Specifically, "xiao" means "small". You'll see it a lot in nicknames, especially for children. Gyokuyou's daughter is called Xiaoling, but her name is really Lingshi.

@@adicandra9940 Similar in intent, but not strictly in meaning. Xiao is an actual word, and when used in a name, it functions as a diminutive (to denote smallness, etc). The Japanese -chan, on the other hand, has no meaning of its own. It's an honorific (similar to Mr., Miss, etc), but it can also function as a diminutive. Xiao, when prefixed to a name, turns the name into a nickname. The Japanese chan suffix, on the other hand, being honorifics, doesn't usually turn names into nicknames.

Just for context since I've noticed that a lot of reactors don't understand the concept behind the rear palace system (which is understandable as it is very culturally different from what we are used to), but the fact that concubines are princesses or nobility is a big clue that this is also a political position. Even the European monarchies back in the day made alliances by marrying their daughters off, and this is much the same thing, except it's all to the same person. And yes, the guy at the end was the emperor. Remember how it was mentioned that the concubines were supposed to be chaste and loyal to the emperor, and thus should not be alone with another man? The fact that this man is alone with Gyokuyou should tell you a lot about his status.

This is just my speculation but I think Jinshi and the Emperor knew. They could have denied the military officer's request for Lady Fuyou but they agreed to it. Something about the Emperor just tells me he isn't an awful guy. Also the military guy was shown stopping the army from wiping out the village when the soldiers thought they had been poisoned in episode 2. MaoMao telling Jinshi that it was a great thing that the village was not lost may have swayed him into being on the military guys side when he asked for lady Fuyou.

The Emperor definitely knew, dude is capable enough to rule an Empire then a small trick such as feigning to mess up your dance routine or acting wouldn't pass him. But I guess he knows that lady Fuyou does not wish to be one of his concubine and by "gifting" her to the military officer that loves her, the Emperor will gain reputation as someone who could reward his men generously, while at the same time gaining the loyalty of that said officer.

In the light novels, it was outright stated that the emperor valued his ability to reign in certain parts of his command more than his military prowess.

Another detail that helps prove the "Concubine Fuyou was faking" story is that she started off dancing on the North wall which was also when the officer saved the village during the accidental poisoning of troops, but after he had fought the battle and then came toward the palace from the East to collect her, she moved her dancing to that wall.

That was a very wonderful love story between Fuyou and the childhood friend. Morgan is correct about there being underline dark tone with this show. I wonder if that element will get more explored in the future.

Three comments: 1. Either Emperor Kin or Eunuchs are allowed into Rear Palace 2. Gaoshun is pretty cool and highly rated by Maomao she questioned his being a Eunuch 3. I suspect the Emperor and a Jinshi know Fuyou’s situation and play along avoiding any complications XiaoMao means little cat or kitten, heh heh.

As a side note you can make a eunuch by just removing the "reel" and leaving the "fishing pole" the person can still "go fishing" but no babies made. Second side note, the VA for Maomao also did Tanya in the Saga of Tanya the Evil and next episode she gets to let Tanya come out to play.
