So, quick thing before I watch the video! If they address this later on, my bad, I just can’t resist the urge to ramble lol. As a watercolor artist (who knows about an embarrassing amount of brand info lmao) the watercolors Emily and Daidus chose for this round are a little different from other brands, like Winsor Newton or Sennelier. I’m no expert or anything, I just had a fixation. Kuretake Gansai Tambi (which is the large pan set they have!) are what’s known as “gansai” paints, which tend to be shinier when dried, easier to lift off of the page (and thus harder to layer depending on technique), and are traditionally made with animal glues instead of gum arabic, though the Kuretake brand is I believe using a vegan substitute. Gansai paints were also originally intended to be used on a different type of paper as well, which is part of why they have some of those differing properties. Some have said they’re similar to gouache in certain applications, but I’m not entirely sure about that. In my experience, they’ve just had a certain texture to them that’s different from paints that lay totally flat. Almost thicker, or slightly jelly-like? The reason the pans are so large but the paint is so shallow is because the traditional brushes for that medium are much bigger. A half-pan used in other pan sets is about half the size, maybe less, and filled to the top. All of this to say, the Kuretake are great paints! I love them and use them like my other watercolors all the time. But some aspects about that might have impacted their experience, good or bad, and I just thought that might interest some people! A Japanese brand I think might have given a more similar experience to other watercolor brands would have been Holbein, or even Sakura Koi depending on budget. Gansai are kind of in their own category. But I’m hyped either way!

His artstyle really lends itself to other mediums than digital. Mediums like water colour, oils, etc. really lend itself to "messy" applications. It's a nice contrast to Emily who has a cleaner and more precise style, so her style really lends itself well to things like markers, pencils, and digital.

I love how Daidus colours his art. You may think it's "messy", but it's really beautiful! It's full of colours, energy, he really knows how to make his art vibrant, even though he just wings it. It's not a problem if you wing it when you colour, especially if it turns out as beautiful as this every time! Besides, even if it doesn't turn out how he wanted it to be, it's fine, because we can learn through our mistakes! You're truly too harsh on yourself, Daidus. Yours and Emily's art aren't the same : Emily's is more "clean", there's not much exploration with colours (not a negative thing, it's absolutely beautiful too!), and she lines her art more! So it gives more a digital art feel. Whereas, Daidus's gives more a traditional/ impressionist vibe. Both are absolutely stunning and great! You guys are awesome!! I love seeing your traditional art journey, and it's always a pleasure to watch your videos on Friday! I can't wait to see your next video, and see how you two are improving! Spilled Ink also inspires me to draw, and I learn a lot too, despite being a traditional artist myself!

I don't use watercolors, im a digital artist. But I've watched enough kasey gold to know that watercolors are all about layering colors together to create different effects. It's slow because you can very easily spread the paint too far. You also can have fun controlling the amount of water to change the paint concentration and make gradients! Also always do lineart last 😭 different watercolors react with lineart. You'll get bleed no matter what. Also with watercolor you want to do large brush strokes as it'll spread the watercolor more, smaller brush strokes may cause streaks when dry. I haven't been in art classes in a long while but watching this is reminding me of things I learned 😂

General watercolor tips (as someone who's kind of okay at watercolor) Yeah, watercolor is about knowing when to wait and when to blend. Blending is easiest when the paint is wet. I saw with Daidus' piece that he just layered the darker blue of the ocean on top of the lighter blue because the lighter blue wasn't really wet anymore, so it looks kind of muddy in some parts. The drier the brush or the less water you put in the paint color, the more opaque the color will be. You can dry your brush with a paper towel a bit before dipping it in the color. If you want the color more transparent, add more water. If you want to use the mixing plate, mix colors a little at a time and test them out before you paint with them. Try to squeeze the water out of the brushes to make full use of the color you can mix with. I don't think it matters too much if you start painting the background or the main subject, just be careful that the colors don't start mixing together. Do NOT leave your watercolor brushes sitting in the water. It ruins/bends the form of the hairs, and the hairs will start sticking all over the place in the future. It also ruins the glue that connects the hairs to the handle, so be careful of that. Just lay the brushes you're not using to the side on a paper towel or something. Remember to change your water cups occasionally, or else the color of the rinsing water will affect your colors 😛 Everyone did good with setting a base color before getting into details. The details you guys put are very precise. Daidus' dynamic use of color is very cool, gives the painting more life. Very watery and flowy I like how Emily uses different shades of pink on different parts of the bear, gives the bear more of a 3D effect even if she is using only 1-2 colors. They look like a Care Bear 😂 How Illy drew the emotions and her overall precision with the details are so good. Her more muted color palette works well too. I think everyone did a great job. Everyone's pieces look really nice ❤

