Be prepared. It always takes longer than expected especially with shortages. It's stressful. Multiple decisions and set backs. Just roll with it. Eventually it works out so be patient.

Thank you, Derek, for sharing about your OCD. I too am on Prozac since 1999. A life changer for me. When I heard you mention the light switch, I paid close attention, because that was a big challenge for me for many years. I too love the number 11, but my ritual was different. I had to have the right face and name in my mind at the moment I left the light on or off, so the switch would go up and down repeatedly before I could "relax" and step away. This ritual poured over into most everything I did. I'm 65 years old now and grateful to have much of that behind me. THANK YOU FOR SHARING! It is comforting to have comrads.

One tip. When my dad built the house we are in. (Just my parents and I live in it, my siblings live away from here) My oldest brother when home weekends took photos of all stages of the build and made a photo book with the photos and each photo dated. It is a great bit of history for family to look back on and future generations to see. Maybe ask family members to do it or the builders. I am 39 my dad finally had his wish to build a house on a half acre he bought off his uncle in the 1980s god rest his soul. He started in about 2002 and finished it 2007 or 8. He got someone in to do the foundations. My oldest brother came down most weekends to help my dad build the house. My parents would save money, dad would build then stop until they saved more. That is why it took years for the house to be built. My dad did the plans, it took over a year for plans to be approved as back then planning laws in my area were stricter. My dad built the house almost 90% on his own. He got one of his brothers in to make sure electricity and wiring was up to code. He got help with plastering. He even built a lot of the furniture and our staircase. I love it here, it is like a piece of heaven in the Irish countryside. If we did not move here I know I never would have learned to run and love it despite my area being full of hills. I adore being surrounded by nature. Having a wood across the road, cows in fields near by.

I agree. I’ve built 2 houses now and it can be very stressful if your builder doesn’t communicate with you very well. There are soooooo many decisions to be made but you’ll get exactly what you want in the end. I’m never leaving this house now! ✌🏼💜🇨🇦

This is exactly what I was thinking. We’ve built 3 we could check on and the one we could not was in Montana. (Spec house). Brand new house and the builder was terrible! The only one that was good was the 2nd home. We moved into this one a year and a half ago. Wouldn’t use these ever again! I hope your Dad can go by and check on it. Hope the best for y’all!

My Mom & Stepdad built their dream house over 30+ years ago and haven't regretted it yet 👍❣️ My Stepdad is a RN & a General Contractor, so he was the one that actually built their house! My Mom drew it out on Graph Paper, then my Stepdad made it into BLUEPRINTS!!! It was a great learning experience!!! Unfortunately, I wasn't in a part of my life where I was in a relationship with my Mom at the time, but I learned everything about it through my brothers!!! They both helped when they could👍! My older Brother lives in California so obviously helped more. My younger brother, lived here in Hawai'i, and could ONLY help during school breaks & Summer...but he did QUITE A BIT OF WORK when he was there!!! The house is built into a mountain and is a 3 story house and is HUGE!!! Not sure about the square footage, but I am sure that it's MASSIVE for ONLY 2 PEOPLE & several cats!!! But it's GORGEOUS!! I hope you have a house that becomes a HOME🏡💗❣️ 💞ALOHA FROM HAWAI'I 💞🌹 LYSSA 🌹

In all fairness, there is a lot more to do in Hawaii than surf and many people who live there don’t surf at all. But it’s all about finding our niche. And growing up in Utah and having more family close by, especially with children, is a very important niche, too. I no longer live in the town I love the most, but I am 3 miles away from majority of my family and that’s become super important to me. I wish you guys the best and I’m glad you can enjoy both worlds. That’s special.
