I'm 71 and got my first guitar @12 years old. For me it's ALL been the 'Golden age of music gear'. My first bit of 'high tech' was an old 4" mono reel to reel tape recorder. I'd leave the mic in front of the speaker of an old valve bedside radio and tape songs off the 'Hit Parade' then try to learn them. Worked in the 'Record Industry' in the early70's. Both wholesale and retail. Studied music full time as a 'mature age student' 2001-3 which set me up nicely for the birth of KZbin. It was when studying that I got into computers and using them for music. Jumped on 'Launchpad' followed by 'Push'(1) when they first came out. Moved to Maschine (+ Jam) and most recently MPC (Live2) and Akai Force. Looking forward to MPC3. Biggest point is as I'm now an age pensioner I don't need to make money from Anything and can just sit back and Enjoy making music. Maybe go busking at the local Farmer's Market now and then as a 21st century one man band. Even there I'm not concerned about making money. Just spreading a little joy and honing my skills. Love your channel having found it after buying Force. Strangest thing is, after investing in 'stand alone' I went out and bought an M1 MacBook Air and upgraded Live9-12. Go figure. I think even there (computers) we are in a golden age. My only gripe is the lack of backwards compatibility with Firewire. Need to preserve my 12 year old MBP to enable my 32 channel digital (firewire) mixer.

I agree with you on this. I have the Live ll, SP404mkll and Maschine + (and a room full of synths and basses). I’m a gen x musician and these devices are amazing. If you would’ve told me that I could make complete music on one portable device I’d call you crazy. I myself have already sold off a bunch of synths that was basically living in my closet. But this can be a major problem if you have GAS.
@DylanParisMusic6 ай бұрын
Oh man totally agree! I’m almost grateful for my lack of space for too many synths cause I could totally see them taking over if I had room

Totally true points. But personally I really dont like learning new gear. Well to clarify, I don't like learning new sequencers. On the topic of making music on a steam Deck... I'm using a Lenovo Legion Go! With Ableton 12 and push 3 it works amazingly. I had to remove the controllers and set it up vertically because I needed the extra USB C port. On a funny side note I was trying to sell my MPC One + but the market is saturated, so right when I gave up they dropped 3.0 software which almost solves every problem I had with the device! Its moving to my never sell list now. I don't know how ill use it as i'm happy and comfy with my Live workflow but I think as a side device it could be fun, and auto sampling might come in handy.

Was going to get the push 3 standalone but MPC 3 just showcased. I’ll probably stick with the live 2. 😂😂

Have to agree I have an MPC one a Microfreak and several inexpensive but great guitars which collectively cost a lot less than my guitar and amp in my teenage years and can produce music at such a high level compared to my teens. I do keep myself to a smaller pool of gear and I sell on stuff as I upgrade. I started with Volcas, then got an MC101 and some little Behringers then the MPC one but I’ve sold each set as I upgraded and each generation has pretty much funded the next. I do use a DAW but I really enjoy the music making process. But yes barriers to entry for recording are so low dnd it is hard to get noticed.

I totally relate to the small gear start and then upgrading over time! MPC one and microfreak is a great combo too

yeah, all dawless gear is so amazing to have, really lets you dive into the music. It's always hard to pick just one way of doing it nowadays

A car without a driver is just that. A driver without a car can still get somewhere. I listened to you yammer on and on about cars. That car was designed to get someone from one place to another. To feel something, and record that emotion, if people find resonance in the communication of that emotion they will like the song. I get it, gear creates clicks, but that's kinda part of the issue right now. Soulless information about this car and that car, I mean the trunkspace, wow...I get it. People wonder why music sucks. People wonder if AI will destroy the destroy the music industry. Since anyone can buy a car, there is nothing holding back anyone, it's too bad no one knows how to drive. If you see a 16 yr old punk in a ferrari roll by, you think 'what a putz' and in the back of your mind you feel sorry for the car when the kid wrecks it. There are far too many consumer fanboys buying cars and saying things like 'This is the road avicci drove down...take that next left, let's drive down the same fucking road vangelis did for bladerunner...' Jesusfuck... 3 pieces of paper, a kid, a ball point pen, a crayon and a pencil. Tell the kid to draw on each. From those 3 pictures, you will get honesty, creativity and insight into the 'voice' of person in side the kid. Very few of you do that. You copy. You emulate. and wonder why it doesn't sound good/original. So you just talk about the cars...it's all you have...

I made a decision recently to go all in on Maschine MK3 and I play keys. I Grabbed Komplete 14 this summer and the Reason Rack is ace. I have a ton of other virtual stuff and it’s a productive setup!

And you haven’t even scratched the surface on the hardware renaissance. Roland Fantom EX, Yamaha Montage M8X, Kurzweil K2700, Korg Nautilus, and small and large synths galore. Behringer bringing cheap to music. It’s easy to get into music performance and production these days. It’s hard to make any money on it though.

Hm. There is a difference between being a musician and and a device operator. I am dealing with that struggle. Playing electric guitar for decades pretty much every day and also loving electronic music. Electronic music is mostly pattern based creations of sequenced sounds. Although it's possible to create music, that has originated on a real instrument, on music production device, it's a hassle and kills the vibe. As much as a DAW on a computer does. For me it's a matter if committing to an environment. I can create piece after piece on a OP-Z or compose a piece on the guitar. There is practically no way to achieve both on one environment. If I would recreate a guitar piece on a teenage engineering device, Novation circuit or Electron Digitakt I will exceed the capacity. It is either this or that. Using a standalone music production device always left me with wanting more as a musician.

nah fam. those are just computers running custom OS packaged with midi controllers. i guess it always has been but at least in the past the gear had a “sound”. you’d be better off getting a laptop and a midi controller for the ultimate portable music making experience. i understand the elektron boxes for their capabilities with sequencing buttt even this can be matched in ableton. TLDR; just use what u have. unless you’re actually looking for a particular sound, you’re better off using a laptop
