As someone who played botw, I thought that the tutorial did a good job of forcing me to use the new abilities, particularly ultrahand and ascend, instead of relying on the paraglider and 3 stamina wheels
@smsry
@smsry 11 ай бұрын
I think it's just unfortunately unavoidable that the tutorial feels like a slog to BOTW players because we're so used to the core mechanics and if you've played BOTW you probably played it for upwards of 40 hours, and you're already used to having many hearts and stamina and the paraglider. And when you come to Tears, you loose all that for the sake of a new game, but the problem is the base game is basically the same, and the game forces you to relearn everything because it has to accomodate for new players. That's why it feels like a slog.. A game where it actually works is somethin like God of War 2 and 3.. when you go from 2 to 3 you loose all the health and upgrades and what not at the start, but it never feels like you're ripped off or boring to go through the tutorial because the game's completely different with new levels and platforming designed for a completely new game.

I have about 500 hours in botw and I fuckin loved the totk tutorial. I liked that it takes everything away. Does it feel not good to have no stamina. But because of that, you learn that you don't really need stamina to get around. You have so many other options and that's it teaches you. The first 20 hours or so was some of the most amazing ah ha moments I've ever had in games. I wouldn't rate totk as my favorite Zelda game, but holy fuck I had an amazing experience with it

I came into ToTK with over 200 hours sunk into BoTW, and one of my favorite things to do in the latter game was screwing around to see what the physics engine would let me get away with. So immediately after getting Ultrahand, I went out of my way to start stapling trees together to bypass as much of the level design as I could. It was obvious that you were supposed to go in a sort of counter-clockwise direction around the islands, which would naturally introduce you to all the mechanics you needed to learn along the way, and my approach of disregarding the designer's intended direction felt really empowering at first. I felt like "Oh yeah, I know Breath of the Wild, I get what they're going for," and I just did my own thing. It wasn't until I started a new save (so all I wanted to do was get off the islands as fast as possible) that I realized how much vital information I unintentionally skipped over. That's kinda the paradox of the freedom this game gives you. It wants you to be able to do your own thing whenever you want, but it also has a story that it wants to tell, and it tries railroading players into the direction they need to go. I've talked to a surprising number of people who accidentally went HOURS without the Paraglider because they thought "Eh, I'll do the main questline stuff later."

Eh, they still want you to "break it" in ways they intended, they removed a lot of fun bugs from botw like whistle sprinting or bullet time bounces and many more. Of course players discovered new bugs that are even more powerful but I don't really get why they removed that and took that freedom away, not like these "bugs" were interfering with normal play of casual players, it was just a fuck you to people who knew those tricks and wanted to use them. And also they immediately removed some totk specific bugs that were discovered right after release so they really don't want you to break it, they want you to exploit the intended mechanics in fun ways but to not go way beyond the intended use.

As someone who played BOTW, I found the sky Island to be a good time. Very nice too since I hadn't played BOTW in years, so a lot of the skills I gained had rusted and needed to be relearned. One thing I will say that I noticed is that the sky island was more linear, imo compared to the great plateau. TOTK very much pushes you to the ultrahand shrine first, then fuse -> ascend -> recall, whereas the shrines on the great plateau can be done in basically any order. Playing it did feel a little wierd considering how open the rest of the game is. One last thing I'll mention is I'm not afflicted with Goopy Goblin Gamer Brain (tm) as much as others, so learning little story bits about the goat ghost (goatst?), the robo-homies, and the robo-not-homies was also fun for me.

I didn't play BOTW, so this was all fresh for me. I got really hooked on the exploration, it reminded me of playing Elden Ring, where I was so immersed in the world and wanted to explore all the places, find everything hidden, etc. So I actually really enjoyed the tutorial on the sky island and tried to explore everything there - the limited stamina and tools actually made it even better in my mind because you were forced to find solutions with ultrahand, ascend, or taking one of those wing gliders. I love how the world is full of things to find, sure, it's not always super good stuff, but through the fusion and cooking mechanics, I never felt any item was useless. And even if it's just a Korok under a rock, the incentive to explore is strong for me. That being said, a huge part of it for me is just seeing the world, and if I had played BOTW, I'm not sure how excited I would be to revisit the places in Hyrule that are more or less the same. Now I just want someone to take the best elements from Elden Ring and TOTK and fuse them into the best game ever made haha love your work jakey, keep it up!

