I'm sure it must be weird trying to balance "this is a realistic, behind-the-scenes look" with "annnnd let's not get too personal, mmkay?", but I do appreciate the insights into how y'all are working together, the challenges you're facing, and how you deal with them. Also, big props to Morley for being super comfortable admitting he's made mistakes (it's what I would totally expect from him, but still laudable!), especially with how he works/listens to Eden - the world definitely needs more men being role models that way.

Would be pretty interesting and fun if for (not every episode) you guys did a small tour or just showed any changes that youve done to the van

That’s a great idea! We’re trying to show it through the camera angle but a quick handheld camera tour would definitely add to the video.

I know if my ole lady and I tried to do this, there would be many cuts and edits because our personalities are completely different when it comes to doing things together. I am OCD it's gotta be done right the first time and has to be of quality. She's more like if it's good enough I'm okay with it. I appreciate you guys sharing your life experience. I've watched a lot of your woodworking videos and it's inspired me.

One of the things I always tried to do is find free things that we can do as a family. This is really fun for families on a tight budget. There are so many free things that you can do and share with people around the country. It takes a little work to find them but so worth it.

A very strange pivot for the channel but will reserve judgement for now and see how it all unfolds I guess
@justpassingbyy
@justpassingbyy Жыл бұрын
It's more a pivot in their lifestyle and not really for the channel primarily. I think they would be going through with this even if they stopped creating content for KZbin. The content won't be for everyone but this is what they want to do. I personally find this van retrofit stuff more interesting than another video about turning free wood into a $2000 table. I also always liked seeing Eden in videos so it's good to see more of her.
@TylerSmith-sl2cf

I like the new content so far! I will never live the van life (just like I will never make furniture from found wood), but I subscribe here to see cool, well-produced videos of the creative process - including planning, on-the-fly changes, and design compromises on the way to an end product.

Great video, this was my favorite one so far! Regarding the electrical usage concerns, I have been working on modeling some related stuff for my house. Keeping Volts, Amps, Watts, and Joules clear in your mind is the key here (Watt-hours and kilowatt-hours are the same "type" of unit as Joules -- energy, just with a conversion factor) . Here is some real world data to illustrate the differences, my kitchen fridge is rated for 6 Amps peak at 120 Volts-AC, meaning that it COULD consume roughly 720 Watts peak (P=IV=6*120). According to the "energy star" label it requires about 502 kWh per year to operate or an average power of only 57 watts! (=502/365/24*1000) This average power is what is more important for modeling your solar / battery needs.

Have you guys thought about tankless propane water heaters? I know Home Depot has one that is pretty small.

I can’t speak for every van owner; but my brother did a similar conversion and I know he absolutely wouldn’t mind if you saw him in a supermarket car park and asked to see inside. I reckon most Van life folk will be pretty proud of their work 😊

Instead of a water heater. U can get a bucket heater. It’s like an extension cord with a sealed heater element on its end. Then any container u already own n carry becomes the tank. U only need hot water when u need it. 27:53
@CodeOptimism
@CodeOptimism Жыл бұрын
There's something you may not have considered regarding hot water and electrical. For my RV, I added a simple circulation loop of PEX between a tankless water heater, and teed into the existing propane-heated tank (a SharkBite one-way check valve before the tee, pretty easy). The tiny cheap "Yoosoo" 12V 500mA pump is *plenty* of flow to trigger the tankless, maintaining pressure in the entire system is obviously done by a separate larger pump. (I think that tiny pump uses NPSC threads - straight - which is genuinely compatible with NPT - tapered - but you need enough threads on the female connector, i.e. use a supply line with a flat rubber washer, not the conical rubber... the conical one is too bulbous, not enough thread engagement... it's been years of 24/7 circulation and 0 leaks... as long as you pipe dope it and don't overtighten and break the plastic, pump works perfectly.) I also use an "infrared" tankless, but on its lowest setting. If you get the absolute weakest / smallest tankless electric heater you can find (do they even make those in < 120V? maybe black tubing you can put outside for solar heating makes more sense without an inverter/shore-power setup, but I digress), with a simple circulation loop and tiny pump you can have very hot water available all the time (since it circulates to get hotter), if it's only needed in small quantities. You don't even need a "tank" you can just use the capacity of the actual PEX loop, for a quick wash-up or something, it's kind of nice! But you could easily add a bucket for greater capacity. Might be overkill... might require a little automation... might require a tankless that doesn't have an annoying beep when at its maximum temperature. I have dozens of innovations like this in my RV, I need to put them online. 😞 Maybe a quick blog, I don't have time to do videos. 😬

A small bucket for emergency toilet is a great idea maybe keep a few larger doggy bags and some of those paper shavings from the pet store would make clean up super quick and sanitary Put a couple handfuls of the shavings in the baggy to soak up the place the baggy in the bucket to go in I think there may even be a fold up to go toilet on Amazon with a seat lol

Nalgene bottle is gonna be the main 90% of the time. Seals well, blends in when you dump it in a public restroom. Induction stove actually does not use as much as you think. At full tilt yeah it's gonna pull 1500w, but that instantly burns your food. I never crank mine past 50%. Plus it's only on for 15 minutes at a time maybe twice a day. Water heater, yeah, takes a lot of power. However you can replace the heating element with a DC one and turn it on when the battery is full and you have surplus solar. The tank stays warm for quite a while. There's an app called "cut sheet calculator", it's good.

Thank you for the tips! We’re still going back and forth between full electric and propane - this definitely pushes the needle back towards full electric.

@@MorleyKertI even have a microwave and toaster oven I use often on just 700w of solar. It's ok to draw a TON of power as long as it's for a short time. Reheating a breakfast bagel takes 3% of my 200ah battery. So one bagel costs about 30 minutes of solar time.

Mmm...wool insulation? People who use this in their houses, to be more "eco" friendly, soon find out when moths have got in. The moths love eating the stuff, then laying their eggs, and so the cycle begins. Problem with moths, & butterflies (as gardeners will know), is they can just slide through the smallest of gaps that you leave. Plenty of sealant/caulk should sort it out & pray none of the little pests get in first. All looking good. Maybe fast forward some clips, you choose, for your KZbin viewers, so they can see the work that you complete each time? Double, triple thinking yourselves is usual, it'll all work out in the end. Then the infamous video will arrive one day - "If we had to do this van conversion again, what we'd do differently"...lol. It'll be terrific and think of the unknown adventures and memories you'll be creating together as Mr & MRS Kert!!! Best wishes from Wales, UK.
