"We Plough the Fields and Scatter" is an English translation by Jane M. Campbel of the German hymn, "Wir Pflügen und Wir Streuen" written by Matthias Claudius in 1782.
The tune, 'Wir Pflügen' was published anonymously in the Hanover collection Lieder für Volksschulen in 1800. It has been credited to Johann A. P. Schulz'.
This performance is by The London Fox Choir.

Childhood memories, we sang it in church and school. I traveled back in time when life was innocent and joyful. When God was at the center of our lives and everyone sang this song with meaning because we truly thanked the Lord 🙏 be blessed and be a blessing, Jesus is coming soon.

I still love these old hymns. Even our very conservative church has introduced more contemporary music. We may not all agree on the music in the church, but everyone has to agree that this is a very different world than 1782 when good ole' Matthias Claudias wrote it. As I get older, I have a deeper understanding of Jesus words to the Samaritan Woman; (John 4: 23-24) "The day is coming and now is, when all must worship in Spirit and in Truth". That underlying truth has not changed one bit. It is our day to serve the Same Lord and Savior that they served back then. I think the most relevant criteria for the music in church has to be whether or not it actually glorifies God. Stay in the Word dear friends in the Lord. STAY PRAYED UP in all aspects of your lives. We will all be together soon. " In the twinkling of an eye"

I'm currently preparing my son's funeral. Most of the congregation will not be familiar with hymns. I have chosen this hymn for its simplicity, and also its hope for the future. It may seem like an odd choice for a funeral, but I think it is going to be a perfect addition. Thanks for this lovely version.

Takes me back to my childhood in the UK, when we used to gather in the hall for school assembly and on the stage there would be boxes and baskets filled with fruits and non perishable foods when it was Harvest Festival. I miss those days and school, our mum was right. It was the best days of our lives🙏🏾

The chancel of our little weatherboard church in a village in Australia would be packed with produce. I was delighted when a new baker came to the village, and for the Harvest Festival, he baked a very large loaf of bread in the shape of a sheaf of wheat. It stood proudly in front of the Communion Table, at the centre of the display.

This my best friends favorite hymn, despite being on 1 day short of 51 years between us, Natel and I became the best of friends around 25 years ago through our love of all things Steam, and he became a sort of replacement grandfather for me, who I lost when I was just 10. Natel started working on the land in his early teens, and never retired until he got to 85 years of age. In october, he celebrated his 90th birthday, and his traction engine, which he has owned for almost 60 years, saving it from scrap, celebrated its 107th birthday the same month. He named his engine Faith, being a deeply religious man, saying he had faith that the good lord would help him through the restoration of his engine in 1965, and that faith can move mountains (reference to Matthew chapter 17 verse 20), and I remember once me he and I were being interviewed about our engines by Christian TV, he quoted a verse from the hymn "The Wondrous Story" to describe its restoration back to glory.

This is essentially the hymn on my childhood. Growing up on a farm in little ol’ Western Australia, we’d sing this hymn every year at the harvest thanksgiving, and it was a favourite among my family, and generations past… It just lights me up to hear this hymn again, we barely ever sing it these days

Me too! Picking such an abundance of veggies from the garden today and out of nowhere I started singing this hymn. So moving and evocative! I too spent my first school years in England, “that green and pleasant land”, then came to Canada in ‘67. We also sang this for years at the United church. Sadly they got rid of a lot of these beautiful old hymns when the new hymnals were made. This harvest hymn will remain forever in my heart, along with memories of growing up as part of a church oriented family and community. ❤

I come from a small New England town in Massachusetts. As in every New England town there is that white church in the center of town on the town common, in my town it was the congregational church. I attended Sunday school there as well as services my entire life. Hearing these hymns, this one in particular bought back memories of this being taught in Sunday school and sung the Sunday before Thanksgiving. People are amazed at the number of hymns I know from memory when I attend weddings, funerals and services of other denominations. Most of which have adopted these hymns today into their services and masses. They follow you through life and do make you a better person.😊😊

We plow the fields and scatter The good seed on the land, But it is fed and watered By God’s almighty hand. God sends the snow in winter, The warmth to swell the grain, The breezes, and the sunshine, And soft refreshing rain. Refrain: All good gifts around us Are sent from heav’n above; Then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord, For all His love. He only is the Maker Of all things near and far. He paints the wayside flower, He lights the evening star. The winds and waves obey Him, By Him the birds are fed; Much more to us, His children, He gives our daily bread. (Refrain) We thank Thee, then, O Father, For all things bright and good, The seed-time and the harvest, Our life, our health, our food. No gifts we have to offer For all Thy love imparts, But that which Thou desirest: Our humble, thankful hearts! (Refrain)

Lovely. So saddening that children no longer learn these hymns at school. I always loved the harvest festival especially & always hoped I'd be one of those chosen to deliver our (often random) collection of food we'd brought for our harvest festival assembly & to then go out to give to the local community centres & old people's homes. It taught us charity & community. I hope one day the children of GB will once again be allowed to sing hymns & carols at Christmas.

@fly bobbie. You make the same mistake that most of the world makes, and that is confusing man-made `religion`, with TRUE faith. Two ENTIRELY DIFFERENT things which should NEVER be combined, because the man-made one will eventually cancel out the truth of the other, and until you come to learn the difference between the two, then you will continue to `tar everybody with the same brush`.
