I also hate when people cite the statistics how many men get raped vs women. A small percentage of sex crimes are actually reported, plus social stigma makes men way less likely to report. So yes. Statistics, while useful for finding data patterns, are flawed.

@pewpewcricket6834 it's the same in most countries that the legal definition of rape is forced penetrative sex by a penis, and so men can be raped but only by other men otherwise it's considered sexual assault or sodomy.

My girlfriend is a school-based therapist and a lot of this overlaps with the things she's told me about the domestic violence and sexual assault cases she's had to mediate as well as with her job in general. I have nothing but respect to the people who do this kind of work. As difficult and draining as it may be, it's important, and I wish more people appreciated it as such.

After being unable to find a therapist who would work at my pace, who really cared, who literally gave me her cell phone number, so I can rarely contact her if there is a crisis I have to deal with. One component is that I was abused for 2 to 3 years, from barely 4 to nearly 7. For up to 3 months at a time without a break from the rape. I never got justice or help or dignity. I was made to believe it was my fault and my sin. I realised in my 40s, i needed a child psychologist. It took years, but I found my angel. I found a k-5 therapist and social worker who was willing to give my child self one single adult in the world to trust except my love. Like this channel says, I needed someone to hear my story. I am always the one helping and healing everyone else and I don't really understand self care. God bless your girlfriend. If she ever has a weird client who needs help as adult. I hope she hears them out if she can. My trauma is so connected to the child I was, parts of me become that scared, vulnerable child again. I don't think a therapist trained to treat adults can really help an adult with severe childhood trauma. I cried my heart out to get through making this post...but if somehow this knowledge helps 1 person, it is worth it. I know how it feels to feel worthless and nobody should ever know that true feeling.

Most of what she said about the police not taking it too seriously is true. My mother was pretty damn close to being raped and then the guy gave up on her and started targeting me when I went to school or someplace else. I called the police and told them about this and they didnt do much to prevent this from happening again. They just filed a report and said call again if there was any trouble. If I had known at the time that this hotline existed I would have called, as the person was also insane and got damn near hurting me a few times. At one point he was even in a hospital for mental people.

The worst part is the fact that centres don't take it seriously, the people at the top 1. Don't pay these people enough and 2. There's no system in place to ensure that these people don't just burn out and they hire another one with no care for their well-being. There needs to be rotation, debriefing, these things are not just important for people who went through traumatic experiences but just basic human beings, stress management is SO important and there's so little of it. The image that I get is always that: Good people on the ground, higher-ups that don't give a single fuck

Children texting in being a last resort is so real. I don't work for a crisis line, I've been an admin/moderator for an online childrens game for a very long time (taking a break from that while development on the sequel is underway), and it was not at all uncommon for children to disclose to we faceless administrators. We each have an ID number and the kids would get to know us, because COPPA compliant forum and live chat is so highly controlled. The kids who disclosed to us were, without exception, very isolated. In plenty of cases, we were the only adults they "knew" out of their strict church community. We did what we could for every single child - the owners even sought legal advice on what steps were available for several - but our main goal was always to validate their feelings, thank them for their trust, and tell them that whatever happened wasn't their fault.

Did the suicide hotline, followed by several mental health jobs. Regarding becoming numb to it all, part of it is due to the fact that your perspective of what your society really is changes the more exposed you are to these kinds of things: you slowly begin to realize that the mentally ill, suicidal, victims of rape and more have always existed in your society, they just aren't brought into the open where people can see them for who they are. And frankly, many people SHAME them for who they are so why would they be?

I used to volunteer for a Crisis Line. It's interesting to see how similar it is to an abuse line like this one. Yes, including the perverts. Lots of mentally unwell people who are just lonely and looking for someone to talk to. But still plenty of people needing help. I'm sorry to hear, though, that her job doesn't seem to offer any assistance to their workers after dealing with particularly traumatic calls. This is something that should be provided because it can be very traumatizing! In my country, this kind of service is provided to emergency operators (like 911) and to crisis lines. It should be provided here too.

I am currently in a relationship with is emotional, physical abusive plus neglection for our children (he neglects them). I live in Finland and honestly, no one takes you serious. Finland is nr2 of most domestic violence in Europe. The police doesn't take it seriously, they just ask the man about the situation and if it's true what the woman has said and if the guy says, it is not true, they leave again. Why would a guy admit of doing something wrong? Currently CPS is involved and they are on his side, saying, since I am the mom, I should do everything without help (have 2 kids, one is 5 and other one is 1 1/2 years old) and it is my fault that the dad is acting like this. He obviously likes to hear that, but his behaviour doesn't change. CPS says that he needs more free time, well he has all the free time he can get, meanwhile I have about 3 h in a week free (when a friend helps out). I have tried to get full custody many times, but always gets denied, because this is Finland and I am not originally from here (I'm Austrian, but children where born in Finland). I am not even allowed to go home, unless he let us and obviously he does not.

