You guys should try the Upper West Side - Riverside Drive and West End Avenue are so quiet and beautiful. The apartments are pre-war, though, so I don't know if that's your style. You can try Columbus Avenue on the Upper West Side for more modern, loft-type apartments. I lived all over the Upper West Side when I lived in Manhattan for 15 years, and I never had a problem with noise.

My grandparents live in the upper west side near riverside park and cobble hill in brooklyn, which is where I have been living the past five years. I absolutely love it. Super quiet, blocks away from everything you need and by every single train you need to get around the city! UWS near riverside is also amazing, quiet. I stay there from time to time and I’ve always loved how much calmer it is compared to midtown and other areas in the city. As someone who goes to Times Square/garment district a lot, it’s a nice feeling to come home to a calmer area.

If you'd like to be vaguely nearby, I have found heading further west (past Greenwich in the Village, past 8th Ave in Chelsea, Past Broadway on the UWS) to be equal parts nearby to everything happening but also a bit more residential and peaceful. For a more quiet neighborhood the upper west side is a great area, it’s very family centric and I like to think of it as the suburbs of the city because of how residential it is but it’s still very much so living in the city. I lived on the UWS my whole life until I was 13 when I moved to Hell’s Kitchen and have been here for 4 years now. Hi Lucie! You might like Ditmas Park in BK :) I've lived here for 2 years with my husband and it's such a cute, quiet neighborhood near Prospect Park. My apartment is a 7 min walk to the Q train which goes right into the city. I'm at Atlantic Ave/Barclays in ~20 mins and Union Sq in ~30. The neighborhood is very residential full of beautiful tree-lined blocks of genuine Victorian mansions! I'm amazed more people don't know about the neighborhood (even people that lives in NYC!) I'm always having to explain where I live when people ask. We're actually planning to move to a more central location at the end of our lease this month for opposite reasons you have (we are both going back to work full time soon) but it sounds perfect for you!

I feel the best way to gauge noise when touring an NYC apartment is to visit the apartment at different times of the day as often as you can before you sign. This, of course, is not always possible because of the need to often jump on an awesome apartment, but try! My first apartment block in Harlem was so quiet, even on the garden level❗️Then I moved literally one block up, and it was party time nonstop 😒 In general, I feel like the further west you go, toward the Hudson, your apartment would get quieter. I would not say the same for further East because of the increased congestion, but I could be wrong! Always check for school zones (lots of noise) and churches (more noise) and flow of traffic east to west (odd streets) west to east (even streets) west of fifth and vice versa. Happy searching 😇

Thanks for sharing! First make sure your husband isn’t reading this because I’m about to give you a 30th birthday suggestion for him...tell him to save the date/time so you can take him to dinner or brunch for his birthday. This way he will be dressed up. Then secretly plan a party for him with a bunch of friends & family at a restaurant. He will be so surprised and excited but...little does he know that’s not the real surprise. You will already have packed suitcases for the both of you because when the party ends ...you surprise him with a trip somewhere (even if it’s just for the weekend). Designate someone to bring your suitcases to the party location so you can immediately leave when it’s time. He will be shocked that he is immediately on his way to the airport with you after partying. A milestone birthday deserves 2 surprises hehe. Good luck if you decide to do this for him😀🎂🛫
