Disagree on the mother son point, i literally cried for that kindness of that old woman several times, especially when she was left alone in game 3. And the son was taken with the others. The son is miserable, yes, thats the point. No matter how much of a miserable loser you are, your mother will love you type of shit hit me pretty hard.

I agree with your comment 100%. I think Geum Ja was there to be the glue of the pseudo-family unit they had, and connected their unit to Gi-hun's unit via Jung-Bae and the pregnant girl. She gave the show the kind of heart only a good maternal role can give. Also if Squid Games were real, there's probably going to be a handful of moms there just because they want to help their (adult) kids out

I thought the tone of the music didn’t match the nature of the relationship, I felt the emotions they wanted us to feel for them weren’t consistent with the writing presented I thought both of them came off as an enabling duo of each others worst tendencies, rather than a beautiful portrayal of parenthood, Think toxic boy mom rather than healthy mother son relationship But the whimsical music felt incongruent with that

@brownsugar7922 4 күн бұрын
@@marshallstannus I mean it's your video and your opinion, but Geum-Ja doesn't seem like a toxic boy mom AT ALL. It's not like she thinks her son is too good for anyone or anything. In fact she keeps berating him for his dumbassery. Also she wasn't a maternal figure to just her kid. She was being maternal to a lot of other characters.

I think you made some valid criticisms, but I liked the amount of characters we got. I think if anything the biggest problem is the editing. If this could have been stretched into 8 or 9 episodes I think a lot of the criticism would be alleviated.

I felt like season 1 was Gi-Hun as a player of the game, but season 2 was Gi-Hun against the game, which turned into a new kind of game about the game. 001 represented the side of the game, the side that says people are bad at their core and thus worthless, and Gi-Hun represented the side of 'good', that you can't brutally kill people even if they sign up for it. The real game was not the challenges, but this silent battle between 456 and 001. The moment 001 won was not at the end, it was when Gi-Hun said it was worth it to sacrifice people on his team in order to do the uprising. You can see 001 reaction to it, and he instantly agrees to do the uprising, even though just before that he was advising Gi-Hun against provoking violence. Gi-Hun was already a kind of frontman of his own, he has his crew of soldiers, he sat in his control room overseeing everything from screens. And in the end, he also 'let' innocent players get killed in order to achieve his own goals. The fact that they didn't instantly kill him suggest to me that they just see Gi-Hun's crusade as part of the fun. Maybe it is something that happens more regularly, considering there must be a decent amount of winners. Like, you just went to some mystery island where you barely survived brutal horrible games and won like 30 million dollars, who wouldn't use some of that money to find out wtf that was. Like maybe that is the dark twist, that to win the game, to be able to even survive, you have to become the kind of monster that enjoys the games. Gi-Hun's righteous cause was just a front, it was actually more so about enjoying it, having something to live for, being good at something.

The only thing I'd say I would disagree with is how we know little about the characters so we can't have much emotional connections. But when you think about it, isn't that what it is with lots of gameshows. The Squid games are presented to be a sort of gameshow, purely for the entertainment of the people watching. But in reality, you know absolutely nothing about who you're rooting for. You won't know much about their background, who they are as a person, etc. So, you're only able to go off of how you see them on screen, possibly putting us as the viewer in the position of someone like the frontman who gets enjoyment out of watching these games despite the fact we know little to nothing about these characters.

I believe the bread/lottery scene was focused on examining the rough deal we get, and the gambles we must risk taking in the futile pursuit to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps. It's about the system -- complacent/comfortable (bread) or grinding/gambling (lottery), you're still stuck playing the game. Living within an ultimatum.

I haven't fginished the video but damn, it feels good to finally to someone not coming out of squid games thinking "ugh those poor and homeless people who are obsessed with money are disgusting!" Yes the games and the bread or lottery thing are cruel but they are not the root of the problem, they come from something even more cruel that we don't sea as clear because we are participating in it and don't want to own that. To me it always comes back to that quote : “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

I think the trap music version of fly me to the moon was to show that the game is different from the first time (playing normal fly me to the moon). gi-hun shook things up by showing that players can work together to get the guaranteed result of survival instead of gambling with every man for himself. front man then steps in when they learn the money increases with each dead player, and break the tie to slowly break down gi-hun’s hood of ending the game or changing humanity.

