Might be that it entered near the inflation point where the rubber is thicker. Like with a toy balloon, you can puncture it there and it doesn't burst due to a higher resiliency of the thicker material.

I don't think the dart actually penetrated the 3rd balloon at all, it just lost too much momentum in the 2nd balloon. The reason it blows out from the back is the ripples on the surface all travelling around and creating a weak spot that blew when they crossed each other on the opposite side of the impact.

I think it went through right next to the nozzle of the balloon. If you puncture that area on a regular balloon it's a slow leak (because the rubber isn't taut). Then it passed through the inside of the balloon and popped it on the other side

Several things are adding up to give lift. As a balloon stretches the pressure goes down. As the pump is a vane compressor it heats the air in the balloon and it is also heated from compression in the balloon. Would be interested to see a thermal, and I bet when it explodes the rubber is heated due to contraction

The outside atmospheric pressure is going down, due to less air pressing down on that air, allowing the just above "1 atmosphere" pressure of the balloon to expand, causing the catastrophic failure point of the balloon. In the reverse, this is why man cannot dive very deeply in a submarine, as the water pressure on it is immense. The weight of all the water above it is huge. Hence, all submarines have a depth tolerance, after that it is known as "crush depth".

It's a wonderful demonstration of the nature of a variable volume container. The internal air pressure of a balloon is always nearly identical to the external atmospheric pressure because the volume of the container increases with the gas stored withing. The explosive pop is the container itself overstretching or having its fairly equal structure become disrupted when, for example, some of the latex is suddenly relaxed around an incision while the rest of the material is under elastic tension. That bang is rubber snapping back to shape a incredible speeds.

i just want to point out, that if you watch the slowmo carefully at 6:30. you will see that the dart goes through the thick part of the third balloon, and pops it at the rear. that is what caused the delay in the pops.
