Perhaps one of the reasons a very large segment of rational people in this country don't get involved in events like this is because it's very unlikely that you will reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into. Emotion fuels emotion and has a tendency to cloud logic. A protest is beyond the point of logical discussion. At the point of a protest, the teams have been chosen and the lines drawn. At the point of a protest, it's already a failure.

To those asking what's the difference between saying "white lives matter" and "black live matter" BLM was a movement that started to call attention to police shooting in America. It's not saying black lives matter more (it's not even saying the matter the same technically), it's just saying they matter and society was ignoring them and disenfranchising them. When it was coined, it has implied "too" at the end if that makes it easier to understand. As for the white lives matter. That only started as a way to take away from the BLM movement. Yes white lives matter, but that was never up for debate. It's effectively the same as me giving candy to one kid and not the other, the second kid is like "hey, can I want candy too" and I go on about "everyone needs candy, you don't need candy more than the first kid..." but never give them something as well. That being said, the statement "white lives matter" is not racist. Now for Charlottesville. They were saying "white lives matter" and promoting nazi iconography. Nazis are known for white supremacy, it's kind of their thing. They would say things like "taking our rights back" (from where? You never lost them. Someone getting rights doesn't strip you of yours. Rights are not in limited quantity). This all implies they weren't saying white lives matter too (as with BLM) but instead saying white lives matter MORE, their rights are more important than everyone's. This is their land and it's being "invaded". All those connotations is what makes theirs racist.

What I am genuinely scared of is that people get so involved in choosing sides and so consumed with the fear of being condemned as "unloyal", the things get so radical so fast that it spins out of control. During events like this, the outrage just deafens people. The world becomes black and white (not in terms of skin color, but in terms of contrast). People lose sight of gray areas completely, and it becomes impossible to reason with anyone. What we should train ourselves to do is keep a level head, look at the situation reasonably and not let ourselves get dragged down into an emotional madness, whatever side you're on. No matter how much things outrage you... if you lose your temper it will only get worse, nothing right can come out of that.

I completely agree. Political views should not incite violence. I personally think that all who were a part of the white nationalist protest with the intent of establishing white dominance over other ethnic groups are detestable, but the people from ANTIFA who attacked them were just as much in the wrong. It's never okay to use violence; it is morally wrong. It is especially bad because it causes polarization between one another. Some people on the left choose to only see that white supremacists killed an innocent woman in a riot. Some people on the right choose to only see that ANTIFA came and attacked people who until their arrival were peacefully protesting. Both sides are at fault, these violent actions will only cause people sitting on the fence to pick a side and join the fight, leading to more violence. Regardless of your political views, protests should be peaceful, and those who act in violence in behalf of their race, creed, or ethnicity should be seen as evil, by all sides.

People generally don't think about anyone but themselves. Most of us (myself included) will say they care about famine, poverty or whatever but in actual real life (not what we think should happen) most of us don't have or don't take the time to realy care about anything more then our immediate circles (family and friends). So that means everyone agrees with themselves in those circles and nothing realy changes. We only think about having enough money to get this or that. Which means we need to work more. When you work more you have less time and all that loop keeps happening. Very few people are capable of doing the right thing on a regular basis. Talking is the key but when you can't talk to people of different walks of life ... you get stuck in your ways unless you actively try not to.

