In case someone else had car trouble in Alaska and didn’t have a good shop like in Anchorage, they could put the car on the Alaska Ferry and be in Bellingham Washington four days later without driving at all. It’s definitely not cheap to put a van on the ferry, but then there would be a wider choice of shops than having to possibly leave the vehicle over the winter. I don’t know all the stops the ferry makes beyond Southeast, but I think it goes to Whittier and Homer at least. I went on their website and apparently the ship that crosses the Gulf of Alaska is out of service over winter for repairs, so I searched from Haines to Bellingham for a 21 foot RV at $1748, and it would be a shorter trip. This is something I was looking at for my trip to Alaska next year as all the places in the Southeast are only connected by the ferry, or airplane, or cruise ships. I think it’s more than the price of gas driving through Canada, but it would be a different experience

So glad it all worked out on the transmission. I drove my ProMaster until 124,986 miles when my transmission died ... in Olympic National Park. Luckily I only had to wait four weeks for a remanufactured MOPAR transmission and transmission cooler with a 3yr/100,000 warranty. It's been more than 28,000 miles and 15 months ago. And, I still love my ProMaster.
@clarkleakins8793 ай бұрын
The first transmission oil change when you found metal chips. The best step would have been a transmission flush. Because there were certainly more bits in the torque converter. Torque converter does not empty when you change the transmission fliud. The recent pan removal, the black burnt smell is the clutch plates disintegrating. Also, the transmission pump is dying, from metal debris and clutch debris. Good news! This happens to many vehicles after 100+k miles, especially vehicles that work hard up and down mountains. Yes, a small fortune to replace. That NEW transmission MUST have a NEW torque converter, NOT REBUILT! AND a warranty coverage for the unit AND INSTALLATION! Future, suggest that you have a transmission FLUSH at recommended intervals. Not a simple oil/filter change. NOW with 100+k miles on the engine. Suggest that you use a good brand (Chevron, Shell) premium fuel. Certainly cost more. Maybe every 3rd fill up on budget. The better fuel will help reduce/prevent carbon build up on the pistons and valves. You can calculate the increased fuel cost vs a sooner engine replacement. Of course maybe in a year or two you will replace the whole vehicle? The same model, later year, lower mileage? Transfer the interior into the newer unit. You have your own budget and life plans, just offering an idea. Hope you dont get frozen stuck in the great northwest! Unusual 100 degrees in the San Jose California area the last 3 days. Supposed relief comes Monday. CHEERS!

BTW ALSO in the meantime, you should consider looking for a Campwork job to do while you are there waiting for the Transmission to be fixed. A lot of places might offer for you to stay in a cabin or rented room or in an RV or tiny home in exchange for work on their property. House cleaning, landscaping, property maintenance, retail work or your photography for website updates for their business. Just make sure you explain to resort or RV park owners that it is only temporary until your van is fixed. I would start looking now just in case you do end up staying out of your van for a while longer than you thought. It wouldn't hurt to put your feelers out JUST IN CASE.

@@oneadVANtureatatime OK. Great! Most house sitting or pet sitting jobs will ask for references. You might want to put a list of references together to have ready just in case someone asks for some Professional (someone you have worked for), pet sitting references, and personal references (from friends who know your work ethic) like someone you worked with at the beet harvest or the potato harvest job. I hope you find something if you need it. Ask at the chamber of commerce in Anchorage. Sometimes they have a line on someone who needs temp help like this. But actually Right Now is the best time to find something because you can earn a little money while you are waiting to hear something.

I’m sorry to hear this. We had a 40 day layover in Anchorage this past summer when we had a small, non-injury collision. The actual time spent working on the rig was probably 5 days, the rest were delays, getting parts from the lower 48, and weekends when no work was done. We had to bounce from Air BnB with our two dogs. Fortunately, we’d hoarded credit card rewards which covered most of that expense. I wish you all the best. Hopefully, you’ll get through this adventure soon!

@@oneadVANtureatatime Hopefully because you’re in off-season, it’ll be faster. Our issue was smack in the middle of Sprinter season so it just took longer. Unfortunately, it always seemed that they found additional issues that needed more parts on Fridays! My fingers and toes are crossed for you to have a faster outcome. Do be sure to test drive a bit before leaving Anchorage. We did that but didn’t find a power steering leak until we were in Dawson City. We nervously monitored it closely until we got back to the lower 48, hoping for no more delays. Fortunately, it seemed to have been an overfill issue but we have an appointment with our home mechanic to do a thorough inspection next week. Despite the unexpected layover, we were grateful that it happened in a major city and got to really know the Anchorage area!

If you had Car Shield they would pay for the whole new transmission + other repairs. I really feel bad for you both considering that you were having such a good time. I really wish I was there to help you guys out. I wish you both well and good luck & be safe.
@oneadVANtureatatime3 ай бұрын
We always knew this was a possibility! And we are still having a good time. As far as vehicle warranties.... we have been burned twice, don't trust them. We are prepared for a snowy drive back. We have snow tires, chains and lots of warm winter cloths. It should not be too bad if we can leave before Halloween. A minimal amount of snow will be exciting and fun.
@jasontomica89383 ай бұрын
That's not true. I have a friend that had car shield. And they only paid 20% of it, some of it's a scam, some people get lucky with car Shields. Some people don't and same with the other programs out there that try to help you out and claim they're going to do all this for you. It's total b, s, it's a hit or a mess with some of these companies
@jasontomica89383 ай бұрын
Car shield can be a scam. I just told the other guy above and message. Him, my friend was in the same situation, they only paid 20%. He still owed over more than $10000 in maintenance issues being stuck in the middle of Canada. So that didn't work out He had to leave his car and go home. And the car was probably up for auction, or who knows what they did with it

Sorry to hear about your van troubles. I was curious if you regularly use the tow/haul mode when driving? There seems to be some debate if it is necessary/suggested to have that mode engaged while driving a built out van. Just wondering what your thoughts are.

It did throw codes, that is the only reason we knew there was a problem. We had no other indications. The ferry is quite expensive at $3700 and that would be sleeping in a tent on the cold deck in October. We would still have to replace the transmission once we arrive in the lower 48. We cannot afford the ferry on top of the transmission price.
@Chris-ut6eq3 ай бұрын
@@oneadVANtureatatime Wow, that's a bit more than I expected for the ferry, not sure why I would think it would be cheaper. Replacing the transmission would be probably less than putting a new roof on a house, it just so happens your home has wheels :) Crossing my fingers on a speedy parts arrival.

@oneadVANtureatatime3 ай бұрын
That is an option! Thankfully we are still able to drive the van and stay in it with no problems. I have been looking at alternative such as house sitting but according to the mechanic it will only take him 2-3 days to install the new transmission. If that is the case, we might not need alternative housing.

@@oneadVANtureatatime probably a better choice for what you do. The diesel trans doesn't have Park, just Neutral and the gears so you rely on the parking brake when stopped. It'll stop you from rolling backwards but not forward.

why not rent a cheap car to drive around while you wait, stay in the van overnight, and not worry about grenading the tranny?