You could as well see it as an opportunity for all of you. E.g. to prevent a burn out while using the tool to speed up. I mean you art is your work and of course it might hurt in some way to follow this AI topic. But for me as a developer I love the development and the evolution in AI code generated code-snipes. Or just say in machine learning and some math - since today we don't have an fully generative AI. AI can makes things faster, the way of working might change. And there are many unanswered questions about ownership. But e.g. in case of Stable Diffusion you can easily setup an private AI and you could train it in private as your own private AI production tool. Just vor yourself. But I also can understand the pressure and of course the down feelings or depression of many of you guy's. Just keep in mind it is not only art it is as well language, text and coding and it is and will be more then helpful in medical ways.😉
@Maringuely

@@dennism.8792 I dont think any artist wants to be told how AI is actually better and good for them right now, when it was (and still is) trained on art and writing that was stolen and used without artist's consent and now is threatening their livelihoods and opportunities. I'm sure AI will be plenty helping in coding and medicine, so it should stay there and not invade into other areas. Defending AI so valiantly like this to a person who was just venting how frustrating and depressing AI makes alot of artists feel is a weird choice and definitely not as encouraging as I think you tried to make it seem
@dennism.8792
@dennism.8792 Ай бұрын
@Maringuely well, and it will not end. Since if you train AI with AI results, at least with images it get worse. But, your answer implicated another problem, I'm the big companies would paying the artists it would be a win-win, but instead they try to "sneaky" change there policy e.g. Adobe or did use public domain stuff. Other areas will be used as well, e.g. Code-Snippes, but since developers share there code for free - they don't care. Protect your art, it will be needed. No AI will be a replacement, at least not at this state. The development is quite fast, but as long as it is only machine learning it will never invent something good on its own. If we jump out of the generative generation then it might get interesting and we might reach new levels of creativity in all directions.

I just wanna point out a few things about the materials in this video: Kuretake watercolors aren't like normal watercolors. They're more opaque and reactivate quicker. This makes them harder to layer with and makes them almost like a gouache/watercolor hybrid. For people used to normal watercolor this can be a bit frustrating to work with but they're good paints, just different. With watercolor, the type and quality of paper is VITAL to how well your artwork turns out and how easy it is to work with. Cold pressed is by far the easier option for most painting techniques as it is much more forgiving and allows for easier water control. If you like working with very small sections at a time and not too many big washes (like realistic botanicals), hot pressed might be more for you. In terms of brushes, it's really a matter of personal preference. I find the Escoda Perla series to be the best brushes that exist, beating most high end red sable hair brushes even though they're synthetic and very affordable. But it is really up to personal preference so I can't give much advice on this. If possible, go to a shop that allows you to try them out with clear water so you can feel what it feels like before buying. That all said, please don't leave your brushes standing in water. It's perfectly fine to let them dry out because watercolor will dissolve later anyway so just rinse them after you're done painting and it's fine. The bristles of watercolor brushes tend to be more delicate than those of acrylic or oil brushes so leaving them resting on their bristles in water is just bad for them. Also tip: use two cups of water, one dirty one for when you wanna rinse the paint out of your brush and one you keep clean for introducing water into the paints or onto the painting. That'll make things much easier to work with. The rest is just a matter of getting to know the medium. Learn about the wetness of the paper and the brush and how those interact. How the thickness of the paint and the wetness of the paper interact. Everything from wet on wet to wet on dry to dry brushing to intentionally creating cauliflowering for texture or using granulation. Watercolor is my absolute favorite medium ever because of how quick and versatile it is.