This is disgusting to watch. But it's also sick to look at comments and see that people are diving us into groups, saying that it's the left's fault, or the right's fault. We have to come together, we can't be hateful towards people who believe the same beliefs as us. Political parties have become such a big part of us, that it paints the entire picture of someone from the moment you meet them. Not one liberal thinks the same as the other liberal, same with conservatives. We are all individuals! We can't be put into groups, that's not going to solve anything. Stop saying it's the other parties fault, the white peoples fault, the black peoples fault, Trump's fault. It's literally the Neo-Nazi, KKK members, and the white supremacists fault. Blame them. They're the ones causing the uproar and the mess.
@wassupdawg19777 жыл бұрын
I mean, i hate neo Nazis as much as the next guy, but isn't this anti-fa's fault primarily? I know this is stated a lot just in this comment section but this was a legitimate protest with official papers etc designating it as such, as far as i know anyway. Their views may be vile but they have every right to say them and the original protest was set up in a legitimate way so they had every right to be there. No violence would have occurred if Anti-fa didn't come to disrupt the protest surely? I mean, its pretty symbolic that the Nazi's, alt right and free speech people are usually the ones armed with shields to defend themselves while anti-fa have projectiles to instigate. And its happened time and time again, so you can't even argue that by bringing their shields and weapons the original protesters were looking for the fight, as recently a fight with anti-fa has been inevitable at right wing events of all kinds. I'm sorry, i know you started out your post saying not to lay blame based on group affiliation and differing opinion, but you then blame the wrong group probably because they have the more obviously vile opinion.
@samcombs91217 жыл бұрын
+Wassup Dawg No. They organizers showed up intending to be violent. They brought automatic weapons, armor and shields. These same people actually still want genocide. GENOCIDE IS A BAD THING AND ANYONE WHO INTENDS TO DO IT SHOULD BE STOPPED YOU FUCKING SHEEP. @wassupdawg19777 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and antifa came up to instigate a fight. For the last year, any right-wing event has been attacked by Anti-fa. At the start anti-fa were just beating on random people attending a lecture. As time progressed, more and more people on the right started bringing armor and helmets and shields and weapons to defend themselves. Most of those events had minor nazi presence as surprise surprise those with views people will suppress first will always congregate to the events proclaiming free speech, but that doesnt mean the other nazis are blind to what happens there. So when an event with a larger than usual neo-nazi presence (A group that are usually incredibly militant) gets attacked by anti-fa they will have more militant weapons. They bring this stuff to defend themselves because at this point it is provable that a well advertised right wing event will inevitably lead to a fight with anti fa who will be throwing cement filled bottles, bottles of piss, bats with nails, mini explosives and other thuggish weapons. To not bring things to defend yourself with would be to decide to be a sitting duck. The nazis views are retarded and evil, and yet they are the group who had legitimacy to their protest. Magically when anti-fa attacks an actual event where militant extremists are present and not some milo event, the reaction will be militant and extreme. If they didn't have anti-fa instigate the attack, they would have had nothing to attack back against. They would have had some vile people say some vile lectures, drank a few beers and gone home.

I am extremely saddened and angry at all of these bigoted individuals for their desecration of Robert E Lee and their misguided support of him. First off, let's be clear that Robert E Lee, while the general for the Confederate army, was in fact in agreement with Northern values and beliefs which is why he wished for the Union to stay intact and was offered a position by Abe Lincoln himself to take charge of the Union army. Lee obviously turned this down as he didn't wish to fight against his home state and was drawn in to serve as the Souths general. Robert E Lee was a wonderfully brilliant military tactician who sought to ease tensions before the Civil War and during Reconstruction. It's a shame he won't be remembered as such but instead as a martyr to be used by white supremacists and disgusting Neo Nazis to further their own agenda.

White nationalists, neo-nazis, and white supremacists also shouldn't claim him as part of their cause because I don't think if he were alive today would stand for that kind of hatred.

As a conservative I am embarassed to be on the "same side" as the people at Charlottesville. I condemn everything that happened there, and want to make it perfectly clear that they are a small minority that are not supported by the majority of our "side." That said there are people on the left that do similar things, but I don't see the majority of liberals condemning their actions. During the riots in Ferguson even after the "hands up don't shoot" narrative was proven false many many people still ran with it, and the President at the time did not condemn the actions (as far as I recall, if he did feel free to correct me) of the perpetrators that burned down 25 businesses, 2 police cars, and a dozen civilian cars just in one lot. To a smaller scale there were the riots in Berkeley when Milo was set to speak there that caused $100,000 in damages. Again, I don't remember any prominent figures on the left condemning those actions. Now, that said we need to be fair. If you're on the right and don't condemn the acts in Charlottesville, you don't have the right to demand the left to condemn the actions of their supporters during the riots they've had. But I know the prominent figures on the right have condemned Charlottesville. I don't believe the left condemned the actions in Baltimore, Ferguson, Berkeley, or any other riots from their side.

I am a strong liberal who has many very far left beliefs and am strongly against any sort of violence whatsoever and believe we need to stop learning about wars in schools, but why they happen and how to prevent them. The thing is that these people do have legitimate grievances but the issue is they too are being ostracized by people for their sex or colour of their skin. What we can do to help alleviate the tension these people have is to discuss, debate, and chat with them. I'm a coloured person and what do I do when I meet a racist person? I show them kindness and try to get them to understand that I am no different than they are. Try to find out why they hold these views and try to prove them wrong. If you choose to be mean and violent towards them all you will do is make them believe any preconceived notions they have to be correct. Fighting violence with violence and hate with hate will always lead to the same fate. There is a saying that we should try to bring back, "Kill your enemies with kindness."
@AzureWanderer557 жыл бұрын
+Black Ribbon That's the thing. Not enough people nowadays don't even want to talk about why this stuff happens. The only way to find a solution is to find out why they think this way then to convince them otherwise by having civil and open discussions.
@Emogeta7 жыл бұрын
It seems to be that way as many would much rather just bring up the past in order to end the discussion and claim themselves correct. Many say that there is no room to discuss or chat with Nazi's simply for those killed during WWII. Though, I am sure these people are perfectly fine chatting or being near a Japanese person despite the fact the Japanese attempted a genocide of their own that took more lives than the Nazi's did.

