A note quick note from a former off road racer... you guys should consider running full face helmets with a parker pumper, especially when you run without a windshield. Talking on comms is much easier/quieter and there's less crap hitting you in the face at speed (particularly important for Nolan since he wears glasses), plus fresh air being pumped in. My first year of racing, I was too broke to afford a good helmet so I wore my motorcycle helmet and goggles wired up with all the comm equipment, but I quickly changed my mind after getting hit square in the face by a bird at 70 mph. I lived to tell the tale, the bird did not.

It was inconvenient, but without the visor, I would have been injured for certain. I hope Grandiagod is right about using the open face helmets for test filming. desert drivers usually have helmets that have built in air system with filters providing fresh air. This is to prevent small sand particles being inhaled as well as from dust getting on the face. I Love this project. I wish I had that kind of money to throw at a similar year-model F-150 for a similarly capable truck. A small note about the theory of operation of the GPS tracker capability mentioned at 26:33, for context, I'm a satellite systems engineer who works on the GPS constellation and it is a transmit-only system on the navigation payload, meaning no data is sent from the GPS device (called a GPS receiver for this reason) back to the satellites. What is likely causing the slow refresh rate is either connectivity with a commsat constellation or it is being broadcasted locally over packet radio and the terrain is causing loss of packets resulting in less data getting to the monitoring device and slower rates. The last two are conjecture since I only work on the Space Segment and not the User Segment of GPS. Great videos. Keep 'em coming.
@dillonharr76287 ай бұрын
It's most likely just a slow GPS receiver. I build fiber optic links for GPS timing systems
@jakecooper99007 ай бұрын
I think there is some sort of gps tracker on the race truck. It seemed like they were getting Live updates to the chase truck for tracking its position.
@AndrewAMartin7 ай бұрын
While the GPS is receive-only for positioning data, the tracking system is then using satellite communication for the updates to the team chase vehicle. That was what was probably causing the lag times with a typical 2-3 second latency. Calling the whole system 'GPS' is a bit of a misnomer, as that's just part of it.
@rocketjockey21127 ай бұрын
Thank you for posting this about the GPS, it was driving me nuts when Nolan said that. FWIW, The location tracking is using InReach satellite comms which is why its so slow.

You definitively need add some FIRE EXTINGUISHERS for the engine bay!!! Maybe also add a handheld one on the outside, for either people to grab, or to extinguish some smaller things that don't need triggering the full system(s).

I've been waiting for this video, and now I'm super stoked to see how it turns out. It should be yellow and just says donut in big black letters, clean, simple, bold, it will stand out

Good test on the electronics waterproofing, but still, id of at least thrown a piece of plexiglass on the front for that.

Two suggestions (since I hope you're making the exhaust class legal anyway) - 1) full-face helmets, or at least goggles for all (including prescription ones for Nolan), and 2) you should probably move or protect that master switch that's in the center. You're going to be jostling around and it's only gonna take one elbow hitting it to turn it off at the worst possible moment.

I have no experience racing anything, and I get that it's not done, but there's no way that truck would get through tech the way it is now. SCORE just updated the roll cage regs too so who knows if that roll cage is legal. I imagine an air filtering system for the helmets is pretty high on the list. But yeah exhaust thing would be priority number 1 if it were me. It's illegal like it is now. For the master switch, it has to be accessible from outside the truck too. Most teams I've seen use a big red lever that you turn (and is safety wired) so it's easy for a safety worker to find if you're upside down. I don't know if they're consulting with any more experienced desert racers about this, but if it was me and I had no idea what I was doing, I'd want to at least reach out to them for some advice.

I WOULD KILL TO SEE DONUT BUILD A 5/1600 BAJA BUG. I know it will probably never happen but I would love to see that on their channel. also a few years back ago I was talking to an old friend about donut when they just start the money pit series. I said to him " they should build a ford ranger or a Toyota Tacoma Baja truck or prerunner. to my surprise a while down the road THEY DID IT!! not only two overlanded tacos, but now this! love the off-road stuff and the money pit series. keep up the good work guys so happy to see yall enjoy making the videos as much as I'm sure we all love watching them!

Can this even be considered a ranger at this point?
@AlfredoElDorado7 ай бұрын
I mean, the point is to transform the ranger into something far more capable and ready. It won't really matter if the final car is considered a ranger or not.

I feel like they need full face helmets that can provide clean air via a conection to a dust filter like someone mentioned in another comment so they aren't breathing in any dust, or at least as little dust as possible. maybe even a plexiglass windshield rivetted on with offroad wiper blades in the front for visibility. just to prevent a good bit of dust from getting into the cab in the first place. im pretty sure you can get helmets that have that and also integrated comms systems. and also maybe fab up some handles that the passenger can use to hold on to inside the truck near the seat for stabilization so they don't have to hold on to the door or roof in case of a roll over. it would be annoying to change things after doing so much work, but i feel this testing is good for showing what might else might need work.
