Hi guys, a shop owner and mechanic here, it’s sounds like the high pressure pump in the fuel system is failing, a well known issue with the Ford Heavy Duty diesel engines, you can thank Ford engineering for that. Of course proper testing has to be done before that can be called. I have read comments suggesting to not tell one shop what another shop found in their diagnostic process, that’s backwards. A good shop is going to have knowledgeable tech staff working there and can quickly discern if the previous diagnostic sounds correct or if it is a waste of time going in that direction. Try doing that when you visit your doctor. Time is money holds true for mechanical service. Try finding a shop that you trust and stick to them, in the long run it will make your life a bit easier. I’m in my 70’s and have traveled the life road you’re on and can say this, it may be expensive to fix this time but you’ll figure it out together, then just move on and count your blessings because you have each other and enjoy your life.

@@davidanderson8469 the CP3 doesn’t grenade like the CP4.2, but it is also not capable of providing the high pressure that Ford utilizes in today’s 6.7. And of course, it is too large to fit in the small space the CP4 fits in.
Look into CPX pump, it will fit where Ford placed the CP4 pump. Last thing you need in back country is a fuel system failure that destroys all that comes in contact with fuel with metal chards. Total repair cost after cp4 pump failure ranges from 10-15,000. Worth checking out differentboptions that will work with Ford engines.

PLEASE READ THIS WARNING, IT WILL HELP YOU..................... My Dad used to work for the company that sinks the big fuel tanks in the ground at the gas stations, he has told me countless times to NEVER EVER fill up your car/truck or what ever your driving when ever the big gas truck is there filling the tanks under ground. He said if you see them doing that just go to the next gas station or if you can't then wait at least an hour before you fill up your rig {What ever your rig is} The reason this is, is because when they fill up those tanks under ground, it stirs up all the sediment that is in the bottom of those tanks, rust, sand & what ever else falls into those tanks when they hook up to the ground valve to fill the tanks. Maybe this is what has caused you to have your problems, do you fill up when you see the big Gas Tankers in the station filling up the under ground tanks? So once you get your truck fixed remember what I've told you & hopefully you'll read this note... Today's diesel is almost the same consistency as gas. It's dryer than it was 20+ years ago. Meaning it doesn't lubricate like it used to. This is the reason why today's diesel engines have so many fuel related issues. Add a quart of either atf or 2 stroke oil to a tank during full up. I usually add 1qrt every other top off. Local driving, I only let it use down to half a tank. Long trips I'll let it get down to a quarter of a tank
@nogarider1846 Жыл бұрын
When I hear metal shavings in the fuel system on a Ford diesel my first my first thought is CP4 high-pressure fuel pump failure. If that's the case then the dealer price of 12K is close to normal for a dealer, but a local shop may be able to do it for less and that is where I would go regardless. The reason the CP4 failure is so costly is that have to replace the fuel injectors, fuel rails, fuel pump, fuel lines, tank and filters, and housing because the shavings can be in all of these parts and it's hard to guarantee they can get all of it out. The reason the shavings are in all these parts is that the fuel pump creates more flow and pressure than the engine needs and there is a relief valve that sends that unneeded fuel back to the tank along with any shavings. The CP4 fuel pumps have been doing this for over 10 years in Ford and Ram started using them I think in 2019 on the Cummings. Then CP4 problem started showing up in RAM and they announced a recall to replace the CP4 with a CP3 however, Ford just kept blaming owners for using dirty diesel. But one can't blame Ford for not issuing a recall, RAM only had to recall 250K trucks, can you imagine the cost of having to recall several years' worth of trucks. RAM may also have an additional incentive because, with some of their CP4 failures the fuel pump has seized and broken the CAM gear connection and when that happens there is a good possibility it will also need a new engine. I enjoy your videos and I wish you the best of luck!.
@brianklump11 ай бұрын
Did your CP4 blow out? Sounds like it. Those Bosch units are known to do this, that's why RAM rolled back to CP3 and GM switched to Denso. They also make kits you can install so that if it happens it catches all the injection pump parts before they nuke your entire fuel system again.

This is quite a common thing for Ford. Usually the fuel pump goes completely out and that’s what puts metal shavings in your filter and they also go through your high pressure fuel rail. That Bosch pump is a huge failure spot for most diesels on the road. Cummins even recommends adding diesel kleen to every tank of fuel so the pump stays lubricated and can prevent this from happening. Or Fors could just be trying to rip you off which they’re also known to do. Best of luck.