I agree with everything you said in today's show apart from the end when you said that most of these people are gonna convert or something. Because the most annoying thing for me personally is those statements saying "it's all white people" that is so annoying because the majority of white people are rational people and should not be compared with neo-nazis, white supremacists or the KKK, the reason I believe we have this big uprising in alt-right movements is because of this idiotic mentality of "all white people are [insert type of discrimination].

Phil talking about Antifa is completely relevant in this case, as there is quite a bit of evidence that they were the ones who began the violence, and are known for violent protests. He should condemn both although the obvious onus is on the White supremacists who had one of there own murder others. However you don't want to empower a terrorist organization like Antifa to do even more damage then they have already done, by feeling justified in there violence toward anyone on the right.

Your entire premise is hinged on the belief that I need to hear why they believe what they believe. The underlying notion you're trying to bring up, without saying is, "MAYBE THEY HAVE A POINT", but they fucking don't. They're racists. They're racists and all of their beliefs are hinged on illogical belief structures which you most likely agree with (otherwise you wouldn't give a shit what they had to say). There is no "other side" to this argument. There is hatred and hatred is not a valid stance, my dude. But trying to pretend its about the integrity of journalism is just a fucking lazy argument. If it's about the integrity of reporting you wouldn't support these people. The right is a trawl of lazy journalism (as are left websites but I'm not currently talking about them). Such as the Daily Stormer, or other fringe right websites. It isn't about integrity, seems to be you have a slant you want heard. Even if nobody else cares to hear it. Yes, he was. He wants to be a hero among these white extremist f**ks. He wants to be an integral part of their history.

I think he mostly did it to show that this is an extremist and not all white males are like this. At least thats what I assume.

Ok let's get this straight already, all races matter, all religions matter( that don't do harm to the world), all opinions matter (that don't do harm to the world), all sexual orientations matters, Why? Because we are humans, get over it, at the end you are a human,a conscious being with the ability to change the world and other people, let's not get caught if the water is too cold or too hot, let's care about just the water.

Thank you DeFranco, for giving a refreshingly unbiased approach to this. I consider myself a conservative, I voted for Trump, and I think that white people are sometimes unfairly restricted from talking about race and can actually be discriminated against. However, I am disgusted by the racist white groups that came together in NC. I despise their ideas of ethnic cleansing and white supremacy. I truly believe that the majority of people are reasonable and can see people for their worth and not their color. I hope we can all come together and have an honest conversation about what we are going through.

I know I am so very late to this but as another tarheel and someone who is a liberal and did not vote for Trump and I would honestly like to know your opinion on Silent Sam, I'm not here to bash your opinion in any way. I hate that Folt gave the $5 million for a for it to get it's own building but I do not think it should still be out on campus, I just would rather have money go towards working AC in some of the buildings on campus. I don't think it should be hidden away but really, $5 million?! Sorry if you have no idea what I am talking about, I live in Chapel Hill and with it getting brought down and all the protest on both sides it has been in the news a lot.

Phil, usually you only say a terrorist's name if they're still at large, but this guy was already apprehended. Why'd you report his name this time? (Crazies, this isn't to insinuate Phil treats domestic terrorist differently. It's just a legitimate question about his usual strategy.)

yh i agree, maybe he wanted to provide context of what the guys beliefs were, but he could have done that without showing his face or name

I think it's because he's not a "tv terrorist". You know, he doesn't look like a terrorist. So I think Phil is trying to remind us that terrorism is not an ideologically exclusive thing. It also might be because /pol/ lied and spread lies about the attacker.

We are being divided by extremists elements that are trying to speak for all. Antifa, MLB, and Black Panthers vs. White Nationalists, White Supremacists, and Neo-Nazis. Both sides are constantly riding everyone in the middle to pick sides while destroying the very foundations of our nation. They want it to be Minority vs. Whites, South vs. North, and Republican Vs. Democrats. To me it feels more like manipulation and power grabs by the leaders of these groups, misleading the public while condemning anyone that doesn't share their views. It is a sad thing and I'm sick of both sides.

they are mad because they are the native population and are routinely discriminated against and have had 1/5th in reduction of majority population in half a century. in another half century it will be even less. People complain about native american indians, but seem to have no qualms about their own race getting wiped out despite building the modern world. world is fucked.

I have no problem with people condemning Nazis and otherwise despicable people, but I can't stand when people encourage violence against them, because despite how disgusting someones views may be, to attack them only hurts your standing and helps evil people prove their point and gain new followers.
@docholliday60827 жыл бұрын
The only thing that stops a riot is an overwhelming police presence at the scene. We've seen this enough times to know what happens when these two groups meet. America's mayors need to grow a spine and order their police forces to disperse these crowds the instant things turn violent. And we citizens should demand that our elected representatives stop tolerating this crap.