I take watercolour lessons but uh, I recommend always having tissue in your left hand so if you make a mistake you can immediately take it out with the tissue before the pigments go through the paper. You can try having a towel to put the brushes in to dry it out, there's a cool technique I really like where you dual-wield brushes, one dry one and one with your chosen colour. The method is called pulling colour so it keeps a short blur and gradient, you place the watercolour down then get the dry brush and lightly brush on the long edge and it pulls the colour. You should also buy some masking fluid! It's really cool to play around with, It is a latex and rubber base liquid, and you shake it to get the colour so you can see it on paper then when it dries out and you paint over it, it stays perfectly white- if you try this, you much buy the correct eraser, you can probably search it up but it's a rough textured eraser. Always work from lightest to darkest! If you ever make a mistake, you can lighten the colour by getting a wet brush and scrubbing on that part of the drawing and it will get lighter- there is a scrubber brush but it's not necessary. I hope you guys enjoy watercolour, the elegant touch of seeing the paper is so pretty to me. It's really colour seeing you guys use watercolours, Watercolour is my favourite medium :3

I watched Emirichu last when the childhood crush 2 came out then i saw daidus and watched a few videos of him AND THEN got hooked on other stuff. Now I'm in college and was like what the f did happen all these years!? (IT WAS LIKE 4-5 YEARS!!!) But now i really enjoy this chill space of spilled ink and i had a big amount of content to invest in. Big thanks from Germany you two!

Just want to say that each time I watch your videos, I always feel inspired to draw and usually end up sketching or painting with copic markers at the same time. I am far from being a great artist despite drawing for maybe 10 years, and I always stuck to traditional mediums because that's what I enjoyed. I was so torn between the pressure of being forced to draw digitally cause everyone was doing it. But seeing you guys starting from scratch on watercolors, copics, or other physical mediums in this new channel and genuinely having fun learning really encouraged me to keep on practicing and doing what I love. So thank you, Emily and Daidus! I hope you continue to learn a lot throughout your artistic journey, just like I have been doing with your videos on this channel!

Guys, it’s so valid and makes complete sense for you to get tired after years and years of doing the same thing! And I’d love to hear your honest thoughts on doing youtube, if you wanna make a video about it, make it! It could even help some people who think they wanna be a youtube artist but don’t fully understand everything that comes with that.

The fact I'm going through burn out right now when it's almost my mid semester assessment (I'm an art student) and then this video comes out, I feel comforted knowing the artists I look up to can also can get tired and burnt out. I know realistically of course they can, but when you're in a rut you tend to beat yourself up or compare yourself to others. So I'm feeling better about having this reminder.

With regards to fast vs slow, I think watercolor can do both! Traditional watercolor with layering requires a lot of time, but you can also do plein air fast watercolor sketches while traveling, etc. Also! Chinese watercolor is on rice paper so layering is minimized (otherwise the paper can rip more easily) and water control is very important - therefore it feels a bit faster but obvi those huge detailed paintings you see in museums take a long time.

Additional watercolor heads up: It helps a ton to swatch your colors! The Kuretake Gansai Tambi set (the big one they have in the video!) has a way to do it on the inside of the lid, but it’s also great to do it on a sample of whatever paper you’re going to use. Since watercolors are such a transparent medium, oftentimes it’s difficult to tell the difference between, say, a blue or purple, or a black and dark green, etc etc. The minute tone differences even between reds (like how they look with a ton of water vs used thickly) can best be shown off through swatches. Also it’s very therapeutic lol. Saying this because upon rewatching, Daidus wasn’t sure if there was a darker blue lol. It goes for basically any medium like this, but *especially* inks and watercolors.

Hi there! I've been so excited to see y'all paint in watercolor! A bit of a tip from an amateur, one way I found water color easier to deal with was painting with a brush that holds the water on a plastic container connected to said brush- I think they're called travel water color brushes or water color pens. I love using those for the bigger/ medium areas and I can control the water usage better. Then I clean up my painting with a normal smaller tip water color brush. Also, just like markers, the type of paper you use makes the big difference with your painting. I recently heard from a professional that sometimes you can use very cheap paints but make them look expensive if you splurge on good water color paper. I tried it out and honestly, he had a point ~ Anyway, so happy to see y'all painting in my favorite medium! 😊❤

Especially when the weather is hazardous, we get a lot of snow and I CAN NOT drive in it, I'm too fckin scared. I visited Toronto to see friends for the first time last year, and went again this year and took the GO trains to Niagara, HOLY FUCK I LOVE TRAINS AND SUBWAYS. Like, I'm SO MAD we don't have this crap where I live, and I'm unemployed on disability, so I can;t even MOVE out there for a job! I completely understand Ily's love of the trains
