KZbin is being weird so I'll leave my comment here . Thanks for a fantastic tour ! Been eye balling the 650. You have proved a way better tour then anyone. I don't think its weird you don't have the TV. You need to be plugged in to shore power right ? Any chance on adding solar in the future or just the generator? As long as I could run the AC I'm happy! I'd definitely like to ditch the microwave tho. And seeing you cram in that spot in the bedroom makes me thing it's a missed opportunity for shelf storage !!
@MagellanandGreyhound3 жыл бұрын
@@suedefringe Thank you! We are loving it so far. Yes, you need to be plugged in for real power, but between the DC battery and propane, it’s working out in between driving to campgrounds. And yes, we have a 100 watt solar panel for the DC battery. Totally with you on the shelves! We are going to put some there, plus the cabinets. They are too unwieldy. Space is a premium and while we don’t need much, we do need to be organized

The Lance campers are overall heavier. The new 865 weighs about 500 lbs dry weight more than mine. Also, we have a back step and we still need an additional step we have to bring with us. Only downfall I have to say, is the shower floor lacks support and can crack. Tip for preventative measures, pop the vent cover off from the exterior shower wall, the one below the kitchen sink. Use a can of spray foam with about a 3ft hose attached. Fish the hose through the vent area towards the back of the shower area. Inject the foam for about 10 seconds, slightly pull the hose out, repeat injection for about ten seconds, so forth until the end of the hose is at the front of the shower. We did this to our 650 and it removed a lot of flex from the floor.
@MagellanandGreyhound2 жыл бұрын
That is really good to know. I did notice it seemed to have a bit too much play when stepping on it. Have you had it crack before, or know people who did? That seems like a nightmare if it would crack

First time viewer here. Loved the video guys. We have a 2018 model Lance 650 (doesn't look like much has changed) and we love it. The only complaint I have about it is that we don't get to use it enough, lol. We sleep four people in our camper. My oldest son is 6' 230lbs sleeps on the dinette bed and our youngest son is 40lbs soaking wet sleeps with my wife and I in the queen bed. The only modification I have made is a counter top cover for the two burner cooktop for more counter space. We do all of our cooking outside. Happy adventuring!

Great setup. As a suggestion to prevent heater failure, put a screen over your heater exhaust cause mud wasps will build their nests in the exhaust tube and all the way into the fan housing. I bought a used popup with same heater design and they had built nests in the tube and fan housing. I had to pull the unit out to remove their nests and it had caused the fan to run really slow causing fumes inside.

@MagellanandGreyhound2 жыл бұрын
Hello! That's great that you bought one! We didn't have a video in mind, but we did add/mod a few things, like adding child safety locks to the fridge and medicine cabinet. That has helped ALOT. We've been able to use our swinging bike rack, but it's a pain if we want to remove the truck from the camper, because we need to take the bikes and rack off for that to happen. So we've been using our folding bikes more too. We did add a cargo carrier to the hitch to store containers with our generator and gas when we boondock. It's been pretty busy since we bought it and we unfortunately haven't been able to buy as much extra toys like we hoped. Oh and I definitely plan to switch out the DC battery with a lithium one too

No problem! It's funny you mention the front receiver. That's where we were thinking of sticking our bikes too, so we can leave the back for the cargo carrier and not have such a hassle. There's a few Lance camper Facebook groups I sometimes read about solar/lithium batteries and that seems be the the common thing, to add another panel and replace the battery. I personally find the current DC battery to be ... acceptable, but since we are boondocking a lot more than we thought we would, its weaknesses have become more glaring. Same to you, feel free to reach out if you like via our email on our About page. More camper videos may not be near in our future, but we always like to ask/answer questions and talk with anyone.

