In this video we're talking about the new Honda Prelude, and I am as shocked as you are that it is isn't another boring electric 5 door SUV.
What does this mean?
What is it, what's it got…
And is this the hero we've all been waiting for?

Sales count for everything, and Honda are a shadow of what they once were in the 90s and 2000s, so no. The Japanese are not storming the European market. The Ford Puma was the best selling car in the UK last year. If people didn’t want an SUV, why wasn’t it the Kia Ceed? Skoda Scala? Octavia? Golf?

I too LOVE a couple of their 'Family cars' (as well as my old 1995 Civic Coupe 1.5 LSi that I REALLY MISS). I had a 1988 (pop up headlight version) Integra 1.6 16EX (The 'Type R' of its day) - 1.6 Litre Cross flow head, PGM-Fi fuel injection, very comfy, focussed handling, and, when 'In the mood' she was rev happy all the way to the redline, the fact that she was in a luscious Ferrari type bright red too only helped 😏. Then, years later I went from a Mk 3 Ford Mondeo 1.8 LX (it in itself a very good car) to a Mk 5 Accord 1.8 iVTEC SE, full leather, and the gadgets/gizmos... DAMN! Even though the Mondeo was praised on its drive and handling, the Accord felt... 🤔 More honed. Still comfortable on rutted crappy roads, but, in the corners of fast sweepers/country lanes, the feed back was much better, and (lol) just dumping the air box in favour of a cool air intake, yeah... THAT 5,500 RPM became addictive! 😉🤣🤣🤣 There's NO doubt about it... Honda make some EXCELLENT cars! 👌 😎🇬🇧

Owned Honda's all my life starting with a 1987 Prelude I got when I was 16 that I put ~150k miles on. Moved on to a green/tan 97 Prelude that I put ~200k on (JDM H22 FTW), moved on from that to a 2002 S2000 and put another 150k on it (I like to drive ok lol). Then had to get a little more practical but refused to drive an automatic and drove from Vegas to Salt Lake to pick up a 2013 Accord Sport 6 speed that I have put 140k miles on, and still truckin'...so you know where I'm coming from. So far what little I've heard about the new Prelude makes it hard to get excited for, I have faith that Honda won't drop the ball, but we need some EXCITING news. As it stands I can really only see an Integra Type-S in my future, even though I'm not crazy about the looks and would prefer a coupe. But seriously, someone needs to light a fire under Honda's ass. Type SH, SH AWD, 9K redlines, VTEC, ARYTON SENNA....for the love of god please DO NOT make this yet another 200hp Prelude or I will lose my sh*t. Unless you can make it as fun as the S2000 was to drive then it may be forgivable but I know that ain't happening. The only reason I was hoping it would be all electric was that at least it might have killer acceleration and wouldn't be the same thing we've always had. Wasn't Toyota developing a manual-like shifting mechanism for an all electric sports car? Can we have some of that tech? How about some Tesla rocket thrusters? Obviously I'm joking but we need something to get excited about. If I wanted another 200hp Prelude I could have bought one 30 YEARS AGO. Sorry for the rant. Hopefully Honda can put some heart and soul into the new Prelude before it's too late. Otherwise it's just going to get the axe in a few years due to poor sales, yet again. BTW, the rear end design is simply gorgeous, I'm not all doom and gloom. The headlights still need to grow on me but being a previous 5th gen owner I'm used to that. 😂

Had a CRZ for years, that doesn't happen, they sometimes run out on a long straight with your foot flat to the floor, a few corners and a couple of brake zones and it's charged again, very clever things.

Are you talking about Honda hybrids or other brands? How about the CRZ?
@paulqueripel3493
@paulqueripel3493 23 күн бұрын
Not the way the Honda hybrid system works in this and the Civic. The petrol motor is always running when driving. It works the same way the old diesel electric locomotives did, the engine powers a generator that powers the electric motors, except at high speed when it connects directly to the wheels, no gearbox. This way the engine can run at its most efficient speed.
@celliott16
@celliott16 Ай бұрын
Take my money Honda 😍, if its anything like the older CRZ then even with only around 200hp, the torque boost of the electric low down will ebable it to punch well above it's weight were it counts, on the twisty stuff 👍🏻

Gorgeous car, but as long as it's just a larger Civic/Integra, I couldn't care less. Coupes for me should be RWD, I mean we already have plenty of FWD cars to choose from and the vast majority of them are SUVs, so why not go the extra mile for differentiating a car like this?
@jammy_rex3038
@jammy_rex3038 Ай бұрын
I think you are severely underestimating the cost needed to design and build a bespoke RWD platform for a niche market. Even Toyota arent prepared to go it alone and have to share a platform with BMW for the Supra for example. I'm just thankful that Honda are bringing a brilliant looking coupe back when most others are launching hideous looking electric SUVs. The Civic platform is class leading; superb handling and with the modifications to the Type R such as the wide track and some of the trick suspension, this Prelude is going to handle rather well indeed.

This new Prelude is yet more proof that car design peaked in the 1990s. They are basically producing something as close as possible to what they were offering in 1994.....and I LOVE IT! They're being a bit ambitious with the price mind you... how many young people can afford to finance a £40-50k car these days?

As a Honda fan and owner of many Honda models since I started driving 20 years ago, I am glad they are not following the norm and ruining the Prelude name, and instead making it a petrol coupe like the originals were, except I rather they make it fully petrol than make it a hybrid as the last one being the CR-Z had this set up and wasn’t that well received as people who buy these coupes want a decent petrol engine and a 5 speed box. Though I am not surprised by this as Honda has never followed the crowd and always strived to be different which is good. Big up Honda for not doing these silly touch screens, just improve the side profile as it looks a little odd. Honda need something sporty in their line up as it’s full of hatchbacks and SUVs currently so it’s a welcome return.

Honda’s e-HEV hybrid range is very good. I only have the 130hp 1.5 version in my HRV (and before that the 110hp 1.5 version in a Jazz) but I can attest that both cars are fun and responsive to drive, quick off the line, economical (average for me of 62mpg in the Jazz, 58 in the HRV) and they run off petrol in the normal way. (And being Hondas, perfect reliability). Given than even an HRV does 0-60 in 8.8 seconds, a 200hp 2 litre version in something as light as a Prelude should be in sub 5 second territory and all for a car of only just above average cost. Well done, Honda!

Sounds like what the Capri should have been... Turbo petrol engine and a small battery/motor(s). Short range on electric for those city drives or taking you to the main roads and then the engine kicks in. But a mad mode that gives both engine and battery power for rapid launches if that's your thing.
