Nick, my wife has an onion/garlic/ leek (anything in the allium family) intolerance and like you has her IBS triggered if she eats these. For some time I experimented to find a replacement for onion in recipes. Eventually I found that I could make a blend of celery, carrot and red pepper (grated or blended together) which I gently fry off (takes a few minutes) to create a base that replaces sweated onions. I tend to use equal parts of the three elements (based on a whole red pepper, a couple of celery sticks and a carrot or two), to begin with the blend is quite watery but slowly sweating in a little oil will drive off the excess water to produce a suitable base. Give a try and see if it works for you. BTW, we have always noted this as an allergy when dining at Disney or other restaurants in USA and have always been well accommodated by the different allergy chefs!

FODMAPS has been soo good for me😎 But lve been on vacation and pushing my diet limits and yes l can’t eat onion garlic or broccoli but l can sneak in a little dairy occasionally Nick l hope your new FODMAPS diet works for you👍🤗🤗🤗
@yoms2 ай бұрын
Hi Nick, I’ve mentioned the low fodmap diet to you in the past. I know this was filmed ages ago so I hope you don’t mind me commenting but, with that diet, my Gastroenterologist made me do it coz of my ibs and she made me reintroduce high fod map food one at a time to see how my body reacted to it. You’ll find some things you can tolerate but only in small amounts, some not at all and sometimes what should kick your bowel off doesn’t!! So write it all down. Create a food diary so you can keep an eye of everything so you can look back on it, coz you’ll forget! Bev.

My wife was diagnosed with Digestive MalAbsorbtion (Fructose, Manitol, Sorbitol, Gluten) 2 years ago and was advised to adopt a FodMap diet. Diagnostic testing is very simple - after 12 hours fasting you are then given measured "doses" of the sugars and then breath samples are taken at intervals and analysed. I would advocate having it done at a hospital or clinic rather than using an "at home" kit. Just switching "cold" to a FodMap diet with out appropriate preparation will not work owing to the fact that the essence of the condition is that mal absorbed sugars have created a fermented mix in the gut and any foods coming through just keeps the reaction going. The first step is a cleansing phase. This means eating only foods which have little or no fructose etc i.e. Potatoes, Rice, Meat, Fish, Courgettes, Carrots, for anything between 2 and 4 weeks. If the symptons disappear without taking this step then it is very unlikely to be this condition and a FodMap diet is unlikely to deliver any real benefit. Going forward Onions and Garlic and definitely off the board although you can cook then gently in oil then strain and using the oil in cooking for the flavour. The sugars do not pass into the oil. Intake of Gluten should be restricted as this can be broken down into fructose and/or fructans. Some vegetables like brocolli are divided into the stalks and the heads in terms of FodMaps where the stalks should be avoided. It is also advisable to keep a food diary as the effects of eating "wrong" foods is not instant and the fermentation if started up again may show itself some days later and you need to look for patterns. If the fermentation does restart, then another cleansing phase will need to be undertaken. When researching the right foods to eat, take note of the advised quantities that go with the advice. We have found some foods classed as Ok are only Ok if you eat 20g or less, for example. That is less than 1 ounce. This suggests that a normal person portion is not acceptable so in reality it is best to avoid it altogether. It does take time to get this right so a proper diagnosis upfront is well worth doing if for no other reason that the time it saves if a FodMap diet is not appropriate. Almost identical symptoms can be presented by Gaul Stones or Gaul Bladder disease in which case its removal can resolve the problems. Today this procedure is normally done by keyhole surgery and one night in hospital.
