Highly enjoyable album review of one of my favourite bands. As well as seeing them live several times from the mid 80's so under appreciated. I was very honoured to briefly speak to Burke your Dad at a Budgie convention in Cardiff probably 20-25 years ago. A really down to earth nice guy. Got a nice photo of my brother and me with him which is now my Facebook picture.

Impeckable is never rated high enough. Nice to see that Popoff knows. Opens with a scorcher, closes with a scorcher... cool songs in between satisfying heavy and mellow... excellent performances and crisp. It's a great record... and for a Budgie fan, great deep diver if you burned out on the usual Kill Budgie Friends with your Bandolier in Britannia stuff.

Great mention about Chris Pike , I have his signed copies from 2016, Back To The egg - Budgie's Influential Early Years 1967-73, signed by Ray Philips, Pecking Order 1974-79, (great Budgie sounding title) Time To Remember - Budgie's Heavy Revolution 1980- 2010. With bonus 36 page booklet with band photos from that period. I also had many email contacts with him, such a shame he is no longer with us. Also have The Ray Phillips Story co written by Chris, & signed to me Peace Mark 29/4/2018 by Ray. RIP.

Highly enjoyable show, Hack. Along with Pete and Martin, you three really nailed your reviews. At times Budgie makes it into my top five bands of all time, alternating with Thin Lizzy for that fifth spot. I agree with you Hack about Tony Bourge. He definitely has to be up there with the greats. He's an unrecognized legend. I at least like every album and really love the killer ones like In For The Kill, Budgie, Squawk, Bandolier, Power Supply. Stunning albums!

Of the Burke/Bourge stuff the 6th album is my least favorite, but the 7th album is really good. I love Impeccable as much as the first 5

I was fortunate to see Budgie a couple times in the 70's in Corpus Christie,Texas. The first time was the best. They had a different guitar player the second time.

Great video, thanks! I discovered Budgie after hearing "Crash Course in Brain Surgery" covered by Metallica. I found a couple of Budgie CDs in the early 90s and fell totally in love with them. I'm looking back through my Budgie CD collection now, and as I was watching this video. Several of them have stickers on them saying "Made in Germany" or "Made in Austria." My "Never Turn Your Back on a Friend" CD has a white plastic CD tray that is yellowing with time. These CDs are now irreplaceable. I can't fathom going to digital downloads and not having something physical like this. Sorry for the ramble! Great video. My top 5 are: 1. Bandolier 2. Never Turn Your Back On A Friend 3. Budgie 4. Pete and Martin turned me onto Budgie with their reviews. I remember seeing their Album covers and posters in records stores growing up. I think Zeppelin, Plant and Page really stole a lot of their ideas and sound from Budgie. Yes I hear Rush and Sabbath in their music as well as Iron Maiden sounds. I love these guys thanks to you'all.

Budgie is a great gem from the 1970's and early 80's (mid 00's as well). For people who know their Black Sabbath, Scorpions, Rush, Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy, Queen, Aerosmith, Kiss, AC/DC, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Judas Priest, Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper, Blue Öyster Cult, UFO, Rainbow.. Budgie could be something you'd really enjoy! Some people wrote about Mannfred Mann's Earth Band as a future ranking in the chat. I'd definitely like to see that. Certainly an interesting band because they always developed. Cool to see what era people prefer!

Very nice talk. I vacillate between Bandolier and Impeckable as my favourite album from them. I love their personality, songwriting, playing, quirkiness. And I think they did the incorporation of funk on Britannia and Impeckable (even a bit on Bandolier) better than just about any other British band in the late 70s. I first heard the band in 2002, when I was 21 or 22, with the In for the Kill album. It always surprises me to hear that they weren't very popular. Not only did Metallica cover a couple of their songs, but there's a recording floating around of Van halen doing "In for the Kill" live, and Soundgarden covered "Homicidal SUicidal". I always figured they were just a band that everyone who was into 70s hard rock/metal would know and love. I think their variety and weirdness is at least 75% of what makes them so awesome. On reflection though, maybe that is why they didn't get too much attention at the time. Still, anybody I play Budgie for now is always impressed at how they sound, including people younger than me -- so I think their legacy will live on as a cherished cult band, and sometimes that's allright -- makes discovering the treasure of the music all the more enjoyable.

I discovered Budgie in the 70s. I bought "Never Turn Your Back On A Friend". Everybody said Breadfan was their best song. I said, "Really, Breadfan is their best? But, I didn't get into Budie until 2020... a Covid silver lining. Breadfan didn't even end up in my favorite top-20 Budgie songs.

I'd rate If I Were Brittania...as my least favorite Budgie album. Even the band felt it wasn't very good, but they were going through a lot of personal stuff, like divorces, at the time.

With Budgie, I have one album, and it's all I need. It's the Best of Budgie ('75). Breadfan, Zoom Club, In for the Kill, Parents, In the Grip...., Baby, Please Don't Go......very content with just this one!

The issue with Budgie was basically their image -the band were never the most photogenic band. I discovered them in 1972 - but they never looked the part.

My fav Budgie album is the first one, that's such a heavy record. It's got that sludgy, fat production that's somehow similar to Kiss Hotter Than Hell. Probably followed by Bandolier and In For the Kill! Cheers.

I first heard Budgie on an A&M compilation album called We Give a Damn, available through the Melody Maker music paper . The track they have on it is Balck Velvet Stallion whihc I thought was absolutely fantastic. My first Budgie album after that was Impeckable which I had on cassette, so that will always be at or near the top of my favourite Budgie albums. I'm less drawn to the earlier albums and would say I'm more in tune with Martin's choices, although any Budgie album is worth having, even Cuckooland. I was 17 when the NWOBHM happened and went to loads of gigs that included a fair share of Budgie headliners and supports - all with Big John Thomas on guitar, so unfortunately I never saw them with Tony Bourge. They also never released a definitive live album, although they do have a number of live recordings available of BBC in concerts , Reading festival appearances and live material from 1978, as well as a CD of demo recordings called the Last Stage.

When I first saw an album, I was turned off by the band name. Budgie is short for a budgerigar- a small pet bird kept in cages and never took any notice of them. I came across a Bandolier record at a record fair for a low price and found out a great band they were.

first 5 are essentail, if i were brittania is good,but production is a bit dry,it was strange,first budgie album i had was the debut,2nd i bought was if i were brittania,and much preferred the sludgy,heavy sound of the debut,john thomas era was cool too,saw them 3 times in the era,and i reckon i prefer power supply to if i were brittania and impeckable,though all round im more into the tony bourge stuff
