a Gunstreet treble bleed harness with 500k volume and 250k tone with vitamin T capacitor. The nut and tuners were fine on all three and the tremolo was fine on the strat. I bought them all for 229 bucks each on Amazon. I can't say enough good stuff about them especially after leveling, crowning, and polishing the frets. The only real downside is that the fretwire is not very tall, so there won't be the fret life you would get from spending another 100 bucks.

I bought a JT300 and it's incredible. I had my hands on the JT300 and the TE62 from Harley Benton and the Jet sounded more neutral stock and the neck was magical. Few mods I've done - got a 6 brass saddle bridge, put two graph tech string trees on (the break angle over the nut is poor and causes string rattle and decreased sustain), upgraded the electronics with dual coil pickups and a 4 way wiring for in series. The tuners are mushy but they'll do the job.

I've got 3 Jet guitars SSS Strat, HSS Strat and the Tele with the humbucker at the neck. All three played brilliantly out of the box. I changed the SSS Start pickups for Fender Texas Specials (which cost more than the guitar) and I'm changing the HSS Strat pickups for Alnico 5 pups and a new wiring loom. The tele didn't need anything done to it. I would recommend to any guitarist who hasn't got one to get at least two.

Purchased a JS300 11 months ago. Out of the box the nut wasn't glued at all, but the shipper made it right (had it fixed). Stock this guitar is solid. I installed an after-market pickguard with Lollar mid/neck and a Tim Shaw hum bridge and you'd think maybe that's overkill, but even stock it is great. It's a keeper for me, for when I get old and broke, I won't feel badly keeping this excellent guitar.

I’ve been feeling the call of a budget T type for a while that I can have for noodling on the sofa and leave out and no worry about kids/pets etc messing it up. Jet have such a stellar reputation from reviewers and those baked maple necks look incredible so they were top of my list but the lack of through body stinging is a deal breaker for me on a Tele. I might go down another tier and try the ultra budget Eastcoast T1 to scratch that T type itch and get an S type from Jet (those necks man, I need one in my life 😂). Awesome tones and playing as ever John!

Owned the Jet jazzmaster for about 15 months now, and it's awesome. There are some quibbles, of course, but there are quibbles on guitars that I own double the price. The neck is fantastic, the fretwork was stunningly good for a guitar under £300, it looks great, the tuners and bridge are actually half decent. Only complaints is that the nut slots are a touch high (only by a few mms, if that) and the pickups are kind of mid. But that's hardly the end of the world, and those are things you can change. The fundamental instrument itself is great. I bought it at my local guitar shop, so I've played a bunch of the Jet strats and teles as well and they all outperform their price. I'm sure there's a dud here and there, but man, the stuff you can get for under £300 these days is crazy.

I think that this is an absolutely fair review of Jet Guitars. On my channel, I review their S Type. I expected it to be awful at the price, but tried one at a trade show, loved it, then they sent me one to take a closer look at. I found the S Type tuning stability to be surprisingly good and the playability so good that it would be the guitar I would grab over that of another S Type that was loaned to me at the same time that was double the price. At worst the pickups would need upgrading down the road, but that is subjective. As beginner guitars, the cheaper Jets will be great and they offer a great platform for upgrading. Great review! Thanks !
@johnnathancordy
@johnnathancordy Ай бұрын
I've only found one issue - need to update - basically the pickups at gig volume are microphonic, so I think those might be more important to upgrade than I was initially thinking, but even with that upgraded, it's still a lot of guitar for the money!!

I recently acquired a jet js400 and must admit that it has one of the most comfortable necks I’ve ever played. The pickups on their lower models, like the 300,400 and through to the 500 models, I believe, have ceramic pickups, which can be a little microphonic, but as you demonstrate,sound really good. Sire guitars feel like an upmarket version of the Jet range, particularly when comparing the S7 models, but as you mention, they are well over twice the price. The one thing I must admit though, is that the quality of the guitars on offer £ for£ these days, far exceeds anything that was available, 10,20,30, or even 40 years ago!. Please keep up the good work with your no nonsense reviews and amazing dexterity, GB

I spent months trying out T-styles at less than £1000, including Claasic Vibes, Fender Players, an FGN, a Fret King, a Sire T3, and a Jet JT350. I still haven't found anything I prefer to the Jet. Its neck is gorgeous, it sounds good. It feels like a straightahead tele, without any fancy bits. Because of its cost I've not been afraid of modding it. For sure, the quality varies. I tried out 3. One of them was a bit of a lemon, the other two were fine, but the paint finish on one of them wasn't the best. My one was good out of the box but had a bit of fret buzz. Again, because of the cost, I did my first ever fret level on it and this fixed the buzz. With regards intonation, that's par for the course for Teles. I've fitted compensated saddles and intonation is fine. So you can definitely get a great guitar, but it's worth trying out a few. (I did also try out the cheaper JT-300 and it was just as good, just a different selection of colours and no string through bridge.)

