Thanks for the shout-out. Awesome show, that's why I didn't suggest the JD 12, I knew it would stand out too much. Can't wait to see the next one, bring the random wheel back, love it when Kurt's wife makes the picks. OK Trent, easy explanation: Jelly = juice ( usually clear, like apple, grape , etc but also herb like mint or peppers) + added fruit pectin. Jam - pureed peeled fruit with / without added fruit pectin depending on the fruit used (often berries or stone fruits) and can be cooked or frozen, so smooth spreading. Preserves = similar to jam but with whole fruit (less seeds an stems) although they can be cut or crushed. Marmalade = usually made from citrus fruit, similar to jelly but with julienned cut peel added for Increases taste and texture with a little added bitterness.

That was me who made the comment about Trenton’s Palate of a child yet when it comes to whisky is an Ace haha, and he sure is showing it today, marmalade is made from citrus fruits Eg oranges like Ace mentioned, where jam is made from Berries such as Strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and some stone fruits like apricots, I am not sure how Jellies are made in the USA as Jelly in Australia is very different over here and would be what Americans call Jello, everyone give me a like so it gets noticed haha, I am so jealous as we have such a limited rage of affordable Bourbons in Australia, all the higher quality stuff is very expensive compared to what it is in the states, for example we pay over $50 for your Jim Beam, and $70 for makers Mark and BT,Turkey is around $75, and Blanton/ Michters is minimum $140, if I knew I would be able to have access to some interesting bottles I would join these gentlemen’s discord in a second.. I am your number one fan from Australia, I have watched every single episode in the last 2 years, often very late at night when I get the notifications.

If my reading has been accurate, being charcoal-filtered does not take away its bourbon status. There are labeled bourbons that are charcoal-filtered. "Tennessee whiskey" is a marketing label, but it still meets every legal requirement to be a bourbon.

Trenton, I do competitive State fair canning. Everything contains sugar and pectin, are there variations yes, but this is a simple break down. A marmalade, is made from citrus and contains small pieces of the rind. A jelly is only the juice from the fruit/fruits. A jam is made from the whole fruit and the pieces should be small and uniform in size. A chutney can contain fruit, but it normally will have vinegar. A curd starts out similar to a jelly, but beaten eggs are added to create a curd consistency. All fruit is basically a jam with pieces of fruit more like chutney. This is a simple explanation.

For newer bourbon aficionados, Weller 12 is probably great. However, for my palate, they proofed it down too much. It needs to be about 100-110 proof to really make it shine. People well into their journey will want more proof. I don't expect that to change anytime soon as BT is selling every bottle they make so...why change? Like you said, at msrp, W12 isn't bad. I just got a bottle for $65 recently but I doubt I ever buy another. For that price range, I can get a KC12 or a Sagamore DO rye, or any number of better bottles.

Legally speaking though, there isn't a defined set of requirements for Tennessee Whiskey, it's just a branding/marketing addition Benjamin Pritchard's Tennessee Whiskey does not utilize the Lincoln County process, for instance. Edit: Nor does Chattanooga

Technically, Tennessee whiskey is a type of bourbon. According to TTB Standard of Identity, a Tennessee whiskey distillery could also call their whiskey “bourbon” on the label, as Dickel did with one release not too long ago. Maker’s Mark 2024 Cellar Aged could have been in this blind. Weller 12 has one or two disadvantages: chill filtration and lower proof. On its own, though, it’s solid.

When visiting Jack, they tell you their products are bourbon. In fact, their classifications are more specific, but compliant with, rules of bourbon. The addiction of the Lincoln County Process on top of standard bourbon regulations does not disqualify their products as bourbon. In fact, there are some Kentucky based bourbons that also use charcoal mellowing, but because they aren’t produced in Lincoln County TN, they don’t qualify as Tennessee Whiskey.

I wonder how much of that is resellers buying up crates of it @ $30-40 a bottle, and selling it at $200/bottle... so they only have to sell 1/3-1/4 of their stock to make a profit... and just sitting on the rest. I'd bet some of these online resellers have warehouses full of this stuff that they're happy to hold until a sucker buys it... makes me hopeful that BT gets enough production the bottom falls out entirely on the secondary market. Every other month I hear about Saz spending another billion dollars to increase production... so it has to happen eventually.