Quick question: Are you able to add any insulation to drown out the ambient noise? When you are in the camper as it is parked in front of your house, I hear cars/street noise but of course I imagine you will be using this camper in quieter settings to sleep? Thanks for the wonderfully informative video and safe travels!
@MagellanandGreyhound Жыл бұрын
I’m no expert, so I’m not sure, but I have heard of people adding insulation. They tried to make this model as light as possible but in doing so, it doesn’t drown out sound very well. And yes we live on an insanely busy road in New York. You can hear everything. In campgrounds it is pretty quiet though. The only place we had the same noise issues was a truck stop - we don’t recommend that either to sleep, unless you want broken sleep. 😁

Thanks! Definitely check inventories beforehand. We bought ours in January 2021 I think, but didn't get it until May 2021. Battery life seems okay, but we've heard that getting a lithium etc would be much better. Solar charging is pretty fast, but again, with just an ok battery, it draws fast too. And hahah, thanks, we strive for accuracy. I remember watching so many walkthroughs of campers in dealer lots - no personal effects, no demonstrations - we made it a point to use the thing a bit before we videoed ourselves with it. We might have some different angles of the bathroom in our other video, but I can't remember haha

I'm in the process of buying a 650 Lance. I found a nice 2018 used one in the next state over. I have been looking at several video's to get to know the 650 better as I wait to pick it up later this week. Yours by far is my favorite. You guys are very informative and funny making it a real pleasure to watch and entertaining. We have a Tiffen coach for long and extended trips. I'm buying this one for mainly to use my self to use on short trips recreating around our state, riding and doing water related activities allowing me to go boondocking and fit into smaller more typical campground spots. We have two Yorkie's and a Yellow Lab which the Lab will be my main travel companion. I do have a question, what brand of tie down system do you use? I ordered a Torklift system but it will only work in the front with my 2022 Ford F 150 Tremor which has duel exhaust and factory tow hooks on the back. I'm going to start out using the Happy jack tie down on the sides of the rear bumper but want to use a more substantial mounting point. I noticed your Ram 1500 has duel exhaust so yours might work for me well. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos. Happy trails

Awesome! And thank you so much. We usually don’t make many videos about our setups, but they were very fun to make. 😁 and yeah, with how much the 650 is going for now, we’d get a used too. Good video guys. You showed things very well. It's nice to see a big company like Lance making a camper for the 1/2 ton pickups. I was surprised to see the frigerator in the bed area. I wonder about drips or spills onto the bed, opening the door if there is a thick comforter and whether or not the compressor cycling on and off through the night might keep a person awake. I guess with a smaller camper there were limited choices for placement of the refrigerator. Couldn't believe Lance cheaped out with a stove that you have to manually light . Come on Lance. I've heard that this model does have a walk-on roof. You guys have no ladder in the back for roof acces. Is that something that is an option ?
@MagellanandGreyhound Жыл бұрын
Thanks! We generally try not to put things that can spill in the fridge, but we use these retractable rods to prevent stuff from sliding during transit and so nothing falls when we first open the door. There is no compressor in the fridge - it's a coil system cooled via electric or gas. We hear nothing :) Not sure about the walk-on roof, but newer models of this may have them. We saw that the slightly larger Lance campers had ladders. We never had the option.

Thanks for all the detail! You've sparked a couple of questions for me. How come exhaust fans just pull the air straight up? If exhausted to the side then there could be more room on the roof for solar panels. Also, why not use a lithium ion battery that does not have fumes that need to be exhausted?
@MagellanandGreyhound2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Steven. I'm pretty confused why they didn't just use a lithium ion as well. We're going to be switching out ours with one soon actually. As for the exhaust fans, that's a good question. I know these companies try to squeeze every available inch with something, but having another solar panel with the lithium would be a great upgrade.

I want to see how this truck handles on the road with the Lance 650. What did you add to the suspension from keeping it leveled as best as possible. We are purchasing the Lance 650 to get out on the road.
@MagellanandGreyhound2 жыл бұрын
We heavily upgraded the rear suspension - heavy duty shocks, airlift springs and a sway (stabilizer bar), plus e-rated tires. We can fill/adjust the springs with two valves installed underneath our truck bumper. Other than going over the Mackinac Bridge into the UP on an abnormally windy day, everything has been super smooth and sturdy.

Really a good tour guys! Thank you! I am considering the same camper myself. I am a boondocking type......would there be a place inside to put three Lithium Batteries and a larger inverter/converter? Is there room under the dinette? Or I would even be willing to sacrifice the clothes closet in the bedroom if I would need to.
@MagellanandGreyhound3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Richard! The space is definitely tight in this one. I suspect that if you were going to hook up three lithium’s and a converter that your best bet space wise would be the closet area and area to the left of it. Everything under the dinette is holding something else (propane tank from outside, your factory battery etc).