I just bought a JS400 for my nephew who is starting on guitar. I was really impressed with how good the Jet is and how well set up out of the box. But still I did some work to it: polished the frets, set the intonation, action, pickup heights and now is pretty awesome for the price paid. The only thing that really ‘needed’ work was the intonation but that is fairly easy to fix.

I bought the JT-350 with a neck humbucker in black to get something affordable, yet nice looking to put into a baritone tuning for now. It was on sale for 325€. The finish had some scratches on the front but I believe they'll go away if polished properly, not very deep or anything. The neck feels amazing, fret work was better than on a couple Fenders I have (both MIM), tuners do the job, but don't feel that great. The electronics are functional, but the tone pot is useless unless you only need it at either 0 or 10, because there barely is anything going on in-between. The pickups give you a very usable sound which did need some EQ to get more out of them. Volume pot works fine, no idea what value they are though. Bridge single-coil felt a bit shrill even compared to my Jaguars with 1meg pots and stock pickups in the other, Novak Lipsticks in the other. Bridge is very solid (Wilkinson 6-saddle T-type). The biggest thing for me was actually the nut. It was cut nearly perfectly and was able to fit 10-46 strings with no binding whatsoever. Action at the nut was right where I'd want it anyway, so that was nice. I hate having to take a new guitar to a shop to get the nut filed since there's often too much height going on and/or thicker strings just won't fit. The guitar sustains nicely and you can feel it resonate throughout the entire neck and body. The neck had issues with relief and the allen key was a tad too small for it, but after some time I carefully just managed to add some relief and hopefully I won't need to adjust later again since I'm scared of stripping the trussrod nut... I sent them an email about this and they did respond so hopefully that's getting sorted. All I'm looking to upgrade is at the very least the pots and the switch. After that I'll see if the pickups come alive or not. Tuners can stay since they do their job and the guitar stays in tune even better than my Fenders. I would recommend these for people of any skill level and anyone that is looking for a guitar for an alternate tuning or just as a backup guitar. The fact that they don't require that much upgrades or anything is even better, because it's so easy to suddenly have spent 300€ on upgrades without even realizing it, almost doubling the cost. Last thing: There is an issue with break angle over the nut on the G string for me. Most likely caused by the locking tuners that barely have space to add more winds around the post, compared to regular vintage style tuners which have plenty of space there. The string rattles when played open but I just added a hairtie behind the nut to mute that. Probably needs a string tree to make it sit better in there though.

I've had my two for two and half years. The JS400 was perfect out of the box, even the floating trem. The JT300 needed a tweak of the truss rod. The necks seem to play themselves. Nuts cut well. The JS400 developed fret sprout this winter but I'm not storing them well. I havent had to adjust the truss rods as the seasons change. I played a JS300 in an Athens music shop to try out some amps. That guitar felt and played extremely well. So JET are doing a good job on QC. (All lefties fwiw.)

@@tgarder Absolutely. I think this JS400 and an Epiphone Les Paul Special are the only guitars I've bought new (sight unseen) that have been perfectly setup. Every other instrument has needed a setup and sometimes some repair work - it takes a lot for me to send a guitar back. I've been most unlucky with G&L Tributes - which is a shame because the components parts are quite good. So hats off to JET.

It's true, putting in a little extra to these lower-end guitars that have good bones you can get a happy guitar. After being dissappointed with a Squier CV Deluxe (great neck, faulty wiring) I got a Harley Benton TE-62, for about £160 too. And like that Jet, it was actually suprisingly damn decent stock. I preferred the Squier CV neck, but HB was more solid. So, I spend about £240 on it. Neck prewired harness, Tonerider vintage pickups, brass compensated saddles, Gotoh tuners, bone nut and a setup. Now it works really well as my second Tele, after my Vintera Vintage Modified It's more clean, bright, light and shimmery than the Vintera 60s modified, sounding a bit more the Sire T series. But I like that it sits higher in the mix, more of a country/funk sounding Tele than a rock Tele. I also just got a Sire L7 Goldtop, as my second LP-style, and it's really lovely - nearly flawless and plays so well. I like the sound of my Les Paul Special better, but I think that's down to the difference between P90s and Humbuckers. The Sire neck actually plays better than the Gibson, and that's not to disparage the Gibson. The Sire tuners are better too.

Hi John, video was very informative. Perhaps a request on a follow up video. I live in the part of the world where these guitars or a lot of brands aren't available instore. We're basically down to what's in the shop. Mainly cheap knock off brands you've never heard of. Or overpriced top tier PRS guitars and other brands. What credible resources can one trust when you can't play or test the guitar? It's usually more affordable to import most guitars than buy them instore (cause they are overpriced like crazy). Perhaps pointers on these, and I actually had a thought in mind why don't these stores just charge an extra fee to do a setup on guitars before they are sent out to customers? Better to have something playable. I know it's a mouth full but hopefully someone here can comment on this. Thanks

I had a Jet js400 strat and returned it due to body imperfection. I paid $350 and it was ok, in my opinion, it is comparable to a similarly priced Squier strat.