Great analysis!! I loved knowing 001 was the front man when 456 didn’t. Given the hints in season 1 that he may still have some humanity and hearing his backstory in 2, I was actually wondering and kind of hoping that forming bonds with the players would change his heart. This made the last scene even more heartbreaking for me. I disagree with you on the mingle game. I thought it was psychological torture to watch, seeing the decisions the players had to make about who to abandon. And the losers died with their last thought being that they were betrayed by people they trusted, like Ali in the marbles game. And the part with everyone being so happy 001 was ok after he got separated was sad knowing what was likely to come.

the first season still had a lot of characters they focus on, We just think there wasnt that many cause they focused on like 7 people out of all the charaters we focus on. I guess the main reason why we didnt get much focus on the new characters as there was never a moment that the game was going to stop. Since we didnt know anything about the squid game in season 1, we could have an episode where they stop the game and then going back in. They couldnt really have that again cause like if they did stop the game, the higher ups werent going to let gihun back in again. So the only option they could really do was they could have added another episode before episode 3 just learning more about the new characters we didnt meet prior, but I guess they didn't do it probably cause most of the people who probably watch season 1 for specifically the games and not the story. That's how saw that.

My main issue is the side characters kinda suck. I personally was rooting for the son and mother. Trans girl is also pretty likable. Thanos seems unrealistically cruel. Going from being a kinda douchebag rapper guy to a full blown murderer with not even the slightest pressure seems a bit of a stretch. Like he just kills all those people at the start for quite literally no reason at all. He’s not as convincing a villain as Jang (the gangster from season 1). The pregnant girl is a unique concept and I think it had the potential to be a good side plot. Would’ve liked if they added a bit more drama around her. The other side characters are all just generic people who I honestly didn’t give a shit about. They have no backstories or anything that connected in the way it did in season 1. They’re just there. The yelling guy and the spiritual girl were especially dull. Just nothing there at all. A plot choice I really don’t understand is the lowering of the stakes. The players in season 2 seem unrealistically cruel and unintelligent compared to the characters from season 1 and they don’t even have a reason for being that way. That’s part of the issue splitting the prize presents, there’s also the issue of constant voting. Just seems like a bad plot choice overall and doesn’t align with the philosophy of the frontman.

Honestly, as a way to expand on the mother and son, I would've expanded on the mother's love and her willingness to protect her sons and those around her, to the point where it kills her. If I had the chance, I would've had her sacrifice her life for her son, probably during mingle. Or I'd have another game similar to Marbles, where the players are forced to betray their friends, where a lot of important characters get expanded upon and then killed. Something similar to Ji-yeong (240) could happen.

I agreed with most of the points you raised. It’s surprising that it took nearly a decade for the writer and director to bring Squid Game to the screen in its first season. This long development process allowed him to hone the characters to their core essence. Considering that, it’s remarkable he managed to deliver functioning characters for the follow-up, even though they lack the same emotional depth and empathy as those in season one. However, I disagree with your view on leaving out the mother-and-son duo. Squid Game has a recurring theme of parenthood. In the first season, Gi-hun’s journey was rooted in his desire to become a better father for his daughter, while Oh Il-nam saw Gi-hun as a reflection of his own son, treating him as such throughout their interactions. In this season, the focus shifts from paternity to maternity, showcasing three women at different stages of motherhood. No-eul is searching for her missing daughter and shares a connection with Player 246’s daughter. Then there’s the mother-and-son relationship, which will likely lead to one of their deaths having a significant emotional impact in season three. Finally, there’s the pregnant woman. Her character seems poised to be a symbol of hope and renewal, whether she becomes the sole survivor or remains among the final players-especially if Jun-ho’s crew successfully infiltrates the island. Her unborn child adds a poignant layer to the narrative, embodying the possibility of new beginnings amidst the chaos.

Couldn't agree more with this video. There were a lot of scenes that would have been very emotional and impactful for me if they were in season 1 with season 1 characters. In this season I just... didn't really care about the characters because they didn't feel unique or well developed. Other then the trans girl, no character really has a interesting or unique motive and I think the unique motives and dreams of season 1 characters is part of what made them so interesting and what made viewers care about them so much. Part of the problem was definitely the weaker tone. The series as a whole felt a lot less serious once the games started due to constant montages and like you talked about, the overbearing music. It was interesting at first in the red light green light game when Gi Hun was trying to protect everyone and teach everyone about the game, but they sort of make Gi Hun give up on it once no one listens and then they cut to a montage. I also think removing the 011 plot, or re doing it, would have improved the season a lot. It wasted a lot of time to try and develop a character that just wasn't very interesting. I have a hard time relating to or caring about a character who's entire moral dilemma was "I have volunteered to shoot people for money, but I don't want to shoot someone who's a dad that has a sick daughter". Like, I don't know, I just found it hard to care about her at all? Like it's not exactly interesting, literally no one would want to do it. The thing they could have done to make the plot more interesting would be to just focus more on the system and internal corruption of the pink soldiers themself, as that has always been the interesting part of season 1 when there were pink soldier side characters in the organ trade. The problem with trying to make a fleshed out guard character is that I don't think you can really make their moral dilemmas or motives interesting, although maybe I'm not thinking creative enough?

