As a kid growing up in West Texas in the small town of Anson, when I was 10 years old I got my first chickens. The impetus for getting chickens was hunger; I wanted to eat better. My first attempt at raising chickens resulted in raising 22 chicks to adults and we ate all of the roosters. I can still taste the fied chicken and vegetables from my garden. Now I am 80 years old and still planting a garden. Today I am planting onions. Enjoy the smoked chicken.

At risk of repeating myself from yesterday... A small suggestion (based on experience): Perhaps consider placing the smoker away from a building. EXPERIENCE ... On the subject of the sliding gate panels (doorway). My experience with large animals is that they will "test" for weak points. Those rollers and/or a latch system won't contain them if they want to push the gates at the center. I'm recommending "pin-locks", which are a vertical slip pin (with a 90 degree handle) on each gate that slides into a receiving pipe that is placed in the cement floor. When the animals test the center of the gates they will only find a solid response. The vertical pins are mounted into preferably two slightly larger pipe segments that are welded to the gates.

Cut a small notch in the feed door where the hole for the bolt goes, weld a small washer on the top of the bolt creating a thumb screw. Then you just have to loosen the thumb screw to let the feed door open.
@birdsnbirdbaths-fd9qd10 ай бұрын
Say on your gates in barn doorway on the outside if where they come together, you need a metal rod that you can attach to one of the ends that can drop into a hole in the cement to lock it in place so it can't be pushed outward in the center when you're using the gates for doors. My friends did that on similar gates and they work great. It just slides up with a small L on top to lift or drop it with.

Al, instead of sliding the block to lock the feed gate shut, what about a rotating block for the feed gate. Cut a bevel in a wood block for your angle, and round the top corners so it can pivot. Then drill a single hole through the front top rail of the base and the wood block and put in a bolt for your swivel point. Swing to side to operate gate, swing back to block the feed gate shut. Easy peasy and you can use scrap wood.
@angeliquerider-mitchell253810 ай бұрын
Al, I'd probably just fasten one end of a a long enough thin, flat metal bar to the center of the frames crossmember in such a way that it could pivot So when it's hanging straight down it blocks the door, keeping it close but can readily swing out of the way to open the door. You could even bend it to be exactly what you need. AND more importantly, Gina did a great job on those door pulls🎉

While I don’t have a solution for your bin locking mechanism, I do have a low-tech solution for your barn doors: door props. I grew up on a farm, and we kept our sliding barn doors from swinging out by propping a piece of lumber against the door at a 45 degree angle. It’s not fancy, but it does the job!

Wouldn't want to be an animal trying to sleep in that barn on a windy gusty night. I know they know. No animals there yet. But a temporary prop would do wonders.

Al, if you bought some aluminized flexible vent tubing, you could move the smoker inside and vent it through the wall of the shop. That would make for easier smoking in winter, snow, rain, etc... Basically the flexible vent would slide over the chimney (you could use magnets to help hold it in place). Also less chance of critters trying to break in overnight as the smoker will acquire a smoked meat smell with usage.

As to the fabricated lock for the gravity bins, I suggest adding a wedge section to the block of wood to give a 90 degree surface to go in the angle rail. Recess rare earth magnets in the wood to hold it to the horizontal and vertical inside of the rail. Fix the wedge piece to your original wood piece so that the large piece is flush against the slope of the bin. I haven't tried this, but I have used magnets for lots of similar jobs.

For the bin latch, tie your block to the bin with a long string so it never gets lost. Lock the bin by tucking the block under a tight bungee strung across the frame.

In addition to the chains, would think you’d want to anchor the gates to the center of the doorway floor, so the animals can’t push the gates outwards and damage the walls. Keeping animals out, or in , takes a lots of “what if” planning. Think on it… it’s just a suggestion. Great job with the handles Gina! You expressed your thought process very well and executed the plan! I would use a semi transparent stain in gray… but finish off with a polyurethane.
@jfrodgers785810 ай бұрын
I agree. Any part of the gate beyond the doorway post will push in as the gate pushes out. (The doorway post will act like a lever fulcrum. Maybe.) But maybe there are strong enough gerts in the walls preventing that. Idk. Raisable pole in a hole sounds like a good idea.

I'm glad you were able to weld the frame together so that it was much studier. It'll be nice to have wheels on it to move it around. Smoking a chicken. Nice, brined is always good! Al, I would leave the shut off door on your bins alone. They are gravity closed and will not leak feed, so a locking pin is not necessary. This is true, unless you allow direct access to the feed bins to your animals. Goats and other animals will figure out how this would become a self-help snack station. If anything is added to the door cut off chute, would be a block of wood to make the lip of the chute easier to pull and push open and shut. The pin should have no threads so drill out the hole where the threads are on the door. This way the pin with the finger loop on the end just slips in when needed and can be stored in a hole drilled on the nearby frame. Simple solution.
