@@ondrejvasak1054 Your both right. It was a Flop in terms of quality but a massive success in terms of ratings. The quality of BtE is so bad that Dave skips the episodes on rerun and their streaming service doesn't even have it available. Personally I've literally only seen it three times and that's counting watching via this channel. I normally watch the rest of RD at least 3 times a year. But BtE was a massive ratings hit, something like 3.2 million, which on Dave is huge. The Red Dwarf Premier got something like 4.7 million on BB2 in 1988 and that was a huge success at the time for BBC2. Getting over three million on a minor digital channel 20 years later was amazing. What this showed Dave was that there was still a very large audience for Red Dwarf and commissioning a proper season with a proper budget would be profitable. Dave themselves had never wanted to do a Season 9/mini-series. They were actually just after a reunion show. Naylor convinced them he could make a 3 episode mini-series for the same price. The lack of budget obviously forced the story back to Earth, the old sets were long gone by this point so it pretty much had to be shot on location rather than in a studio in locations that actually existed, so in contemporary Earth and not in a redressed power station. So the budget pretty much dictated the plot and meant that the three episodes had to be a three part story. RD doesn't do multi-episode stories very well. Its awful, but its also understandable that the budget just wasn't there at the time to do it properly.

Oh same here mate. I still regard this particular series (on top of S9) onwards as being among the new episodes, which truly is crazy considering how long ago it actually came out. Time really has just completely and utterly shot by it is both wonderful and absolutely heartbreaking. Thankfully though, it does show that the visual quality has totally held up. Visual quality for shows in Britain hasn’t really changed much since 2010 onwards, in all the right ways. It really shows how good things were back then. Sad that for some shows on the BBC and other channels however, the writing isn’t as good as it was back then. Visuals may have gotten a tiny bit better now for the budgets that are available, but the writing for most by equivalent hasn’t.

Doug Naylor had to fight to get the studio audience back, it wasn't in the budget and as a consequence there is only one location shot in the entire series, everything else (other than the models) was filmed in the studio. The set designers did an amazing job at redressing what is essentially three sets and a corridor to give the illusion not just of the entire ship but also various locations. Unfortunately, whilst it was all in the studio, not all of it was shot in front of the audience. The schedule for the series was incredibly tight, Craig was still signed on with Coronation street and had been given a sabbatical to film series 10; arranging this delayed Craig from even being able to sign up for S10 and as Dave wouldn't go head without him, Naylor didn't start writing the episodes until this was arranged. Naylor had general storylines that he had planned and some dialogue from the aborted Red Dwarf movie that he had spent a decade pitching, but he didn't have any complete episodes. To make matters worse for him, the lack of budget and time for location shooting meant that several proposed story lines had to be shelved. This meant a couple of the episodes were only partially wrote in time for the studio audience, and they were then completed in pick up week; it does show once you know; but not as much as other examples. Despite this S10 was the renaissance of Red Dwarf. Not quite the standard of the Golden age (S3-6) but up there and better than it had been for nearly two decades.

Seeing him now (ie Season Dave and onwards) just seems wrong because - he's an old man. Episode 3 of this season is one of my favourite Red Dwarf eps as a whole :) I do dislike how they didn't bring back Kochanski though, and made Rimmer a hologram again (albeit hardlight). Feels like they were playing a little too safe, really trying to recapture the feel of "the old days". While I did think Season 8 wasted its potential by having the crew in the brig, I did love that they were experimenting by bringing the crew back to life, and it could've been a really cool way to expand the world-building. Either way though, they did do a great job with reviving the show, so can't complain too much.

It's gonna be interesting to see how you two find the 'Dave' era of the show (incase you don't know 'Dave' is the name of a UK channel that is loosely associated with the BBC & primarily exists to show reruns of BBC comedy shows. Red Dwarf was their first attempt at making their own content, hence why BTE went SO meta and was asking for more episodes). People either love it or hate this era, I personally love it but admitly feels like it just missing something, not in a bad way though. Ohh regarding Krytons appearance I don't think they made him look older I think they just sadly didn't know how to do the makeup anymore. Wheather or not it was because of being out of practice, a different team or maybe just budget I don't know I just think that the Dave era of the show struggled to do Kryton's makeup properly. I think this series (for as much as I love it) is the worst he's ever looked and arguably even worse than series 2.

Even 'bad' Red Dwarf is good. That's one of the problems with a show like this - it started out strong (for a lot of people, season one is still arguably the best season) and it has a golden age around season 5 or 6 where it had become popular in the mainstream, too. It's a show that's been around long enough it constantly has to fight against the nostalgia inertia of it's entire previous history every time a new episode airs.
