Hi guys! We missed you so much. Here's a quick update on our unexplained/unplanned absence, and reviews for just a few of the movies we watched while we were away.
The Tomorrow War
The Premise: Time travelers from just 30 years in the future arrive in present day to plead for soldiers for their potentially world-ending war, and those sent to battle the blood-thirsty aliens are unlikely to return.
The Verdict: Nothing special, but a decent popcorn flick and plenty of action.
Directed by Chris McKay, starring Chris Pratt, JK Simmons, Betty Gilpin, Sam Richardson; find it on Amazon Prime
Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead
The Premise: Following a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, a group of mercenaries take the ultimate gamble, venturing into the quarantine zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted.
The Verdict: Dumb but it has Tig Notaro going for it.
Directed by Zack Snyder, starring Dave Bautista; find it on Netflix
Cruella
The Premise: Disney’s Dalmatian-obsessed villain gets an origin story.
The Verdict: Visually stunning and loaded with great performances from Emma Stone and Emma Thompson, I’d have no problem recommending this if it was a stand-alone film, but as a prequel to 101 Dalmatians, it doesn’t quite get to where it’s going.
Directed by Craig Gillespie, starring Emma Stone, Emma Thompson; find it on Disney Plus (for an additional fee)
In The Heights
The Premise: Bodega owner Usnavi dreams about a better life outside of Washington Heights in the middle of a sweaty summer blackout.
The verdict: Culturally rich and exceptionally vibrant, this is a modern musical rooted in hope.
Directed by Jon M. Chu, starring Anthony Ramos, Corey Hawkins, Leslie Grace, Melissa Barrera; find it in theatres and on VOD
A Quiet Place 2
The Premise: Immediately following the events of the first film, mom Evelyn leads her daughter, son, and newborn baby away, exposing them to the dangers of the outside world, in an attempt to bring their solution to any remaining survivors.
The Verdict: A surprisingly satisfying sequel, the film manages to recapture some of what made the first one so special while expanding its universe.
Directed by John Krasinski, starring Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe, Cillian Murphy; find it on Amazon Prime
Luca
The Premise: On the Italian Riviera, an unlikely but strong friendship grows between a human being and a sea monster disguised as a human.
The Verdict: A sweet and beautiful tale of friendship, with a welcome taste of Italy and beautifully drawn animation, Luca is a delightful little film, is perhaps a minor one in the Pixar lineup.
Directed by Enrico Casarosa, with voice work by Jacob Tremblay, Maya Rudolph, Jim Gaffigan, Sacha Baron Cohen
Black Widow
The Premise: In this Marvel prequel, Black Widow is confronted by her past as a spy and the people she once considered family.
The Verdict: Sean thought it was good, I thought it was convoluted and boring. Certainly not Marvel’s best but an okay stand-alone if you’re desperate for some super hero action.
Directed by Cate Shortland, starring Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Rachel Weisz; find it on Disney Plus (for an additional fee) and in theatres

Yay I'm so glad to see you guys back!!! OH wow I'm so sorry you had to go through that, I can totally relate as I also have an autoimmune condition that causes growths on my thyroid, but man all over your body that is really rough. You are so strong. I can't believe you still came on to people's channels to comment during that. I loved the Tomorrow War, I thought it was so good! I would definitely watch it again.

We are so glad to see you back at it and in the recovery process. Surgeries are never fun, and movies were a huge part of my (Jess') personal recovery after health battles, too. Thank goodness for the silver lining of having so many movies come to you at home in this last year! :) We haven't seen everything you've reviewed, yet, and some of your thoughts may deter our viewing a little longer, lol. I will say that for Black Widow, at least, it was a fun movie, but not necessary. It would have been nice for her to be the main character in her own movie, but oh well!

Omgosh it's so wonderful to have you back!!! We've missed you so much!!! ♡ We also really loved Cruella but felt like it would have been fine on its own without needing to tie into the animated version, especially given that it kind of wrecked the timeline! Jakii loved In The Heights so much and is so glad you loved it too! I have such a hard time understanding lyrics so I spent half the time not understanding what was happening xD "And now the ITALIANS have feelings!" 😂😂😂 Luca was super cute but we agree, it felt pretty minor compared to the other Pixar films. Also, we haven't gotten to see Quiet Place II yet but are so excited to see it! Also we thought we wouldn't enjoy Black Widow but we love her "sister" and are so excited to see what all they do with her! We're set to go watch Space Jam this weekend xD I'm scared to watch it 😬 but Jakii said that is my inner-boomer kicking in 😂😂😂 Its been so fun getting to watch this and we are so happy that you're back but hoping that you're continuing to take care of yourself as you keep healing! ♡♡♡ 🥰

Welcome back! Glad you are on the mend! Haven't seen The Tomorrow War yet but will definitely watch it sometime soon. I love time travel movies, despite the paradoxes that almost always exist. Haven't seen Army of the Dead. Hadn't heard of it, in fact. We loved Cruella. But I agree... it doesn't fit with 101 Dalmatians. The Cruella character in Cruella would not behave the way Cruella does in the Dalmatians movies. Luca isn't one of the best Pixar movies ever. But we enjoyed it. Haven't seen Quiet Place 2 yet but can't wait to. Loved the first one. Liked Black Widow a lot. Florence Pugh was great!

The Tomorrow War sounds like an decent show, but our question is.. if these Aliens knew what the hell was going down on Earth, they would avoid it like the plague, thinking we're just going to wipe ourselves out in the next 500 years!! LOLOLOL We heard Cruella was an ok movie, and sounds like they had some challenges making the storyline fit. Luca... we laughed when Jay said "Italians have feelings!" We aren't into the Marvel/DC Universe, so we would pass on those types of movies. Fun review guys and stay safe and lots of love to you guys. 💖🌛😘

Oh it's so good to have you back. Jay I'm sorry you had to go through that. I can't even imagine the pain you must have endured. Well I have to say you look really good. The Tomorrow Wars was one I enjoyed because I tend to drool over Chris Pratt. I also enjoyed a Quiet Place 2.

Yes, unfortunately I'm always needing surgeries to keep things in check but due to COVID, my treatment was a little wonky. Eventually it was bad enough to be considered an emergency so I could see my doctor (at the Jewish hospital in Montreal) and have surgery right away - otherwise, they weren't booking surgery, and that was tough. However, because there were no ORs, I had to have all 3 surgeries while AWAKE and that was awful. Not just feeling them cutting out my skin and tissue, but smelling them cauterize everything too - yuck.