This is actually one of the jobs I want to get into. While I haven't experienced things this bad or often, I've had to help so many of my friends while they're on the verge of suicide or talk them through instances of rape to the point I can easily identify what stage of recovery or urgency they're in. It's taxing and on some level I probably have trauma from it all, but I wouldn't give it up for the world either. I want to help people and be the person I needed when I was struggling

I just hope that things can get better, or at least somewhat manageable for me so I can pursue my dream. And that's the plan! I keep learning because at my core, I love to find out new things. @@Sp1derBedo oh man. I am in a bit of a health spot too. I really get that. If you feel that way, maybe an online university experience from a real university might be best for you? From Dec 5th to 15th I am getting a procedure every other day to help my knee and digestive stuff happier...well after weeks of worse pain 😅 Right now my whole life feels like all phone calls and office visits. Having a mental will much stronger than your body is a frustrating situation. Waiting months, even over a year to get in with a new specialist. I don't know you, so just feel free to ignore my advice. I know how it feels to have someone else say what they think you can do or not and I hope I am not coming across as overbearing. I really care for each person and if somehow I can say something helpful, I will try. I forget the author, but there is a famous Greek who wrote a book on how to life a stoic life in the face of reality. I doubt you'd get the wrong book if you search on the web. Building my willpower up to the maximum and learning to want nothing I do not truly need made a lot of sense to me. If you go into social work, make sure it is fulfilling for you. Those jobs will grind down anyone who does not live to help others. You need to feel good doing this kind of work. You will need a therapist of your own! Do not feel it is weakness to need a 3rd party to talk to yourself, everyone who gives therapy is in therapy or they are down a dark road. Fight for your ability to go to school, even if you need to get drs to sign off on you needing accommodations. ❤❤❤

But it never feels like it’s enough. I’m appreciative that the kids I work with trust me. But fuck man. I’m not a savior- but ironically thanks to my own bs growing up I’m stuck with a savior complex. And sometimes it just feels like my inability to legitimately fix it, not that it’s even fucking possible, is contributing to the problem. Goals to work myself out of the job. But the work just doesn’t stop. And at times it feels like a Sisyphusian task. To be completely deadass with anyone reading this. Just be more kind to people. It can make a world of difference.

This person is so great and I really commend them for doing this work. This is a great example of how jobs in the mental health field for people who haven’t got a graduate degree yet are soooo difficult and deserve to be appreciated a lot more. I’m an AMFT and as a therapist, I would say my pre-graduate work was a lot more difficult and emotionally draining. I worked as a residential counselor in several residential treatment facilities for teens, and the experience was so valuable for the same reasons, but so hard and I have so many stories like the ones this person gave where I had to take a step back and just go to my car and cry. Mental health workers are in this field for a reason and my heart goes out to all of them. Good on this person for knowing their emotional limits and choosing to work with a different population ❤

Honestly it's amazing that operators, or, well people like you can talk like this with people like this so much. I tried to help people online, worst is I can't know if what they said was real, I believed them and it's rough. Some of the stories are enough to make my stomach churn and worst is that I can't do anything but make them smile really, knowing that you can!t do anything just gets to you, how do you do it? I personally later stopped doing it later. (I was helping random people between like 10/11-14 years of age and I am 16 now) I did love making people smile, but lot of people just became unhealthily attached and manipulative, trying to make me E-date them cause I made them smile when they were down. Or straight up people who just used it as a date app, trying to get a date with whoever helps them. I mean atleast 2 people say I saved their life by being there so that makes me happy, although 2 people used meto send their last message to someone which... yeah doesn't feel great. I don't help people randomly anymore, mainly because of the E-daters, as more and more tried to manipulate me later.(ew) I still help my friends and friends of my friends, it feels nice to support someone. What's terrifying about it though, I still feel sad, disgusted, angry and so on. I am actually a crybaby, crying at every sad story. Then my classmate, a friend died and i didn't even feel sad. It scares me, I did learn to make myself numb to emotions superficially, and it scares me. Either wayback to the topic, how are you actually able to handle it? Do you not feel burned out? You help others, so I hope you take care of yourselves too, you seem like a nice person/people, not exactly sure how many people are there. Hell I am just a stranger on te internet so no need to trust or answer me, but if I can ever help, I'd be glad to. Have a pleasant time and stay safe.

Of course college graduates are going to get burned-out, traumatized or even pick up mental illnesses if they work on hotlines like these where they can be exposed to any kinds of horrible life experiences... Calico is very sweet and brave and I'm happy she's feels okay after that horrifying call ! And I agree with the attractive voice, but when you hear someone who listens and helps you through a phone line, it's pretty logical to love their voice in return 🥰 ! 12:30 I actually think that this was on a bbc show called ‘the real csi’ episode five i think ‘an admission to murder’. But then that one i think he called 999 [said what happened] and then snorted a couple and... entered his neighbor’s garage and made it a double homocide - his two kids were at school also tho and he was laughing over the line... if it isn’t the same case then the calling in laughing saying they’ve killed their wife is more common than i thought...

What a sweet person. I did not expect so much wholesomeness in an interview about such a dark topic. It's also kind of cute(?) not sure what to call it, that the person to who everyone vents finally gets to talk and vent to another person about it. Not just one person either, but tens of thousands of them.

