Most people these days don't know that the first two communication satellites were metallic balloons. Called Echo 1 and 2 these 30 and 40m balloons orbited over 1000km high bouncing radio waves off their surfaces. They could be used by anyone who they was passing over. This included military and commercial users as well as amateur radio operators. For the 4 and 5 years they were in the sky they could also be regularly seen when they passed over at night brightly reflecting sunlight (just as the International Space Station does today).

If light rays are the problem then u could use a reflective surface on the balloon and for -80 degrees, use 5 balloons together to make one and on the main balloon put some kind of substance that keeps the heat unchanged like we use an aluminium foil for food.. sorry if im wrong just and idea I thought of and wanted to share :)

So the balloons don't stay hovering over a specific spot/area for that 100+ days, they're traveling all around the globe? Does that mean that the internet they're bringing isn't consistent in a location?

How does the balloon connect to the Internet?
@natandfriends
@natandfriends 9 жыл бұрын
+Julian G. there's more info on the loon site: www.google.com/loon. Here's a bit from the site below. Each balloon can provide connectivity to a ground area about 80 km in diameter using a wireless communications technology called LTE. To use LTE, Project Loon partners with telecommunications companies to share cellular spectrum so that people will be able to access the Internet everywhere directly from their phones and other LTE-enabled devices. Balloons relay wireless traffic from cell phones and other devices back to the global Internet using high-speed links.

How is a phone able to communicate with this if it is at least 12km away?

Balloons produce very strong wi fi signal.
@Max24871
@Max24871 9 жыл бұрын
But it has to be two-way, which means your phone needs to create an equally strong signal to send data.

Balloon's wi fi hot spot is enough.
@antivanti
@antivanti 9 жыл бұрын
+BMicraft In rural areas where there are less buildings blocking the signal a cell tower can be that far away and still give decent reception. My parents place is almost exactly 12 km away from what used to be the closest 3G cell tower. It's mostly over water across a bay. A balloon in the stratosphere would have no obstructions at all so it would have even better signal strength. One of the limiting factors of digital cell tower range without obstructions is the travel time. Because a cell tower needs to be able to talk to many phones at the same time it gives a small window of time to communicate with each phone but this means it needs to know how far away the phone is because the speed of light (and thus also radio waves) isn't infinite and it needs to take the travel time into account when scheduling. The allowed delay has an upper bound and it is that which limits the upper range of a cell tower. If you increase the allowed delay and have no obstructions for the signal you can get much higher range. I hope this was helpful. TL;DR Obstructions and max allowed travel time for the signal are the main limiters for cell phone range.
@antivanti
@antivanti 9 жыл бұрын
This need to know the delay is btw also one of the main reasons you weren't allowed to use cellphones on planes (until the planes got their own cell towers). Planes travel so fast that the method cell towers use to calculate the delay gets confused. The other reason is that being so high up from the ground it is hard for the system to determine which cell tower is closest to your phone and also the speed means you need to switch cell towers very frequently.

So how would the FAA feel about random tennis court sized balloons with an electronic payload dangling somewhere up in the stratosphere? It looks like the balloons have no way of altering their trajectory of they wander into an airport or basically any "No Fly Zone". ...But they'll make me have my .6 lbs hobby drone registered.