Having played both games, I actually adore how they reused the map and have had a hugely positive experience. Major landmarks such as stables and towns are in the same place but all the fast travel and item locations are different. It creates a sense of nostalgia for the past game and excitement to revisit places and characters that you once enjoyed. They also added the sky and depths maps so nobody feels cheaped out with no all-new maps.

Coming from a guy who is at 100+ hours at Zelda, I can just say that the Great Sky Island barely scratches the surface of what you can do in the rest of the game. Totk solves EVERY problem I had with Botw, the dungeons and puzzles are a lot more inspired, the atmosphere and music are out of this world like the old Zeldas, and the new powers create so many fun situations that will make you smile from one ear to another. And the things that Breath did well are also improved in here, so just keep playing the game and go back to talk to your brother when you are finished Jakey, you will love it! Hugs from Brazil🇧🇷

The most excited part for me was their chance at making a far better story, yet i still made the mistake of wanting to do a lot of stuff before i even tackled the story. After getting the quest to explore the different regions i started to grind shrines and the depths and it slowed my playthrough a ton, i barely played any maybe 1 or 2 hours a day at best and I was really bored really fast but then after doing enough i finally tackled the story and its definitely the better experience for me, but as i kept going into the story it also started to just feel off? The fact that there's regions locked by story or spoiled by story since you can view memories out of order, really hampered the experience imo. A lot feels like i was chasing the high of botw's first experience and it obviously can't stop it but it didn't even come close for me, the sky wasn't the most eye popping locals i thought it could be, the depths came close until you explore for more than an hour.

Like 2 years later I came back to it on the fancy ass GameCube collectors edition and loved it. I haven’t played TOTK or BOTW yet (except very briefly at friend’s houses) but I can appreciate the frustration of wanting to break through into the game and find the magic of the game that has so many people enchanted. peace love n kiss jaquuuuuaaaaaaaaaaaan

I did not play BOTW and I voluntarily spent about 12 hours on the tutorial island. I could have gotten off much sooner but I wanted to explore as much of that place as I could. I wanted to familiarize myself with things as best as I could before I took off into the world. Right now I am about 120 hours in and I have not done any story stuff past completing the 4 phenomena. I absolutely love this game

The great plateau and the starting sky island are some of my favourite memories from BotW and TotK. At some point you get a large enough stamina wheel to just jump up any cliff that you come across, or in TotK, you get enough parts/zoanite to make a vehicle to fly up. The start is where I feel my ability to solve problems in unique ways is put to the test. There aren't any really difficult parts, but I love seeing a higher island and thinking "Hm, I know I'm not supposed to be able to get up there, but I WILL get up there." Making long columns of trees stuck together that I thread through the geometry of the buildings to give myself a bridge to cross gaps, whatever it is, I find it extremely rewarding, and it's a level of challenge that I feel the further into the game you are the less you'll come across it.

I liked the intro well enough. My excitement actually dwindled once I landed back on hyrule. I spent like 30 minutes building a car, and that was probably one of my favorite moments. But of course it wouldn't work well (or save my build) and that's when I realized it was time to do a lot of walking in areas I'd been before.

As someone that really enjoyed Breath of the Wild, I thought the tutorial was long, but enjoyable. I enjoyed the shrines and some of the buildup or aftermath of the shrines, like trying to climb the snowy mountain, using the zonai gliders, and using the minecarts. The slowness was usually the inbetween, and I think it’s because it isn’t as hand holdy as BOTW’s tutorial by not marking where the shrines are. On one hand it lets you use the new abilities you get and be more creative, but it does cause it to drag a bit as you continue. Thankfully the game picks up after the tutorial and I’m loving it!