After consult w mechanic, was informed that MAP sensor had to be re-set.... meaning the pickup (a Ford w almost a million miles) should be stopped, shut off for awhile, and upon restart, the MAP sensor would be happily reset.☺️

This is one of the reasons I drive a 2006 Diesel Land Cruiser with no electronics and no pollution controls to be found. It also has a manual 5 speed transmission which, in low range, could pull a stump out of the ground. Modern vehicles are reliant on too many electronics. Too much to fail, too often. Not too sure the USA got Land Cruiser diesels but in Australia where I live, there are many and remain a very popular vehicle for towing or recreation. Mine just turned 300,000 kilometers and has never failed.

For the Hummer, you might need to replace the ignition switch for your phantom draw. You showed that the key got stuck, and you had to tilt the wheel. Ignition switches are notorious for failing. (the electrical switch portion).

Remember a while back I commented and said your maintenance schedule was not good? Fuel filters every 10k and you avoid this problem. P0093 is low pressure fuel system code. Replace the low pressure pump, clean the tank, flush the lines and replace the high pressure pump and left hand fuel rail. No need to replace the injectors unless it’s DEF contamination or lots of metal. All that stuff you changed out was not the problem. Lots of times the metal in the fuel is very hard to see and you need a flashlight to really see it.

Shavings in the fuel filter is a known issue with the CP4 fuel pump. A disaster prevention kit should have been installed to catch the shavings before they contaminated the entire fuel system.

It happened to me too, my truck went on limp mode few times until it needed a tow, they found tiny particles metal shavings in the tank, they told me the same thing that I needed a new main pump, $8-12k, I opted for the less repair $2.5k cost of cleaning the fuel lines, tank and replace new filter. The truck ran fine after that. I don't know if it give the same problem because I sold the truck two years later.

On the Hummer battery issue, take a meter and check across each fuse, with everything off you should find one drawing current. Find the circuit it covers and on that circuit, you should find your issue.

I used to run diesels exclusively. For my personal use I’ve gone back to gas. There is nothing that I do that requires the power level of a modern diesel. We haul around an Arctic Fox on a Ford F350 Dually. It’s gas. Yeah, it revs a little more, gets 9-10 mpg with the camper on, where the diesel got 12. But we don’t have any of those expensive diesel problems to deal with. And before anyone goes and jumps on the “it’s a ford, by what ever else brand”, they all have issues, and expensive ones at that. Unless it’s for a business; where the truck makes money for you, it’s not really worth while. I can buy a lot of Gas for 8-12k. Hopefully, it isn’t the fuel system. Best of luck!!

CP4 pumps on these trucks are prone to failure. S&S diesel motor sports makes a couple products, one called a disaster prevention kit which catches all the metal from destroying the whole fuel system WHEN the cp4 fails or shell out $2200 and just get the DCR pump kit they make. I have the DCR kit and it’s just peace of mind knowing the biggest problem with these trucks is solved in mine. The other huge problem is the DEF system and EGR, it can be deleted but it’s “bad” for the environment since deleting it improves fuel economy drastically, totally makes sense.

There are independent labs that do analysis on oil. I would suspect that you can get fuel done as well. If Yall ever want verification of rather or not there is shavings, or impurities in your fuel or oil maybe try sending a sample. Not sure of the cost but I would imagine it’s relatively cheap compared to trusting the word of someone you feel is trying to get over on you. The CP4 is usually an issue for metal in your fuel system, but it would show up after the regular fuel filter because the regular fuel filter would keep it from circulating into the fuel system at the injector pump. Metal trouble usually starts at the pump strainer when this pump begins a catastrophic event and wipes out all of the injectors. If they won't let you talk to a mechanic, report it to a Ford tech rep. There is no other pump that will fit in the engine bay if you have the Scorpion diesel engine. I wouldn't drive it at all until you speak to other Ford mechanics around the area, by phone or other. Good luck from a Ram 3500 Cummins diesel owner--Ford diesel's sound like sewing machines.
@robertlightfoot273 Жыл бұрын
The CP4 on Ford diesel trucks has been a problem in the past. The filter after fuel pump I believe was added to the newer model trucks This was done to contain the metal from getting to the rest of your fuel system. A CP4 pump if needed would cost a quarter of quoted price. I believe that you have already taken care of your problem.
@CGT8011 ай бұрын
A sewing machine sounds better than a noisy Cummins........not sure if that is what you meant. I much prefer my 2020 duramax. The stock cummins is was too slow in traffic and I hate the noise plus am not a dodge ram fan. I also passed on buying a used chevy from the teens because of the CP4 and lower power. The L5P and 10 speed has been a dream and the Chevy rides quite nice, which is a must with my body, but different strokes for different folks.