I was surprised when she said if a 12 year old called she would tell them to contact the local advocate. I would figure if any minor called and they say was sexually abused the immediate thing would be getting ahold of the authorities and getting them out the situation even if offender isn't there and right after that finding the offender to put them in jail. I figure it'd be like going to a hospital or school counselor. They are trained to get victim into a safe environment or immediately calling authorities. If not authorities at least dcfs and they gonna call authorities anyway. Because kids can't protect themselves. I couldn't do it. Any minor I'd try get a way to find out where they at, try to get city location, and look up their local police station right up and report the situation. On side note, these services are available anywhere in America and very useful. Can't remember a number but think it's a short number like a 411 thing but can't remember number, been like 12 years since I used service You call them, tell them what resource you're looking for, give em zip code and any town in America they will tell you closest place like homeless shelter, utilities help, rent help, it's not just for rape or abused victims. It's a call service to give the caller about ANY resource you need in your town. Even soup kitchens. People having mental breakdowns or thinking about suicide. Also if callers ask why things are taking so long just say "government bureaucracy"a lot of people know anything from the government goes at a snails pace and in the military even have a motto for it, hurry up and wait. You don't know how much they will have you hurrying to location just to not be ready for you and make you wait 3 hours. When I went to asvab for Navy it took literally all day to take asvab, well technically a day and a half, spent 4hours to go to closest asvab center, then they have all branches together in a hotel where u can do whatever until next morning then it's test all day. Get seen by physician, take drug test and get like 15 people at a time in a room to show them u can crab walk across the room then stand in line and there'll be dr each side of you for shots, 3 times so 6 shots. Oh I almost forgot. And watch like a 30 minute to hour long movie with shit loads nasty ass pics of every std known to man at different stages while a way to intense RDC or whatever your branch equivalant of a drill instructor tells you not to fuck the local girls and making observations how this prticular disease looks like certain type of food you'll then never want to eat again. Think they gave you breakdown of and maybe general rules and core values? I don't think ranks. But all that stuff might be for 1st day of actual boot camp which if you want it to be can be very soon. Like hour after taking test soon. After asvab you talk to someone I think, they tell you you what your options are from your score, you pick rating which means job. I'll always remember I didn't really try so did so so they wanted me to be an accountant. I was like I am not going into the navy and spending months at sea at a time just to sit behind a desk and do what I can do in my hometown. In retrospect I should of studied and tried a lot harder. For 1, wrong answers don't count towards score only right answers so if you don't know a question pick a choice anyway. Other reason is Navy has some of the best sign on bonuses. With minumim being like 5k but average prolly around 15k to 20k and top of the line is like 40k for machinist mate nuclear so you in reactor room on a sub but think you need 95 on asvab. I ended up going he gave me a list I picked interior communications electrician/fireman mainly cause I saw "fire control technician" with a 15k sign on bonus so thought I was getting 15k extra but found out later that a fire control technician isn't same thing as a fireman. They do exact same thing... but it's on a submarine not a ship. I was going on a carrier. Still, i-cman/fireman better than accountant in my eyes. Well more physical anyway and little bit more exciting. I told them no desk lmfao.

Clipart about police not understanding domestic violence made me remember the statistic of reported domestic violence where the perpetrator was a police officer. And it's just like yeah no wonder the police don't take it seriously because they want to live in their own happy world where they aren't being abusive so of course you're not being abused it's just what they would do to their own spouse

Think I know the murder case. I can’t remember when it exactly happened but I do know that the husband killed his wife attempted to light his house on fire after going apathetic and he took his own life. The house was recently bought by a couple with small children. It was in my neighborhood I remember police showing up in the fire department and EMTs and I saw the body of the man.

It's so disgusting that these things aren't taken seriously enough by the police. Slight trigger warning but... I know so many women who have been abused and gone through sexual violence, usually multiple times by different men and no one was arrested in any of those cases. It's absolutely disgusting... in my home town there was also a 19 year old girl who was choked by her boyfriend who had been abusing her and threated to kill her mother if she left him. She almost died but he only got 1 year... it's so frustrating. I know someone who was beaten by her husband. He was taken to the police station but then let out, nothing happened. And although I don't personally know any male victims I know for certain that it happens to them too and It is so infuriating, things won't ever change if the police don't start taking this more seriously.

I kid you not! I was skateboarding and the cops showed up at the park. They started to search us for illegal substances or weapons (its a crime hotspot, so they dont need a suspicion for a search under german law). I had baggy jeans with pockets so long that they reached down to my knee! The cop was searching the pocket and it behaved like a glove. He was wearing gloves so he didnt realise my pocket was just deep and not wide. He was feeling to the right (outer side) and the left side (inwards) and eventually pinched my glans... I just made a face as I was both shocked and it hurt as well. He saw my face, realised what he had done, became "fire engine red" and stopped the search. Didnt check my second pocket, my backpack and not even two of my friends. All 3 of them suddenly had enough :D This was fun as hell in retrospective (well not the being pinched part, but the reaction was hilarious)!
