This is no where near enough spend on National defence. Just look at our history pre second world war. Absolutely awful! Appeasement is never the answer. Shame we did not take the lessons to be learnt from our hoping to bribe the vikings etc not to be so nasty go us! Obviously this policy was doomed to failure, and it failed. If we are serious about the first responsibility of government, which is defence of the realm, then we need to step up to the mark and budget for more than this petty sum. Much talk but little delivery and even that is tomorrow! This is very disappointing!

NATO doesn’t have a minimum 2% is just recommended. The U.K. is one of only a few that are over 2%. This budget increase is a 25% increase in spending it’s massive

In the 1980s UK spending on Defence as a proportion of GDP was over 5.5%. We had 1,200 tanks. Now we have around 200. We are a Maritime Nation and yet our Navy is now a third the size it was in the 1980s. 2.5% by 2030 is pitiful.

@@user-zg1wr8bu1y Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg: "The 2% guideline is not a ceiling, it's a minimum, it's a floor." I never said it was a requirement, I said it was a goal. What I reacted to was calling the hike in spending as going into "war footing" which is quite ridiculous. Especially considering that some NATO countries now spend over 3% of GDP, and others has that kind of spending as their new goal. It's laudable, for sure, but no need for hyperbole. We are living in perilous times, and everyone in Europe should wake up to this fact.

75 billion sounds like a lot but it's a drop in the ocean in comparison to the real amount needed to fetch our army up to scratch. Our military is tiny because of government cuts to spending year after year for decades, we're seen as a joke by Russia, China even Iran and north Korea don't take us seriously. We've been complacent and caught napping and increasingly spending by less than 1% GDP by 2030 is laughable.