I have a Jet JS-400 which I bought 2-3 years ago. Unfortunatelly, mine was on that 50% bad ods side. I had to work a bit on that thing to make it playable (high action, fret buz, etc). I also upgraded the electronics (pickups, pots, etc). Still not happy with it. I would say that for the money I paid is acceptable.

Never usually buy mail order guitars but the Jet JS 400 was very playable straight out of the box, finish and frets almost as good as my Fender and Gibson, yes of course the pickups, tuners etc won't quite be as good, but what do you expect for £169 !

Have had a JS400 for a few weeks now and find it amazing value for money, and won't be changing anything on it. It can't match my Gibson LP std, but that cost ten times more. I also have a Fender Tele US std, but Jet are making some great guitars, and I'll be buying another one !

I've got the same pink Jet Tele. Already had Gibson Les Paul and Japanese Strat (60's aged parts). I sent the first Jet back because I couldn't intonate it. Replacement is better. My saddles are not compensated. I tried some cheap compensated saddles and still wasn't totally happy so bought a new, cheapish bridge with individual saddles. But it's difficult to find such a thing with a top loader Tele and these ones aren't stable, so i'm going to put back the original bridge and try the compensated saddles again. Might have to figure how to do the pliers technique on the screws. But I've never really understood how that works if you turn the screw at all. I've never really liked the look of Teles but do like this one.

I found with the brass saddles 'compensated' by one flat face, that I was getting 'sitaring' on the strings that played over the curved side. My solution was to file those three 'open' curves flat: just leaving a normal 'land' on those saddles.
@KozmykJ
@KozmykJ Ай бұрын
People won't Always get 'sitaring' on those curves, it depends on the critical angle which is going to vary from guitar to guitar.

I hope this video helps me sell my Jet JS400 :D I love it, but with the music my band plays, I find little use for a 6-string and would rather use the money to get an 8-string.

Its always disappointing to hear of more expensive guitars having QC issues eg Re your Suhr story. I had to send a MIJ Fender back due to its QC issues ( string buzzing etc) although I was often informed that Japan has sone of the best quality control in their guitar factories. Tremendous intro playing btw.

I have the js400, i bought it to see if the hype was real and it was. It played as good as my fender player strat with less issues out of the box, specially the frets, the ones on the player strat where a mess when i bought it and had to level and polish them.

What should we take away from this? 1) KZbin reviews cannot be trusted. 2) Try guitars in shops, and buy based on your experience. 3) Do as John says, and invest in guitars that are a couple of price points up from the bottom. The Jet guitar does look really good, but I'd still buy one from a shop and not sight-unseen.

I guess in the UK etc we can use returns if there are issues....Can't go wrong in a shop if you can try a few!

Agreed to a point. So many guitars are written off for a subpar "out of the box" setup, but absolutely anything on a guitar can be fixed. It's important for players to learn how to do simple setups - set action, adjust the truss rod, set intonation, etc. It's so easy and can transform a guitar in a matter of minutes. It's not really possible to try every brand of guitar in a shop.

@@maxpeck4154 You need to assess whether a guitar either needs a few tweaks (I agree, we should all be able to do that), or requires more complex work like having frets re-seated; something I've seen with brand new, expensive guitars and which is completely unacceptable, hence rejecting any such guitars.

The Jet guitar sounded very good. It looks like more budget guitar makers are learning how to make good Pickups. With the affordability of CAD and CNC, manufacturing good, consistent quality budget guitars is becoming the norm.

My dirt bike friends are all fantastic mechanics. My guitar friends honestly do not even own a set of nut files or the knowledge to use them. I have been a regional repair tech for multiple guitar brands, off and on for decades. I am not sure why so few guitarists invest some energy into things that matter. I have shredder friends who can sweep pick like Paul Gilbert but couldn't strum Happy Birthday in BFlat even if I told em it was a I, V, I, IV progression. I have friends who cant play a simple 12 bar blues without missing the changes but can play an Eric Johnson solo perfectly. They seem to not understand the full role of what a guitarist is and does.

With the sponsored video that didn’t come to fruition, I’d offer the company just the jam part of the video to publish on their socials. I wouldn’t consider that an endorsement as it’s not on your channel, but it would still be of immense value to the company as you can make any instrument sound great. I think it’s a decent compromise…

I ve got a js300 in gold for like 160 quid. I play it more odten than my fender. Dont know why, i love both, but the neck just makes me grab it more often. Also it had no uogrades and no trips to my luthier. Just some intonation and trussrodd adjustments i did myself. Jet guitars are just too good, and not just for the price point. My fender neck pickup costs more than my jet guitar. Lol.