Great tour of your new camper! I was looking for a quality review of the lance 650 and found it on your channel - thanks 😂 I am buying a preowned 2019 lance 650 private party so I’m doing my homework. It’s going on my 2012 Ram 2500 with 5.7 hemi. Question, I noticed these campers don’t have the cab stops like others. Do you snug the camper all the way forward in the bed of the truck?

Happy to see you guys using a Ram 1500 So many people speak against the Ram but I know with proper modifications it can haul a reasonable sized truck camper. What mods did you do for your truck?
@MagellanandGreyhound3 жыл бұрын
Airlift springs, heavy duty shocks, e-rated tires and a sway bar. I forget most of the names off the top of my head, but it rides nice and sturdy. Even with the camper on it, the rear wheels wells look like they didn’t feel the weight.
@ThomasSchoellerFineArtPhotos2 жыл бұрын
Hope ya don't mind me popping in here on this (payload) subject, which I have quite a bit of experience with... let's dive in. I'm gonna focus on the Ram 1500 5th generation (same as in this video) years 2009 - 2018 which are most common on the road today. Spike, you're right, "so many" people actually do speak against the Ram 1500 due to the coil spring suspension. Let's just say they are NOT experienced high-performance gearheads that engage in off-road competition, or use it for heavy-duty commercial (work). The 1500 Ram has available aftermarket mods that can SAFELY allow owners to carry a slide-in truck camper (within reason) @ 2700# wet weight. I'm definitely not saying to get a Lance camper heavier than the 650 or the 825, but I am saying the 1500 can definitely and safely haul either of them fully loaded, or any comparable weight pop-up campers Most important upgrade - lose the OEM passenger car tires!! The sticker on your front door jamb even tells ya how bad the tires suck. OEM tires are BY FAR, the weakest link. I upgraded to Cooper Discoverer AT3-XLT tires which are 10 ply (extreme overkill) The 8 ply AT3-LT are less expensive and will do the trick. COIL SPRINGS: The second weakest link, and the primary cause for suspension sag in 1500 Rams. Simcoe springs sell a progressive spring upgrade option that increases real-life carrying capacity by 700 lbs. Here's a link... simcoespring.com/products/351-893xhd to them. Progressive springs act as the OEM springs when not under load, giving you the same smooth ride. There are many KZbin videos on how well these springs work, including a test with 2,000 lbs of water dropped in with a forklift. Air Lift Load Lifter Kit: The best by far is the LOADLIFTER 5000. www.airliftcompany.com/products/air-springs/loadlifter-5000/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwvLOTBhCJARIsACVldV2y9ELd7DeOrfPewmQNnpc61yopA8ARTiCDaSVO_Qy9osLEWtjI4oAaAosGEALw_wcB When not hauling a slide-in truck camper, all you need is to inflate them to 5 lbs pressure for everyday use. A portable air compressor can properly inflate the airbags to the pre-measured LEVEL HEIGHT - before you dropped the camper in the bed. Heavy Duty Strut Leveling Kit: don't forget the front end which will be accepting some of the responsibility of carrying the camper safely! Rancho makes probably the best kit for increased carrying capacity, also useful for heavy snowplows, www.shocksurplus.com/products/rancho-quicklift-leveling-strut-front-pair-2006-2008-dodge-ram-1500-4wd?currency=USD&variant=14544334454833&Google%20Shopping&gclid=Cj0KCQjwvLOTBhCJARIsACVldV3ANLjflDdOAF-TbMLKpinHGQwmZgPVmRIKgqvxmJH6YxLEe-taCgoaAmgqEALw_wcB Bilstein Shocks: These are heavy duty use shocks for the rear on your Ram 1500 series trucks. Bilstein makes 3 models for specific commercial needs. Plowing, Sand & salt spreaders, Trailer pulling, and PAYLOAD carrying capacity.

Is your truck bed a 6'4" bed? If so, did you have to sit the camper back from the front of the bed due to the underside of the rear part of the camper being exposed? Thank you
@MagellanandGreyhound Жыл бұрын
I think it's 6'6" - it's definitely not the 8" long bed. I'm not sure I exactly understand your question, but let me at least say this - the camper fits almost exactly from the front of the bed (by the cab) to the back of it with the tailgate removed. We have another video where we you can kind of see how the camper sits in the truck - kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZDIkKKlYtpqeqM - hopefully that could help.