I heard that was a ford issue injection pump failure sends metal fillings into the engine. Doing lots of damage. My gmc diesel went into that low power mode one time and turns out mice had built a nest inside the air filter and screwed up the computer regen sequence. Easy fix at the dealer.

This is why I bought a 17' f250 with the 6.2 gas engine. Rarely tow a 5k lb travel trailer, otherwise driving empty. The new 7.3 gas looks tempting although I'm hearing of the cam lobes gouging from oil starvation during long idling. Not all of them though, guess it depends on your driving style. Ford should twin turbo the 6.2 which is actually a 6.8 now.

Doesn't matter it's the cp4 high pressure fuel pump failure that send metal shavings throughout the fuel system. Google it and you'll see
@z71btruck11 ай бұрын
This seems to me to be the CP4 pump issue. I converted my Duramax to CP3 before it could happen because of it. So the fuel systems is very high pressure and when it’s not using all the fuel it runs back to the tank if it’s not used in the engine and then that’s how the extremely fine metal particles get spread through the fuel system and yes it ends up needing to get the entire system clean out and the replacing the pump. If you don’t have 10k to blow any day on a repair then you should never drive a diesel.

Oh, Crxx! Guy's I wish I was there to Help. I retired from being a tech // Servive Manager in 2020 after 40 years in auto Biz. Scratching my head on this one guys. It would not cost ANYWERE NEAR 8-12k for a new tank, lines, pumps, etc!! Trying to give the dealer the benifit of the doubt here. My problem with dealers now, is, I have seen them ''run off'' the old pro's and hire guys right out of tech school for much less pay...and these poor guys try to diagnos issues , but many times take the ''Shot gun'' course of action and just replace everything because they really dont know what the real issue is. Also ,at a dealership, the service writers and, well everybody is on commision these days, so the more they can sell you.......! Please Please find a private Diesel shop down there where the REAL pro's now work! The dealers will not pay what a GOOD Diesel Tech is worth,the indy's will and yet dealers charge you much more than what a good independant shop will charge in most cases! Blessings guy's!

The way it works these days is that a mechanic shop especially dealers want to replace a whole system and all of its parts instead of only replacing the one bad part. The good side of this is that is almost always fixes the problem. The bad is that it costs the customer a lot more than might be necessary.

Yes, don’t trust Ford or any dealership. I needed a head light bulb replaced (HID - high intensity diode), Ford was going to charge me $1100 for the light and install. Found out the were going to replace the entire head light Assyrian and housing. This was not needed. I went to Ken Towery and had the install a HID bulb for $130. I bought the bulb at Autozone for $125. So $255 vs $1100. Don’t trust the dealerships! Good thinking.
@rubikmonat6589 Жыл бұрын
Hmmm, so that dealer could fit you in right away, while others had waitlists weeks long. That sounds mighty suspicious, like they have a bad reputation and need to start making money. Policy of not speaking directly to the mechanics is not uncommon in big places though. If theres metal in your filter, the filter works. It doesn't mean the whole system needs to be replaces, unless that metal comes from the high pressure fuel pump (if its a common rail diesel) But if that was the case you would have all kinds of pressure warnings.
@johnhahn846411 ай бұрын
It's the high pressure pump the cp4. It's very common unfortunately. The fuel filters are before the cp4
@oscar33212 Жыл бұрын
There is more than just the fuel filter that could be “clogged”. From the sock on the pickup line (in the tank) to any of the fuel line. You mentioned a fuel test kit that measures pressures, but flow rates are just as important given the going up mountains at highway speeds comment.
@gsolo328 Жыл бұрын
Anyone with a 6.7 MUST at least install a fuel filter AFTER the pump. If the CP4 fails the filter will catch the shavings before destroying your fuel rails, etc. The 2 filters prior to the pump will not catch the shavings if/when the pump fails. Also... you MUST add lubrication to every tank of fuel to lubricate the CP4 pump. Lastly... like others have stated; there is a good aftermarket pump to replace the CP4 pump.
