England has a wide variety of accents. This series is set in Birmingham, in the West Midlands of England, in the centre of the country about 120 miles north west of London. The Shelby family are locals, and talk with a 'Brummie' accent (none of the actors are actually from Birmingham but they make a decent attempt at the accent, which is very hard to mimic without sounding like a parody). Birmingham was a boom city on the Victorian age and had massive industrial growth, which attracted people to the city, hence there being lots of people on the show with some Irish connections, the Jamaican preacher (RIP Benjamin Zephaniah, an actual Brummie poet who in the show sometimes plays up his Jamaican heritage in his accent a little) etc etc. Campbell is from Northern Ireland and has a strong Belfast accent, Grace is from the Republic of Ireland but her character is aligned with Britain. The show is set in the period right after Ireland became independent, except Northern Ireland which stayed with Britain, which lead to a great deal of upheaval and harm in both countries. Birmingham, for instance, in the 70s was hit by a series of pub bombs by the IRA one night that killed 21 people and injured 200, and incidents in Northern Ireland like Bloody Sunday where the British Army shot a dozen protestors. The show has the beginnings of that conflict in the background.

3:38 they do sound “British”, they absolutely do. They’re from Birmingham and as such have a “brummie” accent. Midlands don’t sound like southerners, just like northerners sound completely different also, same with Scottish and Welsh. There are loads of accents in Britain, just like every other country. We don’t all have a posh kings English accent haha

Guys there are different accents in england. There are different accents only 10 mins drive from each other. The accents in the peaky blinders gsng are Birmingham accents which is a city in England. Accents are very different to each other but are still.english accents.

Americans hearing a Birmingham accent for the first time must be like a Brit hearing a Deep southern alabama accent for the first time. There's different strains of American southern accents just like there's various northern and southern accents in England. The Irish coppers have come INTO Birmingham, that sort of lowered lilting tone and register, pay attention around Tommy and the fam, youll pick it up as the show progresses.

It's getting to be a little bit distracting that you still think British/Britain only equals England. And that you think Birmingham accent isn't a British accent just because they don't speak the Queen's English. Please look up a map of Great Britain/United Kingdom. It consists of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Everyone from one of those places is British and they speak a myriad of accents.

Ok, to explain the accent thing. Because this does seem like a very strange concept for a lot of Americans (No offense, Its just I dont live in the UK anymore and any time I meet an America they think I'm not British because I don't speak with the 1 accent they have in mind) Does a New York accent and a California accent sound the same to you? What about Texas and Ohio? Every country in the world has more than 1 accent. Accents change from city, region, etc anywhere in the world. UK has a lot of different accents even though its pretty small.

I think when you're thinking "British accent" you're thinking southern England, "posh," London type accents. There's a whole mess of different sounding accents as you work north.

The show is based in Birmingham, a large Industrial city in Middle West of England. The Shelby and Lee families are of English Gypsy (Roma) Heritage. Inspector Cambell and Grace from Northern Ireland. There is also Irish population in Birmingham and across Northern England, especially at this time as many moved across to work in the mines and factories due to economic hardship in Ierland, which was at the time Just about oi gain partial independance from the UK following years of resistance to the occupatiin and colonization of Ireland and political unrest relating to the peace talks. The IRA (Irish republican army) were a para-military Catholic Irish terrorist group fighting for a free united Irish Republic, who Insoector Campbell had been previously responsable for 'driving out' of Belfast City in Northern Ireland.

The Peaky Blinders are English they have a Birmingham accent, there’s many different accents just within England e.g Winston Churchill, he’s got a more posh London accent and then Grace and Inspector Campbell are both Irish but two different Irish accents. The Shelby’s are of Irish decent though so think that’s why people are saying you’re not far off 😊

Regarding cigarettes, companies would g8ve miners and steel workers cheap cigarettes, to "help" them cough up all of the dust and junk. Thus the spitoons - like the one Grace threw out infont of Tommy. The ones she ckeaned to get the job.
