Interesting, but I'd include time in the cost section. Time to search, purchase(furniture and supplies), move, restore, stage, list, deliver, sell, etc.. You might discover you are not charging enough on certain pieces. That could help you price pieces appropriately, or become more selective in the pieces you choose. You want to make enough to pay for your time, and then make a profit. By paying yourself for your time (and considering that a cost), you don't end up just working for the business. Your pay is money you get to keep, and your profit is what funds the business.
@diywife3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chip! I do try and account for time getting the piece all the way through staging, and also try to err on the side of estimating more time because there are likely costs I’m forgetting. You’re the first person that has simply explained WHY you pay yourself an hourly rate and the rest is profit that goes back into the business, that makes so much sense now!
@joemicheals49643 жыл бұрын
It's easy to quick calculate price minus cost equal profit but there are many hidden or intangible costs like time invested. This is where many people short change themselves. FULL travel and purchase costs, including the ones you don't buy because the seller exaggerated the item. Vehicle wear and tear, and maintenance. All expenses which can be 25 to 50% more than shown. Equipment costs and depreciation. Travel time to buy and time to sell and the endless online enquiries of Facebook. Endless " is this still available" and questions already answered in the ad. You spend as much time online buying/selling/responding as actually refinishing. And you need a populated area to move higher end product with more upscale buyers. The important little details that get left out of $4300 monthly profit. Not as fast, quick or easy as shown. Not to be a Debbie Downer but not as easy or simple as shown. Just FYI in the purpose of full disclosure.

What is there to be scared of, what do you have to lose, what is the worst that could happen? Maybe no-one wants to buy your first piece? is it nice? is the price right? still no sale? enjoy it yourself then, and try again with something else :). Start with just one piece, sell that, then just one more. Someone will always buy what you've made if it looks nice, and you'll only get more confident by practice, so get started! :)

I hear you about the energy having the channel takes. I restore a lot and upcycle but have to find snippets of time between my core work. I am really pleased with my latest project, a 4 meter by eight metre cabin, but feel sad that I didn’t take the time to take really good before footage, so people don’t know just what turnabout it is. I use second hand paints and mix them to get my desired colour scheme and have converted a buffet/sideboard into a fitted kitchen in this project. The flooring is stranded bamboo and was bought as leftovers from someone else over buy very cheaply on market place. Little projects like this are great for using and modifying other peoples surplus, stuff that goes into landfill otherwise. The trick is planning and buying with a broad design idea yet being flexible so you can take advantage of what’s out there.

I do paint and body for a living. I'm also an amateur carpenter. I've built several speakers with the cabinets, and recently I've been looking for alternative ways to make money, simply because I am burned out on paint and body. My wife has been doing furniture restorations for used furniture that we bought for personal use, and when we sell said furniture we always make something, but I never considered this as a revenue stream. I'm literally set up for everything you detailed in this video and then some. I made a desk and used automotive clear because it's impervious to almost all chemicals. It's expensive, but nothing makes a hi-gloss like this. Any way, thanks for this video!!!
