Bless the KZbin algorithms! I just finished binging your entire channel. It landed at exactly the time my wife and I are considering the expat life, somewhere. It's funny as I've followed Paul for literally decades and only last year retired from Microsoft so it's a little odd seeing him in a different context. Anyway, I so appreciate your transparent perspectives on the expat life, the tips you've learned and the challenges you've faced along the way. I'll continue following your adventures with interest! Thanks for opening my eyes to Mexico City!

KZbin surfaced this because I often watch First Ring Daily. This isn’t relevant to me right now, but it is great information - I think it’s terrific that you’re doing this.

Thank you for the info. If you get a temp regidency visa, how long you have to stay in Mexico to keep that visa and renew for the next one? I want to get it but want to stay it Mexico for part time.
@eternalspringcdmx Жыл бұрын
You don't have to stay in Mexico for any amount of time. Once you get it, you can come and go as you wish.

The requirements say you need bank/investment statements with a signed letter. Did they actually require that second part? Would be so much easier to just run pdf of my vanguard or bank statements.

Interesting. We were just going to print out the PDFs but will check now, thanks.

We were told the documents are enough. We'll see what happens at the actual meeting, I guess.

Does one proove the 40k savings over the course of their residency ? Or does one have to maintain that balance for about a year and after the year get said residency ?
@eternalspringcdmx2 жыл бұрын
Not sure yet, sorry. We're hyper-focused on this first try. I would imagine we still need some paperwork, but will look into this.

You need to prove that you've qualified when you apply for residency at the Méxican consulate, and the immigration office in México will likely ask for the documents the first time too. That's where it stops according to the regulations, but occasionally there will be a report of an immigration agent asking for the bank info when renewing temporary or converting to permanent. It's NOT a requirement listed in the regulations though.

I *just* (yesterday) converted my temporary residency to permanent. The procedure has gone through a few changes since I started initially - all for the good! Temporary residency on it's own doesn't allow you to work in México; permanent residency does ('work' is work sourced in México - if you're telecommuting outside the country you're good to go with a temporary residency, or even a visitors permit). Temporary residency allows you to drive a foreign plated car; permanent does not. There are banks that will open an account for you without having residency (Intercam is one). Make sure that your names are exactly the same on all of the documents you are going to submit. Marriage license too. Exactly the same. Have your bank change your name if it's not the same as your passport/other documents. Now that they don't give you an FMM when you arrive, you are going to need to print your FMM when you arrive in México City to continue the residency process. It's online, and you can watch Qroo Paul & Linda's youtube video about how to do it. You will need it when you go to immigration. Make sure the immigration officer in the airport understands you're going through the residency process as they need to enter you a different way in their computer - they should only grant you 30 days. When you hand them your passport, open it to the page with the visa from the Méxican consulate and also tell them. This is very important. Also, when you leave the country, stop in the immigration office at the airport to see what you need to do. You used to fill out an FMM and keep the top portion until you came back (reverse of what tourists do). I haven't flown out/in under the new procedures yet so I'm not quite sure how they're handling the no form thing. You can lose your residency status if their procedures aren't followed correctly. In addition to your CURP (like social security number as you said) you'll need an RFC number (this is a tax id). The CURP will be printed on your residency card, but the RFC will have to be applied for separately at a SAT office. See if your relocation person will help you with this as you can no longer do it online. Good luck!!!

@@eternalspringcdmx I forgot one other thing - as a resident you aren't subject to the visitor tax that airlines tack on to the price of your ticket to México. After your flight you can request a refund - the airline will want a copy of your residency card emailed to them along with the flight information. It's usually around $25, so it's worth asking for.
