Steppenwolf was a Canadian-American rock band from 1968 to 1972. Their biggest hits were "Born To Be Wild", "Magic Carpet Ride" & "Rock Me" but other songs are "Straight Shootin’ Woman", "Hey Lawdy Mama", "Who Needs Ya", "Move Over", "Monster" etc. Both of their songs "Born To Be Wild" & "The Pusher" were used prominently in the 1969 cult film "Easy Rider".

This was my song.I was 14 and ready for a change in my music. This one did it."Magic Carpet Ride." by what Ed Sullivan called the long haired rock and rollers Steppenwolf.John Kay was the coolest cat with those sunglasses. Didn't know at the time he was visually impaired. To me he was just Cool. A little "Crystal Blue Persuasion" and "Magic Carpet Ride" was a musical high.Still to this day.

This is Psychedelic Rock from back in the day when we were all Turning on - Tuning in and Dropping out. LSD was BIG and was everywhere. Personally, I was too afraid to try it because when I got buzzed, I liked the Earth to remain the Earth and didn't want to see what my friends told me that they were seeing. I figured that there was too much lumber in my head that could turn on me and cause a "bad trip". However, the music was great! Try listening to The Chambers Brothers "Time Has Come Today" or The Strawberry Alarm Clock "Incense and Peppermints".

Right??? I didn't have the nerve to do acid either cuz I know I couldn't have handled it. It sounded pretty cool from my brother though when he'd talk about having conversations with little people - like 3" high lol Funny how drugs were so much a part of excellent music

Truly one of the great bands of all time. Everybody fives lack Sabbath the 1st heavy metal band but personally I think Steppenwolf was the 1st heavy Metal band. Their sound was much harder and heavier than the rest in those days. One of my fav. bands. The singer always wore those sunglasses because he had issues with his eyes. One of the most unique and recognizable voices around.

The song is about the feeling you got when you heard this song! John Kaye, the lead singer, wrote it about listening to music with amplifiers, and spacing out on the feeling. "On a cloud of sound I drifted tonight" is one of the lyrics.

Steppenwolf took their name from a 1927 novel by Hermann Hesse in which a middle aged man stuck in an existential crisis goes on several mind bending adventures with two young women he met by happenstance who attempt to help him get his groove back so to speak. When you're ready for more late sixties psychedelic rock of this sort, check out some of these classics -- Iron Butterfly "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", The Chambers Brothers "Time Has Come Today", Harry Nilsson "Jump into the Fire", Blue Cheer "Peace Of Mind", Strawberry Alarm Clock "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow", Fever Tree "San Francisco Girls", Jefferson Airplane "Won't You Try/Saturday Afternoon", Fairport Convention "Who Knows Where The Time Goes?", Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac "The Green Manalishi", The Turtles "You Showed Me", Donovan "Wear Your Love Like Heaven", Susan Christie "Paint A Lady", and Spirit "I Got A Line On You" along with many others.

In the early 90's a bunch of us guys from the AFB hit a club in Destin, FL named Night Town looking for the ladies as usual and I was floored when Steppenwolf came on stage and opened with this this. We had no idea they would even be there.. It was usually newer up and coming groups.Sounded as good as 1967.

For me, it is so enjoyable to see you discovering music like this. The best music ever written comes from this era. The 60's and 70's produced artists that were so creative and so much of the music is really sophisticated. There is nothing like this today. The radio literally exploded with an insane amount of quality, original and completely stunning music with so many genres. You guys are young and I am old...so trust me on this. Just go for it. I suggest you listen to The Doors, The Young Rascals, Cream, Traffic, David Bowie, The Kinks, The Guess Who, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Smokey Robinson, Simon and Garfunkel, Jefferson Airplane. I think John Kay has a voice similar to blues legend Howlin' Wolf. And that's definitely a good thing. What's remarkable is that he was a German refugee kid. His dad was in the German army in WW2 and was killed fighting the Russians in the latter years of the war. As the Russians battled towards Berlin, his mom escaped with young John towards the west and eventually they ended up in Toronto Canada, where they had some relatives. John Kay had eyesight problems growing up and attended a school for the blind. That's one reason you often see him wearing shades btw. As he got a bit older, he picked up some music skills, and kicked around doing solo gigs in the Toronto-Yorkville coffee house scene in the mid sixties. I guess he made something of a name for himself and was asked to join a local Toronto band called The Sparrow, who were in need of a vocalist. After playing local clubs for a while, they eventually made their way to California and changed their name to Steppenwolf, undergoing some band member changes in the process. One of the guys who left the band called himself Mars Bonfire. He wrote the anthemic Steppenwolf hit, Born To Be Wild. I've heard his original demo of the song. The Steppenwolf version is definitely better. Lol