To me, the ending was the worst part. Not the execution but just the plot. Gi-hun's "plan" was so stupid. The writers really had Gi-hun offer guns to the X team moments after they massacred the O's?? And where was the resistance to the uprising from people on either team who wanted their share of the money if they agreed to end the games? In what world was a shootout with an army a plan anyone would get behind?! Great performances and production from everyone but the story needed a lot more refinement IMO.
@Cameron_David_
@Cameron_David_ Күн бұрын
Agree that the side characters were not as strong but still worth the watch. The main issue was the justification for the uprising as there is no way the Xs would agree to sacrifice their own members or attack the guards and throw away the money when they still had a chance to win the vote. What should have happened is that during the brawl the Xs would see that they were losing way to many people to win the vote so their only hope of getting out was to play dead and surprise the guards.

Don't know if anyone's said this yet, but there's probably something to be said about how so many people didn't really care about keeping an immoral system (such as the Squid Games) in power as long as they (or I guess Gi-hun) were doing well...

I'm indifferent about 001 being known as The Frontman to the viewer. At best, it ignores the overused trope in TV and film where we get the twisting reveal at the end (ala season 1 with Old Man) But what's really hard to ignore is how Seong Gi-hun shows virtually no paranoia or even second-guessing about why participant 001 (for the 2nd time now!) is yet again the most intelligent guy in the room. Just a one-off "how did you know my name lol" is all we got which ended up being a forgettable throwaway line that should have at least foreshadowed further curiosity from Seong about 001's identity. It's also hard for me to ignore that after the Squid Games end in season 1, Seong Gi-hun is a badass mercenary with a take-no-prisoners attitude. And then in season 2, he's back in the games and immediately turns into this (slightly less) goofy guy that's still keen on making friends and building those friendships. Outside of 001/The Frontman, Seong Gi-hun knows the nature of the games better than anybody and he still comes off way too happy-go-lucky. Why does he come off more cold-hearted outside of the games versus inside of them?

I hope after season 3 they continue on in this world and do prequals.. i wanna see the start up of the games, the first games, the games that the front man won, more about the guards and their recruitment.. so many possibilities for spin offs

You make a lot of very good points which I agree with, however a couple of changes for the first two episodes: have Gi-Hyun hire two actual private investigators. From a logical perspective, why use a bunch of amateurs for something they are not qualified for? By extension it made Gi-Hyun look stupid when he had unlimited funds to hire a couple of pros. Secondly, have the Recruiter try to shoot Gu-Hyun at the last second only to be shot by the policeman. It was even set up by showing him pulling up at the Motel. They essentially gave the recruiter a good guy death, when he was established to be sick in the head

I resonated with how you mentioned there could have been a lot more with the side characters. A lot of K Dramas are very long with episodes being 1 hour and 20 minutes each, 10-16 episodes, and the whole cast gets a lot of screen time and character development. I think Squid Game took a more Western approach to a 40 minute show, which means a little less resolved storylines for the side characters. I’m sure the creators had the full stories in mind but had to keep it short. However, I think it’s all for the best as it’s a really entertaining show that the world has embraced!

On the subject on the number of characters...the whole cast is extremely famous so for those who know them its much easier to follow and care for them and their stories and was so much fun to watch. Season 2 in my opinion is just so much better than 1

there are three outcomes from the mother-son duo: (1) mother dies and the son fights with Gi-Hun to end the games again, (2) vice versa but the mom relives her Korean War and fights with Gi-Hun, or (2) Gi-Hun saves both of them at the expense of his own life because they remind him of Sang-woo and his mom

The homeless folk are no different than the players or the majority of society who sink their money in the lottery, at the horse races, or in casinos. Many people are intrigued by the thought of getting rich quickly. The voting process proves this point time and time again. I absolutely loved Season 1, and I enjoyed Season 2. The fact that the frontman jumped in to manipulate Gi Hun was genius. The crypto dude is the one to watch. The number on his invitation card to the games started with 456. The religious woman telling Gi Hun he was dragged there by evil spirits and that his destiny was tied to the pregnant girl (who is tied to the crypto dude) will be pivotal next season. I am looking forward to Season 3.

Idk about some of the takes i hear about front man. I heard one say he may want to win the games, but it seems pretty clear that he's only there to play Gi-hun & shatter the hero idea that he has. Think after he watched the first game & how gi-hun was trying to get some cohesion between the group front man just decided to play. Also, idk if it was just me, but it seemed like a slightly less serious vibe than it was in the first season. The first season wasn't exactly how you'd act if you were put in the same situation either, but season 1 seemed like a slightly more serious & ominous vibe. Maybe it was novelty Idk.