Honestly, I really haven’t had any problems with TOTK and preferred the tutorial area more than BOTW. Coming off the opening scene, I was pretty intrigued by getting my shit kicked in, and I appreciated them at least attempting to contextualise Link as the fully upgraded hero by the end of the first game, getting reverted back to level 1. Comparing TOTK to BOTW, I really liked how open the so called “tutorial” area is, however, TOTK felt like a streamlined, detailed tutorial section walking me through areas and encounters that caught me up on the new mechanics. I think the devs may have felt if players took too long getting back to a basics after playing the first game, they’d get annoyed. TOTK feels more deliberate, which may not appeal as much to players who loved the very open nature of BOTW right from the start. However given what I feel is the very deliberate ring structure of the sky island ring, it seemed pretty clear to me that I needed to go though it, then return to the ground. It should be noted, I never felt pushed or forced anywhere, my own curiosity was always rewarded by a really well tutorial area. If I was paying attention to an area, I’d notice so many little pieces of indirect teaching from the environment. Additionally, I was never disappointed by the environmental story telling. Seeing how this little area of the old civilisation functioned, and how every new thing only in found in TOTK had a specific context for being new, was great. I appreciate you don’t just start finding new things in the sequel, just because it’s a sequel. Pretty much every change to the world is contextualised, even down to new types of fish and mushrooms that you can cook. I spent maybe 2 sessions of 4 hours just clearing all of the first ring of islands, before dropping off the important thing with the lady (staying vague for spoilers) and heading to the ground. It all felt like a great beginning to the new adventure, and this will sound strange, but during the very opening I felt like Link from BOTW, but following the tutorial area it was like I’d had my ass rocked and gone through some serious character growth, seeing literally how small all of Hyrule was from the perspective of these ancient powers that just got unearthed. It was very refreshing playing TOTK, because I was a little disappointed by the environmental storytelling in Elden Ring. I haven’t been disappointed by TOTK at all. Pretty much every system has been improved or added to from BOTW, and I’m about 300 hours in now without any complaints. They literally gave a solution to rainy climbing. I love that. Goopy goblin gamer essay done. Good to see Jaquan back. Way better than that hack NakeyJakey.

Having played BOTW first, I was super excited to see what new stuff tears of the kingdom would introduce so I absolutely loved the tutorial area. It’s a completely new Zelda experience that feels like they’ve finally met the potential Skyward Sword’s introduced with its sky islands. Once you leave the area and the game becomes BOTW 2 I was a little disappointed, but I’m glad I got the experience I did for the intro area.

I loved the way I was encouraged to find my own way around it. like on the icy mountain up to the ascend shrine, I didn't wanna mess with making bridges across all the waterfalls, so I searched for a way to climb up and found it. outside of that, I think it does a great job of transitioning botw players into the mindset required for totk of making your own solutions to problems with these new abilities.

I started the tutorial literally as quickly as I could-starting the game the moment Nintendo unlocked it on my Switch. Took off vacation time to play the game, so was free to play from 12am-3:30am opening day. Was weird playing something that felt so intimately familiar, but with totally refreshed nervousness running around these platforms without a mental-map and no paraglider! It took me a long time to get through the tutorial that night, but it didn’t personally feel like a slog to me 🙂

I love videos like this, and would definitely be interested in hearing your thoughts on Tears of the Kingdom once you finish that and the same goes for Final Fantasy 16. Not trying to defend it, but as someone who’s played FF14 for the last 2 years and is caught up on the story/expansions, they definitely take their time letting their story and characters get fleshed out and it’s not just because 14 is an MMO. It genuinely allows these big climactic and emotional moments build up properly so that there is an emotional payoff. That being said, I could totally understand the opening of the game being jarring to someone who isn’t used to this team or just isn’t interested, especially the part about walking a little bit and then getting a cutscene. The good thing is that you can skip the cutscenes if you so please :)

I've never played the Zelda titles before Ocarina of Time, but I have played every one since then. In this one I was far more interested in the new build mechanics. I also love how they put things in place that helped some of the pain points from the previous game. Like rain, you can make potions or get a suit. I also loved how you can glide everywhere using the towers, I barely used a horse. I just glided, plus when the the debris fall from the sky, I would almost always ran up to it to reverse time and glide. Overall i liked the game. I think the Temples were a little on the easy side compared to OOC or Twilight Princess. It feels more like an expansion pack than a sequel in a lot of ways, I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

Pretty sure that's how the development started. They started it as an expansion but quickly realized they had wayy too many ideas to fit into an expansion, so they just made a sequel instead.

I’ve been playing Destiny since 2013 so it was interesting to hear you guys talking about the new/returning player experience so positively because its an aspect of the game that rightfully gets clowned on a lot. I really wasn’t expecting it to be Jakey’s kinda game but now that i think about it suits you perfectly.

I played (and casually speedran) botw and honestly, the tutorial sky island was SO fun for me, I just really enjoyed exploring something new and having those same sorts of "woah, holy shit" moments I had during my first playthrough of botw, which was something I was honestly scared it couldn't produce. But imo it delivered
