We're limewashing our brick home and our trees! We're almost done with the front of our house and we couldn't be happier with it.
Next up is the landscape lighting and the sides of our house. Follow us on this journey to see if the end results live up to the hype!
For those who are unfamiliar with the practice of limewashing trees: Limewash /whitewash is an old and very good agricultural practice to protect the trees from sun burn and sun scalding, certain insects and wood boring pests. Any fruit-bearing or ornamental tree will benefit greatly from limewash. It might look a bit weird for those who are not used to it, but it gives the trees a healthier leg up and it’s a very common practice in islands, Mediterranean and Aegean coastal regions, Eastern European countries, and central Asian countries because of its benefits 🙌
If you want to give it a try make sure you use only limewash or interior latex paint in a 1:1 ratio with water. Never use oil based paints (including spray paint) and exterior latex paints as they can hurt the trees.

We do it every year at our home with a broom brush before the Eid festival. We buy the raw lime, put it in water which produces a lot of heat. After it becomes cold, we add a little indigo and mix it. After that, we apply it on walls with a broom brush.

Being a plasterer for near 40yrs I've a pet hate for painted/limewashed brickwork, devalues a property here in the UK, If you must cover your brickwork cover it with a render type coating or cladding then paint it. As long as you like it and not selling your a winner

This is brick cladding, and I'm guessing it's not as valuable as old English structural brick. I highly doubt it devalues property here -in fact several realtors have commented the opposite.

I found out after the fact why 2 of our 3 Raywood Ash trees were failing. I only looked at freeze level not heat. We get up to 110 in summer Southern California high desert and for several months! Except strangely this last winter and summer. Very humid and 100 years of rain in one winter. Got the opposite effect on our desert willow. It had mildew issues. So I guess its traditional to paint trunks of Raywood ash too as especially young they dont like direct sun. I realized the one doing well and 3 times the size of the 2nd, the first died completely....it goes into shade from our separate workshop building. The sprinkler guard around it also leaked past it. So I dug a bigger trench aroudn the 2nd one and put a white fabric skirt around it for now. I may paint it. Will see. But its doing better. I came looking for the cabinet sliding drawers. Will check out more of your videos.

I just limewashed my American house, it made it look like the limewashed cottages back in Ukraine. I'm planning on giving some bright colored trims and door to contrast, it also gives a back home feel I think. Stunning transformation! I loved your commentary and the tidbits of insight you threw in throughout-like the rain chains! I’ve never seen or heard of those before, but am intrigued by not only the visual benefits but their ability to put rainwater to good use watering nearby plants. I’m sure you’ve already thought about it but I thought another commenter made a good suggestion of making the windowpanes & frames black to add some more contrast. I love the natural stone portico, which already provides some beautiful contrast while highlighting the focal point of the entry way. Great work! Looking forward to seeing more!