I really enjoyed your video and break down of scenes and how you felt about the pace and revelations as they came. The only thing I disagree with 100% is the second 'marine' guy. I don't believe he was a marine at all. I think he was a poser and people knew that which is why they laughed at him. He was someone who wanted to be accepted and would be whatever was popular or would bring him community. I remember him trying to fit in with someone prior to meeting the marine guy. Can't remember if it was thanos or not. So him shooting wildly during the takeover and not returning with the magazines just shows he was not a marine at all and was just a frightened kid. I could be wrong, but that was my take.

You're so right on the character development & the specific characters you named. The son & mother did nothing for me either way, I didn't really like or dislike them. I didn't really think their story was all that engaging. A lot of people seemed to like Thanos judging by comments in other vids. I was not one of those people. I thought the younger dude & girl in that crew that they were bullying were far more interesting characters & it kinda sucked how that ended up. The crypto bro had some character. I don't know if it was just that his acting seemed more plausible or what, but i got the same vibe about the crypto bro. The player 11 development was interesting. I think the front man stole that season for me. He was so good. Gi-hun is such a solid actor too.

I thought it made more sense the homeless people chose the lottery ticket over the bread. Cause if you do happen to win big via the lottery ticket you’re set for awhile versus ONE loaf of bread you can eat ONE day. The lottery ticket is a gamble. But if you win you’re better off than with one loaf of bread

Amazing analysis man. Don’t agree with everything but finally I feel like someone actually gets the show. Also the homeless people scene for me reflected the illusion of choice that is also given to the people participating in the squid game, like, it looks like it’s their fault for choosing to gamble and them being “greedy” but the main problem is not their “choice”, it’s about the system that let’s people with money and power play with those less fortunate. Thank you again for this video, great watch^^

Also, I truly liked Thanos’ character. I do agree with that this season was tonally a little scuffed but I felt like Thanos lifted the energy up in serious moments in a way that made sense. Like yeah, man is a drugged up celebrity who’s full of himself. It felt appropriate for him to be insane and the way he was. Not what I can say about the gangster guy who survived (I enjoyed his character too kinda but it felt so over done sometimes)

I disagree with the point about there being too much characters. 1. Gi-Hyun's goal is to save everybody from the Squid Game, so you're suppose to want multiple people to survive. 2. It elevates a lot of the X and O drama that happens all throughout the story. 3. The Pentathlon I feel was designed to make you care about multiple characters in one go as we see what their strengths and weaknesses ended up being.

Yes, the second half felt incredibly clunky and dragged on with the constant talk about voting. Also agreed on the characters, I cared about literally none of them as we didn’t see them in real life with their backs against the wall, they just seemed greedy not desperate. Honestly we just needed this to be Korean John Wick with him rejoining the games at the last episode or so.

I liked your video but the video of you was blurry. I loved S2, and I actually liked all the character buildups. It feels different than S1 because this time, you’re rooting for Gi-Hun to free them. I freakin loved the trans character! It’s the first time I’ve seen a lgbt+ character have a character that isn’t their identity, but also their identity was still important and necessary!
@LesterBrunt

But it wasn't the better choice, the lottery ticket might seem like it represents more money, but in the end none of them won anything, even though they all could've had free food. Even if they weren't starving, free food as a homeless person is a pretty big deal, so it is not like a choice between nothing and maybe something. It was a choice between not having to find food for the next couple of hours, or 1/100.000 chance of winning a little bit of money, of course you take the food, the lottery ticket has a near 100% chance of not giving you anything.

I think dae ho or whatever (“marine”) lied about being a marine. When the trans character is explaining how the guns work pay attention to his character bc he acts as if he has never used a gun before. He also wasted a lot of bullets shooting at nothing, someone who has military experience wouldn’t do that

because you dont need 001 to be the frontman to achieve the same result. question why sacrifice the few for the many? Yea anyone with a brain could have questiion that I questioned that as soon as he had the dumb plan and im not even in the games. Most of the dialogue could have been achieved with the frontman not in the games. I would have made someone else player 001 and have him be up close to with gi-hun and we the audience are like he can't be trusted but all along actually the front man now is the baby momma or the marine guy that was scared... oh shit player 001 this time isn't working for them its another player. It already looks like there are some other players that are also fronting. You still micro analyzed everything the frontman was doing when he was watching the red light green light game. To me its not that its bad he's in the game its that I find that it could have been done way better. And yea the voting was shot excessively. as for the homeless people I was like people are reading to much into social commentary because they want to seem intellectual but its like bro. One of the damn homeless man have soju lmao bro if they can have soju im sure they can eat bread from somewhere once in a while if anything that bread wouldn't help too much. Also, I'm sure them going days without eating then eating something then not eat again isn't new. At that moment the bread and lottery are pretty much the same thing. Prefer taking there chance maybe winning the lottery than the bread.
