Last year we temporarily dry decked my old block with epoxy.
Worked great and did exactly what we wanted it to do.
That was until I cracked a cylinder head in half, and then proceeded to break a connecting rod on the very next pass.
So we decided to Permanently Dry Deck this engine by welding up all the water jackets.
Hoping to have better luck this year!

What happened with the previous temporary dry deck?

Wouldn't that stop the heads from staying cool. Really curious why exactly you would do that. Is it to prevent a blown head gasket. I can see no good reason to do that. Wouldn't it be cheaper to just get a good set of head bolts?

This engine makes 2000hp on pump E85. So the tuneup has to be spot on, or else it will hurt a head gasket. This way I can still circulate water in the front of the block and the heads, and out the back of the heads and the block, back to the radiator. Actually works very good. This engine has 6 bolt heads with 1/2" head studs, top fuel hoops and copper head gaskets.

If you go check out Steve Morris page this is how his drag and drive engines are setup. And they make upwards of 4500 hp.

Well done. May I ask you what kind of epoxy you have used before?

So is the purpose of this just to prevent a head gasket blowing? Other than that I don’t see a reason why

This is an all out racing engine, that needs to be able to drive on the street. So coolant is a must, but coolant near the deck surface is not needed. Coolant still circulates through the heads and block, just not at the deck surface. It is also an LS engine, and they are notorious for having head gasket issues, especially around 2000hp and above. This solves that problem.

Still holding up, and has worked flawlessly! Haven't had a single head gasket issue since this was done.

Yeah, welding up cast iron is like welding cow 💩. So you're going to plumb the heads and block with there own cooling?😊

Why can’t you just fill it with concrete? Or we not cooling the cylinder heads, only cooling the block?

I could of filled it solid. But I can still circulate coolant thru the block and heads this way. The coolant just won't pass from the heads to the block. Coolant goes in the front of the block and heads, and comes out the back.
