I’ve always interpreted this song as being sung from the perspective of the darkness in this world (maybe even Satan) warning literal mothers to train their children to avoid the darkness. This song is actually in response to Tipper Gore and Al Gore during the PMRC hearings where Tipper was heading a group pushing to censor all music they find offensive. Al Gore was on the committee that heard from many musicians. Frank Zappa, John Denver and Dee Snyder all spoke against censorship.

little fun fact. This is not the original video. The original video was banned from MTV back in the early 90's because in the video their were parts were Glen Danzig would rip a chicken in half over some girls stomach and he would write the cross with the chickens blood on the woman's stomach.