Jack Daniels Bonded is one of my favorites at any price. There's no reason why this distillery can't make their 10 and 12 year more readily available at MSRP. They're knowingly underproducing those compared to Russel's Reserve 10 or Knob Creek 12, they have the capability. So that's been a disappointment, it is anytime one of the large distilleries does this sort of thing.
@markcalhoun8219

@@ChristopherNeeme I am hopeful that they are building to that and ramping production so that the low volume release is the oldest so when 14 comes out 10 is readily available at least. It sounds like they are aiming to release stuff like 18 and 24 eventually. That would necessitate a ton of 10 and 12 year.

I do find Weller 12 to be a pleasant drink, and at MSRP it delivers a great sip for the price. But that JD12 is so stinkin good. I can’t help but love all of the nicer JD like Sinatra, SBBP, J10 and J12. I’ve tried many bottles and they always exceed my expectations.

I got my bottle of Weller 12 for $36 a little over a year ago. It sips like a wheated eagle rare to me, and i quite enjoy it, especially for the price I paid. Would absolutely not pay what they are going for though.

Really wish you were able to include the 1792 12 year in this blind. Saw it on a shelf recently for $99 and passed on it, but am curious how it stands up.

I completely agree with Trent on Jack Daniels being a sleeper distillery. I was lucky enough this past year to pick up a bottle of 10 year in the wild and just recently broke into it and man is it delicious I’m still looking for that bottle of 12 year but I’ve also had the barrel proof rye and boy is that fantastic. I’m jack Daniels fanboy.

I honestly have gotten to the point where I just live in JD land ... they've got pretty much anything I want and most of it is readily available on the shelf. The 10 year is findable but overpriced (but not crazy, at least in my area), so as long as I budget for it, I can replace it when I want to. The 12 is a different animal but because I am happy with the rest of their offerings, I can live without it quite easily.

I am not here to defend Weller 12, but it was at a distinct disadvantage in this blind since it was the only wheated bourbon in the bunch. Taste is subjective, but a wheater is going to stand out among those higher rye bourbons. I would be interested in seeing it go head to head with other wheated bourbons of a similar age like an Old Fitzgerald.

A blind idea, by state. Yes some will be extremely challenging, but 52 weeks in a year, with 50 states. (again some states might only have one option) but here in MN we would have a number to choose from.

Here's my take on the Weller 12 when it comes to blinds. And I'm just a guy who loves bourbon - you guys get to try way more quality bourbon than me. When you do blinds, even when the proof is similar, the higher proofs seem to gravitate to the top and the lower ones seem to not do so well. Like most people say Weller 12 is pretty dang good if you can get it for MSRP - but at 90 proof it's just not gonna blow your socks off because, well it's 90 proof. Good bourbon, totally overhyped but for MSRP it's a good purchase.

Tennessee whiskey is a bourbon but a bourbon is not a Tennessee whiskey. Nothing says a bourbon can't be charcoal filtered
@WhiskyForBeginners
@WhiskyForBeginners 22 сағат бұрын
George Dickel bourbon uses the Lincoln County process, but Benjamin Prichard Tennessee whisky doesn't. That makes clear the nature of the Tennessee whisky designation as mere image.
@jsaun6684
@jsaun6684 20 сағат бұрын
@WhiskyForBeginners Prichards was granted an exemption. Regardless of that the filtering process is still the only additional step that is not required for a bourbon. So my statement still stands tenn. whiskey is bourbon but bourbon isn't Tennessee whiskey. Just like a square is a rectangle but a rectangle isn't a square

You guys have done a 12-year blind already, back on April 26 ("BEST 12 Year Bourbon Of All Time?!" is the video title)...and the kicker is, you had the 1792 included in that blind! (It didn't end up doing very well. 😂) Also, your #1 and #2 picks from back then ended up being exactly the same bottles as today!
