I'm no expert on that particular boat but it's nothing I would consider buying due to it's neglected state and the amount of money needed to get it back in condition to sail again.. I also think it was way overpriced before you even negotiated and at your negotiated price is still way too much money.... Before handing any money over or signing papers, I hope you get a professional survey done. The previous survey done was done too long ago to still be trusted... Professional surveys are usually the best money spent before buying any boat costing thousands of dollars. The interior will probably clean up pretty nice once you get all the junk out but it's still going to take some work and money to get back in shape...

We immediately recognize this Philippe Harlé plan, built in Condé-sur-Noireau, Normandy, France (I worked with the neighbor of the construction site, a printer). Indestructible. The shipyard still exists, it moved near Cherbourg (still in Normandy). Do not hesitate to ask them for information on the assembly of certain parts. In addition, the architectural firm is in La Rochelle, under the name of Mortain-Mavrikios.

At first I was worried. As you no doubt noticed - that particular marina is (locally known as) where boats go to die. But now I am more relaxed as I realize you know more about this stuff than I do - although I have been involved with several sailboats from the neighborhood. Including my current one. Welcome!

Things really get interesting when the boat gets a little longer and a bit wider😜 I do truly love our Cape George cutter and that is why we put in all the work we have BUT ther is lots to be said for an Aluminum boat like a Garcia with a nice and uncompromised interior like that. And i don’t think the owner would have accepted 11k$ which is what we had😸 Ps: i would be interested in those cowl vents if for whatever reason you are removing them. I don’t see why you should though. And now time to roll up the sleeves and get to work🤙🏽 Cheers, Aladino

“Arctic Sailing” caught my attention. I am retired from the US Coast Guard. I’ve been to Vitus Bering’s Sea 15-20 times, usually 2 months at a time, 3 months twice. In all that time I saw 2 sailboats in the Aleutian Islands. A sloop of just 30-35 feet in Dutch Harbor and a ketch of 60-70 at Kiska. Doesn’t seem to be a popular destination. On the Atlantic, though, the whaler commanded by William Scoresby, Sr., had been above 81 degrees 30 minutes north courtesy of that big bite out of the Arctic Ocean’s ice caused by the Gulf Stream. That’s where he only had 2 chances to determine his position each day- LAN (Local Apparent Noon) and LAM (Local Apparent Midnight). No morning sight, no evening sight, because the sun did not set when he was there. Remarkable!

Congratulations! Love the interior layout! Also it looks in surprisingly good condition. Only thing to look out for is the electrics. That looks like a mess and on an aluminum boat it needs to be immaculate. All circuits both AC and DC need to be isolated from the hull with a high impedance coupling at only one point to the hull. Ask 10 experts for advice and get 20 opinions. Do your own homework and trust no one!

if it's a budgetary stretch you could start out old-school and brush up on pilotage and possibly even celestial nav techniques, all of which are always a great fallback and would enable you to do without anything fancier than a handful of handheld waterproof floating vhf marine radios (with GPS) USD 100 each new old stock on eBay, and a couple of decent hand bearing compasses and a really reliable distance log. Paper charts are often available in shipping ports for not much. All up: a few thousand bucks, and you could wait until you're on top of the refit outgoing costs (and spend more on key items like sails, running rigging and anchors) because after all, electronics are a nice to have rather than a must have. And when eventually you do buy them, and more importantly, the wiring) t's not something you would be well advised to economise on. I'm very happy for you about the boat, but I'm surprised you went for something so big. Of course you will know running costs increase with something nearer the cube of the length tha the square, but I guess you have your reasons.

@@Gottenhimfella The equipment is not the issue, the stuff onboard probably still works. The grounding in aluminium boats is critical. If you do it wrong electrolysis can cause a lot of damage in weeks.
@Gottenhimfella
@Gottenhimfella 2 жыл бұрын
@@Nerd3927 Well if it was done wrong, the damage you refer to would already be done. And Juho was specifically talking about replacing the equipment.

@@Gottenhimfella Every alteration could be disastrous. One example could be adding a VHF or SSB. The antenna connection will normally be grounded and create a hard link between the hull and the minus. (Use a isolated DC-DC converter to supply just the device to solve this) Every change should be thoroughly checked.

Congratulations. It seems that you have found a strong foundation and you will make her happy again. My favourite videos of you have been of kite skiing and fixing problems. I suppose my biggest question is interior hull insulation (assuming you will be sailing in high latitudes)? I look forward to the refit and to your solutions. It's a big job but it will be interesting to watch and I think it will be really good for your channel. I have owned my present boat for twenty years from brand new and before my children were teenagers. I have lavished her with love and care, three generators, electric toilettes, power winches and the best lingerie available. With some degree of remorse I have decided to sell her. There are spares for spares and much extra stuff that will not feature in the sale price. I cannot say that for the new boat: for the new boat I am paying through the nose! I hope that you find many spares and many good surprises with your new adventure. Fond memories, fair winds and God speed.

thanks Oliver! too bad you're selling your boat, but there's life after boats as well! ;) Our Garcia is spray foam insulated above water line. It's not a lot of insulation but it'll be enough for us!
